  • This study examines the influence of geometry on the internal flow and macroscopic behavior of the spray in Diesel nozzles. For this investigation, two bi-orifice nozzles were employed: one cylindrical and one conical. The first step is to use a non-destructive characterization method which is based on the production of silicone moulds so that the precise internal geometry of the two nozzles can be measured. At this stage the nozzles have been characterized dimensionally and therefore the internal flow can be studied using CFD calculations. The results gained from this experiment make it possible also to ascertain the critical cavitation conditions. Once the critical cavitation conditions have been identified, the macroscopic parameters of the spray can be studied in both cavitating and non-cavitating conditions using a test rig pressurized with nitrogen and with the help of a image acquisition system and image processing software. Consequently, research can be carried out to determine the influence that cavitation has on macroscopic spray behavior. From the point of view of the spray macroscopic behavior, the main conclusion of the paper is that cavitation leads to an increment of the spray cone angle. On the other hand, from the point of view of the internal flow, the hole outlet velocity increases when cavitation appears. This phenomenon can be explained by the reduction in the cross section of the liquid phase in the outlet section of the hole.

  • Drawn polyethylene was studied by 13C cross polarization magic angle spinning techniques. Solid-solid phase transition from orthorhombic to monoclinic crystalline phase by drawing was observed. In addition, using a synchronized magic angle spinning 2 dimension technique, we confirmed that macroscopic ordering of the polyethylene was produced by drawing.

  • During cleaning steps, ultrafiltration membranes are mechanically and chemically stressed. This may result in membrane degradations and failures. In this paper, polysulfone membranes were used to evaluate membrane deteriorations by commercial detergents in static conditions. Ageing of the membrane was simulated by immersing samples in solutions containing commercial detergents with various concentrations, temperatures and times defined by experimental designs. Indeed, an innovative approach in the chemical membranes ageing researches, based on methodological tools, was used in order to achieve significant ageing experiments without using an accelerated ageing protocol. The macroscopic changes were monitored by permeability measurements and mechanical strength tests coupled with a microscopic characterization by ATR-FTIR and HRSEM. The present work details results obtained for three commercial detergents: an alkaline, an acidic and an enzymatic detergent. It was found that the detergents used in the industrial advised conditions (concentration, temperature and time of contact) were not detrimental for membrane properties (permeability and elongation at break) and so for the quality of the produced water. Over the industrial cumulated time of contact, different ageing effects can be observed and compared with the ones induced by NaOCl.

  • The linear electro-optic (EO) effect is one of the second-order nonlinear optical effects existing in a noncentrosymmetric macroscopic system. In a polymer thin film, the noncentrosymmetry is achieved by electric field poling. The magnitude of the linear EO response is determined through the orientational distribution function of hyperpolarizable molecular dipoles. The relation between the linear EO coefficient and the second-order nonlinear optical susceptibility is explained. Three different methods of measuring the linear EO coefficient of a poled nonliner optical polymer thin film are introduced and discussed. All of them make use of the interferometric technique, the difference being in the optical parameters which are interfering.

  • Brazil is considered as a great broiler feet exporter, especially for the Chinese trade. Contact lesions at the tibiotarsal region are responsible for economic losses and there is no model for its classification, thereby this study presents a fast and practical grade system to be used in the poultry industry and proposes these lesion characterizations into three different grades. For this, correlation was made between macroscopic, histological findings and microbiological quantification (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp. and sulphite-reducing clostridia) from contact lesions in the tibiotarsal region of 112 broiler carcasses, divided in four groups (n=28), accordingly to the lesion's intensity. There were no significant differences in microbiological quantification among the groups (p>0.05) except for the grade 3 group, as grade 1 and 2 lesions were in the early stages and histopathological changes such as ulceration were not observed. In grade 3 lesion group, it was observed bacterial cocci grume and ulceration at the articular region and significantly higher microbiological count (p<0.05) for E. coli and Staphylococcus spp. In conclusion, the visual standard proposed in this work, correlated and confirmed by the histopathologic, and microbiologic characterization, allows to precise and fast ascertainment of the contact lesion grade in the tibiotarsal regions of broiler carcasses. Moreover, it should be highlighted that grades 1 and 2 alterations are not caused by an inflammatory process caused by pathogenic agents and should not be considered a public health risk.

  • Characteristics of two favorite injection tools for gasoline direct injection application were compared. An air-assisted fuel injector (AAFI) and a high-pressure swirl injector (HPSI) were designed and fabricated for prototype development, and the characterization strategies and processes for both injection tool have been arranged in parallel. Characterization works were carried out mainly through measurements, and in some cases, computational fluid dynamic analysis was utilized. In this paper, overall characteristics defined as flow rate, spray pattern, penetration, internal spray structure and drop size distribution, was discussed. The AAFI was found to be advantageous in flexibility of fuel flow rate, and the HPSI in stability and precision. Spray shape factor was introduced to describe the development of intermittent sprays from both injectors. Axial penetration appeared to be almost linear in the case of the AAFI while its speed continuously decreased with time in the HPSI.

  • Polyanion-polycation complexes had been known for a long time on an empirical basis fromthe mutual precipitation of proteins, before Kossel at the end of the previous century recognized the electrostatic nature of the interaction between oppositely charged polyions. The formation of polyelectmlyte complexes is essentially a result of the electrostatic nature of the interaction between oppositely charged polyions. This interaction in the macroscopic homogeneous system the phase transition by polysalt precipitation as well as the chemical and physical structure of polyelectrolyte complex membranes have been intensively investigated from the themodynamical and kinetical point of view.

  • $ LiNbO_3$ single crystals were grown using the Czochralski Method at various pulling speeds. Macroscopic defects such as cracks, bubbles and cellular structures were observed in some crystals. Cracks and bubbles observed in the crystals depended on the pulling speed and cooling rate. $ LiNbO_3$ crystals of about 15mm diameter could be grown properly at 6-7mm/h pulling speed and $ 20^{circ}C/h$ cooling rate. In order to investigate dielectric properties and optical properties for device application, these properties were measured for the sample cut along a axis and c axis at different temperatures.

  • The frequency response analysis of complex impedance spectra using small perturbation ac impedance spectroscopy is an informative method of OLED performance characterization and lifetime analysis. Using simple RC equivalent circuit mode,l macroscopic nonliniear transport properties of semiconductive emission/transport layers can be analyzed and parameterized. We present the bias voltage dependence and aging effect in impedance spectra measured from an ITO/CuPC/TPD/$Alq_3$/LiF/Al OLED device, and discuss possible failure mechanism based on impedance model parameters.

  • The Cu-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) composite was fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) using of gas-atomized metallic glass powders and ductile brass powders. No defect such as pores and cavities was observed at the interface between the brass powder and the metallic glass matrix, suggesting that the SPS process caused a severe viscous flow of the metallic glass and brass phases in the supercooled liquid region, resulting in a full densification. The BMG composites shows some macroscopic plasticity after yielding, although the levels of strength decreased.
