Effect of Maengjong-Juk (Phyllostachys Pubescens) Extract Coated Rice Diet on Antioxidative System of C57BL/6 Mice Fed Atherogenic Diet (맹종죽(Phyllostachys Pubescens)추출물 코팅쌀이 Atherogenic 식이를 섭취한 C57BL/6 마우스의 항산화 시스템에 미치는 영향)

  • To evaluate the antioxidative effect of maengjong-juk (Phyllostachys pubescens) extract coated rice in vivo system, maengjong-juk extract coated rice diets were fed to C57BL/6 mice for 16 weeks. Plasma total antioxidative capacity, hepatic lipid peroxidation, protein oxidation, activities of antioxidative enzymes and total glutathione content were measured. Plasma total antioxidative capacity was elevated significantly in maengjong-juk extract diets supplemented group in a dose dependant manner. Hepatic TBARS contents were significantly decreased in maengjong-juk extract diets supplemented group compared to high cholesterol group. Maengjong-juk extract coated rice diets suppressed the protein oxidation significantly in liver. Activities of hepatic antioxidative enzymes such as total SOD, CuㆍZn-SOD, Mn-SOD, GSH-Px and catalase activities of maengjong-juk extract coated rice diets were significantly higher than those of high cholesterol diet. Total hepatic glutathione content was significantly increased by maengjong-juk extract coated rice diets administration. According to this study, numerous antioxidative materials and phytochemicals containing in maengjong-juk extracts appear to protect antioxidative systems in C57BL/6 mice fed bamboo extract coated rice diet. Effect of Maengjong-Juk Extract Coated Rice Supplementation on Antioxidative System in Rabbit Fed High Cholesterol Diet (맹종죽 추출물 코팅쌀 식이가 고콜레스테롤 섭취 토끼의 항산화 시스템에 미치는 영향)

  • To evaluate the antioxidative effect of rice coated with maengjong-juk extract in vivo system, rice coated with maengjong-juk extract diets were fed to NZW rabbit for 16 weeks and lipid peroxidation, protein oxidation, activities of antioxidative enzymes and total glutathione content in tissues were measured. TBARS contents in liver and spleen were significantly decreased in maengjong-juk extract diet group compared to control group, while those in kidney and heart tissue were not significantly different. Maengjong-juk extract diet suppressed the protein oxidation significantly in liver, spleen, kidney and heart tissues. Hepatic total SOD, Cu$.$Zn-SOD and Mn-SOD activities of maengjong-juk extract diets were significantly higher than those of control diet. GSH-Px and catalase activities of maengjong-juk extract diet were higher than those of control, while GR activities show no significant difference between the two groups. Total hepatic glutathione content was significantly increased by maengjong-juk extract diet. According to this study, many antioxidative materials and phytochemicals in maengjong-juk extracts seems to protect tissues from oxidative stress by stimulating antioxidative systems in atherosclerotic rabbit fed high cholesterol diet.

Composition Analysis and Antioxidative Activity of Maengjong-juk (Phyllostachys pubescence) Leaves Tea (맹종죽잎차의 성분 분석 및 항산화 활성)

  • A Maengjong-juk (Phyllostachys pubescence) leaves tea was prepared by using a series of drying/roasting and rolling processes. The produced tea contained abundant dietary fibers (60.42%), $\beta$-carotenes (7.9 mg RE%), and calcium (437.1 mg%). Also the polyphenol content ($155.33\;{\mu}g/g$-tea) and DPPH free radical scavenging activity ($IC_{50}=212\;{\mu}g/mL$) of Maengjong-juk leaves tea were greatly higher than those of simply dried leaves. These results imply that the tea preparation is effective to utilize the useful components of Maengjong-juk leaves.

Antimutagenic Effects of Korean Bamboo Trees and Inhibitory Effect of Hepatic Toxicity of Bamboo Extracts Coated Rice (한국산 대나무의 항돌연변이 효과 및 대나무 코팅쌀의 간 독성 억제효과)

  • To evaluate the antimutagenic effect and hepato protective of bamboo trees and bamboo byproduct, hot-water extracts from four kinds of bamboo [wang-dae (Phyllostachys bambusoides S. et Z.), som-dae (Phyllostachys nigra var. henonis), maengjong-juk (Phyllostachys pubescens) and o-juk (Phyllostachys nigra Munro)] and maengjong-juk extract coated rice were evaluated for antimutagenicity by Ames test using Salmonella typhimurium TA100. Bamboo extracts showed strong antimutagenic activity in the Ames test which MNNG was used as mutagen in the absence and presence of S9 mix. Maengjong-juk extract coated rice diet suppressed the loss of body weight significantly. Food intake was increased in maengjong-juk extract coated rice supplemented group but showed no significant differences between control and maengjong-juk extract coated rice diet groups. Food efficiency of maengjong-juk extract coated rice supplemented group was significantly higher than that of the control group. Liver weight was significantly increased by maengjong-juk extract coated rice diet administration. Plasma GOT & GPT activities of rabbit were significantly suppressed in maengjong-juk extract coated rice supplemented group. These results suggest that bamboo trees extracts and maengjong-juk extract coated rice are bioavailable resource on treatment of cardiovascular disease, such as atherosclerosis and hypercholesterolemia.

Storage-life Extension of Maengjong-Juk (Phyllostachys pubescens) Sap Using Heat Treatments (열처리에 의한 맹종죽 수액의 저장성 향상)

  • In order to increase the shelf-life of Phyllostachys pubescens sap heating conditions were investigated. To evaluate the quality changes of Phyllostachys pubescens sap before and after heating at $70^{\circ}C$ for 30 min, pH, total microbial number and sensory characteristics were measured during storage periods at $2^{\circ}C$. During 10 days, the quality and sensory characteristics of Phyllostachys pubescens sap were maintained.

Antioxidative Effects of Korean Bamboo Trees, Wang-dae, Som-dae, Maengjong-juk, Jolit-dae and O-juk (한국산 왕대, 솜대, 맹종죽, 조릿대 및 오죽의 항산화 효과)

  • Bamboo trees have been used for a long time as folk remedies for treatment of hypertension and stroke symptoms in Oriental regions. These pharmaceutical effects of bamboos look like to be related to its antioxidant capacity and phytochemicals in bamboos. To evaluate the antioxidative effects of bamboo trees, five kinds of bamboo varieties dominant in Korean peninsular were chosen and determined its total antioxidaive activities, free radical scavenging activities and nitrite scavenging activities by TEAC (Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity) assay, DPPH and Griess reagent assay using in vitro system, respectively. To evaluate the correlation between antioxidative activities and Maillard reaction during hot water extraction, contents of reducing sugar and total nitrogen and brown color intensity at 420 nm were determined. When total antioxidative activities, free radical scavenging activities and nitrite scavenging activities of five kinds of bamboo trees were compared, wang-dae (Phyllostachys bambusoides S. et Z.) showed the strongest effect among samples, although all kinds of extracts showed relatively strong effects against oxidation. The bamboo culms extract showed stronger antioxidative effects than that of bamboo leaves. In each fraction obtained from 70% ethanol extract, antioxidative effect were increased in order of dichloromethane>ethyl acetate>butanol>water>hexane fraction. In reducing sugar analysis of extracts, reducing sugar contents of water extracts were higher than that of 70% ethanol extracts and wang-dae water extract showed the highest level which was 708.92 mg/g. Total nitrogen contents of the extracts were $1.785{\sim}2.605\;mg%$ and contents in water extracts were lower than that in 70% ethanol extracts. Brown color intensity at 420 nm showed similar tendency with results in reducing sugar contents.
