  • Over the past 20 years there has been a revolution involving the use of nano or macro size particles as drainage and retention systems during the manufacture of paper. More recently a group of patented technologies called Synthetic Mineral Microparticles (SMM) has been invented and developed. This system has potential to further promote the drainage of water and retention of fine particles during papermaking. Prior research, as well as our on preliminary research showed that the SMM system has advantages in both of drainage and retention compared with montmorillonite (bentonite), which one of the most popular materials presently used in this kind of application. In spite of the demonstrated advantages of this SMM system, the properties and activity of SMM particles in the aqueous state have not been elucidated yet. Streaming current titrations with highly charged polyelectrolytes were used to measure the charge properties of SMM and to understand the interactions among SMM particles, fibers, fiber fines, and cationic polyacrylamide (cPAM) as a retention aid. It was found that pH profoundly affects the charge properties of SMM, due to the influence of Al-ions and the Si-containing particle surface. SEM pictures, characterizing the morphology, geometry and size distribution of SMM, showed an broad distribution of primary particle size. Dilution of SMM mixturee appeared to wash out particles smaller than 100 nm from the surface of larger particles, which themselves appeared to be composed of fused primary particles. DSC thermoporometry was used to measure the size distribution of nanopores within SMM particles.

  • In recent years, traditional scaffold fabrication techniques such as gas foaming, salt leaching, sponge replica, and freeze casting in tissue engineering have significantly limited sufficient mechanical property and cell interaction effect due to only random pores. Fused deposition modeling is the most apposite technology for fabricating the 3D scaffolds using the polymeric materials in tissue engineering application. In this study, 3D slurry mould was fabricated with a blended biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP)/Silica/Alginic acid sodium salt slurry in PCL mould and heated for two hours at $100^{\circ}C$ to harden the blended slurry. 3D dual-pore BCP/Silica scaffold, composed of macro pores interconnected with micro pores, was successfully fabricated by sintering at furnace of $1100^{\circ}C$. Surface morphology and 3D shape of dual-pore BCP/Silica scaffold from scanning electron microscopy were observed. Also, the mechanical properties of 3D BCP/Silica scaffold, according to blending ratio of alginic acid sodium salt, were evaluated through compression test.

  • Macro- and micro-behaviors of soluble granular media during dissolution process is investigated by numerical analysis. Soluble media are represented by assemblies of non-soluble particles and soluble particles with the different soluble particles contents. Dissolutions of particles are implemented by reducing sizes of soluble particles. The numerical simulations results exhibit that the vertical displacements increase to certain times and become constant while the porosities still increase until no soluble particles are present. However, the porosities and vertical displacements increase with the increase of soluble particles content. The microscopic views show that the fabrics of media change during dissolution process until the certain times, the higher soluble particles contents, and the larger change in fabric.

  • In this study we analysed 3-12 grade science textbooks, many literatures and internet sites related to diffusion and dissolution concepts. From these data, we discovered that the explanations of diffusion that used in textbooks are not considered the site of collision with mediums, and confused with dissolution, state transition and effusion. In the case of dissolution, almost analysis data were short of the explanations of interaction effect. Most of all, the focus of dissolution explanations was to solve the calculation problems rather than to understand the concept. Every internet site was poor, just as the level of showing textbook contents with computer, so the only effect of using computer was the sense of sight and hearing. Chemistry must be understood nature phenomena with a view point of particle theory, but many textbooks and Internet sites didn't represent it sufficiently. We set up the correct scientific concept and linked micro world of particle theory with macro world of nature phenomena. With a use of computer which have the advantage of representing moving things, we developed the computer-assisted instruction programs related to diffusion and dissolution with the viewpoint of particle movement.

  • Dissimilar friction welding were produced using 15(mm) diameter solid bar in chrome molybedenum steel(KS SCM440) to carbon steel(KS S45C) to investigate their mechanical properties. The main friction welding parameters were selected to endure good quality welds on the basis of visual examination, tensile tests, Vickers hardness surveys of the bond of area and H.A.Z and microstructure investigations. The specimens were tested as-welded and post-weld heat treated(PWHT). The tensile strength of the friction welded steel bars was increased up to 100% of the S45C base metal under the condition of all heating time. Optimal welding conditions were n=2,000(rpm), $P_1=60(MPa),\;P_2=100(MPa),\;t_1=4(s),\;t_2=5(s)$ when the total upset length is 5.4 and 5.7(mm), respectively. The peak of hardness distribution of the friction welded joints can be eliminated by PWHT. Two different kinds of materials are strongly mixed to show a well-combined structure of macro-particles without any molten material and particle growth or any defects.

  • The fuel spray behavior in the intake port of an electronic control port irijection gasoline engine has a strong influence on engine performance, exhaust emission and fuel consumption. Thus, in this study, fuel spray behavior and flow characteristics of the air assist gasoline spray injected into a suction flow in a simulated rectangular intake port have boon investigated. Macro-behavior of spray characteristics was investigated by means of visualization and the measurements of SMD and velocity were made by PDPA. For analysis the flow field with droplets size, droplets are classified five droplets size groups. As a result, the normal distance of suction flow increasing, the relatively large droplets distribution and SMD increase because small droplets easily follow suction flow. Near impinging wail, after impinging against the wall, secondary atomized small droplets of D < $30{\mu}m$ bound from the wall. And the increasement of suction flow progress to the large droplets of D > $100{\mu}m$ distribution. Therefore, SMD are apparently increased near impinging wall, Z/d = 9.0.

  • The focus of this study is placed on the behavior characteristics of gasoline spray under condition field of room temperature and pressure. To analyze the behavior and flow characteristics of injected fuel spray is important in speculation of mixture formation process. Also the exhausted emissions from actual engines can be controlled by the analyzed results. The ${\varphi}$(degree of freedom) and K(energy ratio of particle motion) are selected as the simulation parameter. The factors affect characteristics of spray structure, and the factors are included in the sub-program of the KIVA-II code. In this study, the simulation study by modified KIVA-II code was conducted and the calculated results obtained by the modified KIVA-II code show good agreements with experimental results. As a result, applying the improved TAB model with ${\varphi}$=8 and K=2 to simulation analysis of the KIVA-II code is sufficiently useful for analyzing the macro characteristics in spray structure, such as the spray tip penetration of injected fuel spray.

  • In this paper, mode I fracture toughness of rock was determined by direct and indirect methods using Particle Flow Code simulation. Direct methods are compaction tension (CT) test and hollow centre cracked quadratic sample (HCCQS). Indirect methods are notched Brazilian disk (NBD) specimen, the semi-circular bend (SCB) specimen, hollow centre cracked disc (HCCD), the single edge-notched round bar in bending (SENRBB) specimen and edge notched disk (END). It was determined that which one of indirect fracture toughness values is close to direct one. For this purpose, initially calibration of PFC was undertaken with respect to data obtained from Brazilian laboratory tests to ensure the conformity of the simulated numerical models response. Furthermore, the simulated models in five introduced indirect tests were cross checked with the results from direct tests. By using numerical testing, the failure process was visually observed. Discrete element simulations demonstrated that the macro fractures in models are caused by microscopic tensile breakages on large numbers of bonded discs. Mode I fracture toughness of rock in direct test was less than other tests results. Fracture toughness resulted from semi-circular bend specimen test was close to direct test results. Therefore semi-circular bend specimen can be a proper test for determination of Mode I fracture toughness of rock in absence of direct test.

  • The long-term stability of rock engineering is significantly affected by the time-dependent deformation behavior of rock, which is an important mechanical property of rock for engineering design. Although the hard rocks show small creep deformation, it cannot be ignored under high-stress condition during deep excavation. The inner mechanism of creep is complicated, therefore, it is necessary to investigate the relationship between microscopic creep mechanism and the macro creep behavior of rock. Microscopic numerical modeling of sandstone creep was performed in the investigation. A numerical sandstone sample was generated and Parallel Bond contact and Burger's contact model were assigned to the contacts between particles in DEM simulation. Sensitivity analysis of the microscopic creep parameters was conducted to explore how microscopic parameters affect the macroscopic creep deformation. The results show that the microscopic creep parameters have linear correlations with the corresponding macroscopic creep parameters, whereas the friction coefficient shows power function with peak strength and Young's modulus, respectively. Moreover, the microscopic parameters were calibrated. The creep modeling curve is in good agreement with the verification test result. Finally, the creep curves under one-step loading and multi-step loading were compared. This investigation can act as a helpful reference for modeling rock creep behavior from a microscopic mechanism perspective.
