The Magnetic Filtering Vacuum Arc Film Deposition System and Its Applications

  • A cathodic arc with beam filter is employed for the deposition of metallic and hydrogen-free amorphous carbon films. A solenoid filter is used to prevent macropaticles and nonionized atoms from reaching the substrate. The detail transport characters of the filter are presented in the paper. With an optmum filter arrangement we are able to obtain a filter output of 18.4% of the total number of ions produced by the vacuum arc discharge. The deposited amorphous cabon thin film contains no hydrogen and a high fraction of $sp^3$ is determined by XPS. A dense Ti film deposited on H13 steel improves the corrosion resistance of the H13 steel and significant improvements of corrosion resistance were observed by implanting Ti, C in the film.

  • We investigated the properties of a hybrid type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL), which consists of a transformer with multiple secondary windings and resistive $YBa_2Cu_3O_7$ (YBCO) thin film stripes. The secondary windings of the transformer were coupled with each other, and a superconducting current limiting unit of YBCO stripes was connected to each of them as a switch. Simple connection in series of SFCL units tends to produce imbalance in power among the units due to slight differences in quench current. In current design, magnetic coupling between the SFCL units provides a solution to power dissipation imbalance, inducing simultaneous quench by current redistribution in the YBCO films.

  • Conductivity and transmittancy of ZnO is very excellent and the price is low. So the study of transparent electrode materials and electromagnetic wave shielding wall is actively in progress. We add $Al_2O_3$(0.0, 2.0, 3.0, 5.0wt%) to ZnO and observe microscopic structure and conductivity. For XRD observation, Al peak of AZO is increased by increasing the amount of $Al_2O_3$. We observe that the size of grain is reduced by increasing the liquid phase of grain boundary to SEM observation. Conductivity of AZO is increased by increasing the amount of $Al_2O_3$. We confirm the application possibility of the materials for electromagnetic wave reflection materials.

  • To investigate the influence of strip width and inter-strip separation on the ac loss, arrays of parallel strips with different widths and separations were prepared. Studies on the hysteresis-loss characteristics of multifilamentary YBCO films were performed. The local magnetic field due to magnetization currents is measured by a scanning Hall probe microscope. Based on these results a conceptual design for a low loss YBCO coated conductor is suggested.

  • A system of anodic process of aluminum thin film has implemented for nanofabrication. The manufactured equipment consists of three main parts: chiller, reaction bath and power supply. The chiller module consists of refrigeration compressor, copper tube and coolant with a thermostat. The reaction bath has kept in same temperature as a thermodynamic canonical ensemble system during the anodic reaction process. The magnetic bar has stirred oxalic acid in bath for uniform reaction. The DC power supply has applied into two electrodes, aluminum for anode and platinum for cathode in the oxalic acid. The anodization process results in the formation of nanoporous thin films.

  • We have analyzed a set of high resolution photographic line profiles of a Zeeman sensitive Fe I $\lambda$ 6302.5 line taken with the Universal Birefringent Filter over a single round sunspot (SPO 5007) at the Sacramento Peak Solar Observatory. The observed spectra recorded on films are traced by PDS and the traced densities are converted to relative intensity by means of IRAF. The Stokes I and V profiles are then constructed by adding together and subtracting from each other the left and right handed circular polarizations, respectively. The reduced I and V profiles are analyzed by means of the coarse analysis(Auer et al.(1977), Skumanich and Lites(1987)) with the use of inversion technique. It is found that the umbral field strength is about 3000 gauss and the field distribution follows closely the emperical model proposed by Wittmann(1974).

  • Thin film inductors of 10 mm ${\times}$ 10 mm with spiral pattern of 14 turns were fabricated by sputtering, photo-masking, and etching processes. Their impedence characteristics and annealing after effects were investigated. After magnetic annealing, the impedence characteristics of the inductors were improved at comparatively low frequencies, but the tendencies of it for thr frequency changes were almost same. These improvement was caused by the annihilation of the internal stresses of films, Uniaxial field annealed thin film inductor had an inductance of 1000 nH, resistance of 6 $\Omega$, and quality factor of 1 at 2 MHz.

  • The thermal characteristics of TMR devices by using Fast Linear Annealing method has been studied. A computer program that employs the finite differential method has been developed to simulate the temperature distribution of a diameter of 4" silicon wafer, which is subjected to radiation heat from the halogen lamp. We adopted the temperature of 350$\^{C}$, which is the highest temperature usually used in annealing for magnetic thin films. We changed moving velocity of the lamp from 0.05 mm/sec to 1 mm/sec. The moving velocity of halogen lamp has less effect on the local peak temperature of the sample only about 40$\^{C}$. Therefore, we may be able to anneal TMR devices in such short time of 1 minute and 40 seconds per one wafer, using the Fast Linear Annealing method.
