  • Kinetic studies were made on the thermal decomposition of hydrated magnesium aluminum double sulfate by a nonisothermal TG method. Thermal analyses of the dehydration of tricosahydrate showed that the reaction proceeded via decahydrate to the anhydrous MgAl2(SO4)4 in the range 50$^{\circ}$to 400$^{\circ}C$. Decomposition of MgAl2(SO4)4 occurred as the two-step between 650$^{\circ}$ and 970$^{\circ}C$. Dehydration of MgAl2(SO4)4$.$23H2O and a 2D diffusion controlled with an activation energy of 16.6kcal/mole, respectively. MgAl2(SO4)4 fitted the contracting volume model with an activation energy of 10.5kcal/mole, and MgSO4 fitted a contracting area model with an activation of 4.5kcal/mole.

  • Candide tropicalis was selected for its ability to utilize spent waste generated by the alcohol distillery using tapioca starch as a raw material. Optimum pH and temperature on batch culture of the organism were 4.0 and 3$0^{\circ}C$. The growth of the organism was markedly increased when 0.2% of ammonium sulfate, 0.002% of potassium phosphate dibasic, add 0.04% of magnesium sulfate were supplemented to the filtrate. At these conditions, maximum specific growth rate and saturation constant were 1.0 hr$^{-1}$ and 4.4 g.1$^{-1}$ , respectively. At a dilution rate of 0.5hr$^{-1}$ , a productivity of 1.84 g.1$^{-1}$ . hr$^{-1}$ was obtained and about 70% of carbohydrate was assimilated. Protein content of dried cell was about 60%.

  • As this study is to estimate resistance of cement mortars using crushed sand under chemical attacks. Besides tests have been carried out with cement mortars by river sand and crushed sand by fine sand, cement mortars mix various proportions of silica fume and fly ash(up to 15% and 50% by weight for cement) were prepared and immersed in pure water, sodium sulfate solution, magnesium sulfate solution, seawater for 28days, 60days, 90days and 180days. Test on the change in the weight and compressive strength of cement mortars according to the duration of immersion time and the content of silica fume and fly ash was performed.

  • Lactobacillus cristatus KLB 46 isolated from Korean woman was grown on supplemented whey medium and medium compositions were optimized for maximum viable cell count. Among the nitrogen sources tested, beef extract yielded the highest viable cell number. When corn steep liquor was applied as an additional nitrogen source, the viable cell number was highest $(3.11{\times}10^9\;CFU/ml)$ in the medium containing 50g/ l corn steep liquor and 10g/ l beef extract. The highest viable cell $count(5.00{\times}10^9\;CFU/ml)$ was obtained from the supplemented whey medium that contains beef extract(10g/ l ), corn steep liquor(50g/ l ), tween 80(0.1%, v/v) and trace amounts of sodium acetate(5g/ l ), dipotassium phosphate(2g/ l ), magnesium sulfate(0.1g/ l ), and manganese sulfate (0.05g/ l ).

  • The colorants were extracted from black soybean using a buffer solution. Dyeing properties and the fastness of silk fabric dyed with black soybean extracts were investigated. K/S values of dyed fabric were increased with concentration of black soybean extracts. Magnesium sulfate, nickel sulfate and calcium chloride as mordants are used to obtain reddish purple color. Optimum dyeing temperature of black soybean extracts was $30^{\circ}C$. Fastness were generally good except for light fastness which was extremely poor.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the physiological charateristics of Hericium erinaceus in sawdust media. The optimum temperature was $25^{\circ}C$ and the optimum pH was 5. Mycelial growth and density of H. erinaceus was quite good when oak tree sawdust were used as cultural substrates. The best mycelial growth in H. erinaceus were observed when wheat pollard was added as supplement on sawdust substrates. The optimum supplement ratios of wheat pollard and magnecium sulfate were 20% and 0.1% respectively, for H. erinaceus.

  • Hydrotalcite was prepared by reacting with sodium carbonate, magnesium oxide and aluminum sulfate solutions in this study. The optimum synthesis conditions based on the yield of the product were established by applying Box-Wilson experimental design. It was found that the optimum synthesis conditions of hydrotalcite were as follows; reacting temperature : 48~63$^{\circ}C$, concentration of reactant solution : about 20%, molar concentration ratio of two reactants [MgO]/[Al. sulfate] ; 7.35~8.1, temperature of washing water : 34.4~37.4$^{\circ}C$, drying temperature : 74~81.5$^{\circ}C$. The physicochemical properties of hydrotalcite as medicine were studied by use of chemical analysis, D.S.C. thermogram, bulk volume test and acid consuming capacity measurements.

  • This paper presents the results of experimental work on both mechanical properties and durability of concrete or mortar incorporating silica fume. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of replacement of silica fume on the performance of hardened concrete or mortar. The replacement levels of silica fume that replaced cement in this work were 0%, 5%, 10% and 15%, respectively. The results of this study indicate that both mechanical properties and durability of concrete are greatly dependent on the replacement levels of silica fume. As the replacement level of silica fume increased, the mechanical properties including compressive and flexural strengths, and static modulus of elasticity were proportionally enhanced. Furthermore, it was found that silica fume had some beneficial effects on the resistances to both chloride ions penetration and sodium sulfate attack. However, it exhibited poor resistances to both freezing-thawing action and magnesium sulfate attack.
