A Case Report on Fungal Contamination and Remediation in a Leakage-water Damaged Apartment

  • 이 사례연구는 누수가 있었던 고층 아파트의 공기중 진균 오염 실태를 조사하고, 이를 개선하기 위해 취해진 복원방법의 효과를 평가하기 위해 실시하였다. 공기중 진균은 주로 엔더슨 샘플러를 사용하여 측정하였다. 누수가 있었던 아파트의 복원 전 공기중 진균 농도는 매우 높았다(평균: $51,000\;cfu/m^{3}$, 기하평균: $40,163\;cfu/m^{3}$). 고농도의 오존처리와 오염된 벽체 철거 후 공기중 진균 농도는 상대적으로 매우 낮아졌으며(평균: $1,118\;cfu/m^{3}$, 기하평균: $899\;cfu/m^{3}$), 제거효율은 96.3%로 나타났다. 철거되지 않고 남아 있던 인근 벽체의 벽지를 제거하고 살진균제 처리를 실시한 결과, 공기중 진균 농도는 상대적으로 안전한 수준까지 낮아졌으며(평균: $95\;cfu/m^{3}$, 기하평균: $88\;cfu/m^{3}$), 제거효율은 99.7 %로, 나타났다. 결론적으로, 누수가 있었던 아파트의 공기중 진균 농도는 매우 높은 상태로 오염이 심한 상태이었으나, 본 연구에서 적용한 복원방법들은 공기중 진균 농도 저감에 있어서 매우 높은 효율을 나타냈다.

여대생의 건강증진 생활양식과 스트레스 및 우울 (Health Promoting Lifestyle, Stress, and Depression of the College Female Students)

  • The purposes of this study were to examine the relationships among health promoting lifestyle, stress. depression, and general characteristics and to reveal these variables affecting depression in college female students. The data were collected between November 29th and December 4th. 1999 by using self-administered questionnaire. Data analysis were conducted by using Peason's correlation. t-test, ANOVA. stepwise multiple regression. The results were as follows : 1. Health promoting lifestyle was significantly different by religion, smoking. school record, perceived health status. satisfaction of school life, and department. 2. The mean score of stress was 2.28. the level of stress showed significant differences according to economic status, perceived health status, and satisfaction of school life. 3. The mean score of depression was 12.05. the level of depression showed significant differences according to religion, smoking, school record, economic status. perceived health status, satisfaction. of school life, and department. 4. The mean score of health promoting lifestyle was 2.43. both interpersonal relationship(M=2.96) and self-actualization(M=2.79) of the subscales of health promoting lifestyle revealed high scores, whereas the scores of health responsibility(M=2.07), and exercise (M=1.64) were below. 5. Negative correlations were observed between health promoting lifestyle and stress(r=-.21), between heath promoting lifestyle and depression(r=-38). Positive correlations were observed between stress and depression(r= .60). 6. Negative correlations were observed between self-actualization(r=-.29). nutrition Cr=-.17), and stress management(r=-.17) domains of health promoting lifestyle and stress. 7. Negative correlations were observed between self-actualization(r=-.47), nutrition (r=-.31), stress management(r=-.25), interpersonal relationship(r=-.23), health responsibility(r=-.13), and exercise(r=-.l1) domains of health promoting lifestyle and depression. 8. Depression was significantly predicted by stress$(36.2\%)$, health promoting lifestyle $(7.0\%)$. these variables explained $43.2\%$ of variance of depression.

용접사업장 근로자의 흄 및 금속 노출농도에 대한 평가와 혈중 금속 농도 (Airborne Concentrations of Welding Fume and Metals of Workers Exposed to Welding Fume)

  • Airborne concentrations of welding fumes in which 13 different metals such as Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Si, Sn, Ti, and Zn were analyzed were measured at 18 factories including automobile assembly and manufactures, steel heavy industries and shipyards. Air samples were collected by personal sampler at each worker's worksite(n=339). Blood levels of Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn were also measured from samples taken from 447 welders by atomic absorption spectrometry and compared with control values obtained from 127 non-exposed workers. The results were as follows ; 1. Among various welding types, $CO_2$ welding 70.2 % were widely used, shielded metal arc welding(SMAW) 22.1 % came next, and rest of them were metal inert gas(MIG) welding, submerged arc welding(SAW), spot welding(SPOT) and tungsten inert gas(TIG) welding. 2. Welding fume concentration was $0.92mg/m^3$($0.02{\sim}15.33mg/m^3$) at automobile assembly and manufactures, $4.10mg/m^3$($0.02{\sim}70.75mg/m^3$) at steel heavy industries and $5.59mg/m^3$($0.30{\sim}91.16mg/m^3$) at shipyards, respectively, showing significant difference among industry types. Workers exposed to high concentration of welding fumes above Korean Permissible Exposure Limit(KPEL) amounted to 7.9 % and 12.5 %, in $CO_2$ welding and in SMAW at automobile assembly and manufactures and 62.7 % in $CO_2$ welding, and 12.5 % in SMAW at shipyards, and 66.2 % in $CO_2$ welding and 70.6 % in SMAW at steel heavy industries. 3. Geometric mean of airborne concentration of each metal released from welding fumes was below one 10th of KPEL in all welding types. Percentage of workers, however, exposed to airborne concentration of metals above KPEL amounted to 16.8 % in Mn and 7.6 % in Fe in $CO_2$ welding; 37.5 % in Cu in SAW, 30 % in Cu in TIG; and 25 % in Pb in SPOT welding. As a whole, 76 Workers(22.4%) were exposed to high concentration of any of the metals above KPEL. 4. There were differences in airborne concentration of metals such as Al, Cd, Cr, Cu. Fe. Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Si, Sn, Ti and Zn by industry types. These concentrations were higher in shipyards and steel heavy industries than in automobile assembly and manufactures. Workers exposed to higher concentration of Pb above KPEI amounted to 7.4 % of workers(7/94) in automobile assembly and manufactures. In shipyards, 19.2 % of workers(19/99) were over-exposed to Mn and 7.1 % (7/99) to Fe above KPEL. In steel heavy industries, 14.4 %(21/146), 7.5 %(11/146) and 13 %(19/146) were over-exposed to Mn, Fe and Cu, respectively. As a whole, 76 out of 339 workers(22.4%) were exposed to any of the metals above KPEL. 5. Blood levels of Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, and Zn in welders were $0.11{\mu}g/100m{\ell}$, $0.84{\mu}g/m{\ell}$, $424.4{\mu}g/m{\ell}$, $1.26{\mu}g/100m{\ell}$, $5.01{\mu}g/100m{\ell}$ and $5.68{\mu}g/m{\ell}$, respectively, in contrast to $0.09{\mu}g/100m{\ell}$, $0.70{\mu}g/m{\ell}$, $477.2{\mu}g/m{\ell}$, $0.73{\mu}g/100m{\ell}$, $3.14{\mu}g/100m{\ell}$ and $6.15{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ in non-exposed control groups, showing significantly higher values in welders but Fe and Zn.

Inhibition of a Neutral Form of Sphingomyelinase by Alkylthioureido-l,3-propandiols, KY353X Series

  • Alkylthioureido-1,3-propandiols (KY353X series) were synthesized and evaluated as inhibitors for neutral sphingomyelinase (N-SMase). To examine whether KY353X series inhibit N-SMase, we purified the N-SMase from bovine brain. The N-SMase was partially purified by sequential chromatographies of DEAE-Cellulose anionic exchange and phenyl-5PW hydrophobic HPLC. These seqeuntial procedures for N-SMase resulted in a 67-fold purification and excluded other isoforms of SMase. Based on in vitro assay, KY353X series inhibited N-SMase activity in time, concentration-dependent manners and completely inactivated N-SMase at 50 $\mu$M. In particular, KY3535 and KY3536 inhibited more effectively than the others. To further determine the .inhibitory pattern, a Dixon plot was constructed, to showing that the inhibition by KY3535 and KY3536 were competitive. The inhibition constant (Ki) of KY3535 and KY3536 was 1.7 $\mu$M and 2.5$\mu$M in 100 mM Tris-HCl buffer, pH 7.0, respectively.

일부 공단지역 내 이산화질소의 개인노출 농도 및 건강위해성평가 (Personal Exposure Level and Health Risk Assessment of Nitrogen Dioxide in an Industrial Area)

  • This study was conducted to estimate nitrogen dioxide levels and health risk in various locations/situations for two groups. The nitrogen dioxide levels were measured for residents of a study group (industrial area within 5 km) and a control group (15 km farther), respectively using the nitrogen dioxide filter badge as a passive sampler from August, 2006 to September, 2006. The means of indoor, outdoor, work and personal levels of nitrogen dioxide were $34.65{\pm}1.95\;{\mu}g/m^3$, $34.83{\pm}11.78\;{\mu}g/m^3$, $34.98{\pm}19.11$ and $35.38{\pm}10.74$ respectively in the study area. Mean ratio of indoor to outdoor $NO_2$ concentration was 0.99. The means of indoor, outdoor and personal level of nitrogen dioxide were $23.66{\pm}7.19\;{\mu}g/m^3$, $18.22{\pm}4.06\;{\mu}g/m^3$ and $27.27{\pm}18.93\;{\mu}g/m^3$ respectively in the control area. Mean ratio of indoor to outdoor $NO_2$ concentration was 1.39. People spent 80.9% of their time in indoor at the study area and 76.9% at the control area. The percentages of time spent in outdoor were 14.9% and 20.9% at the study area and the control area respectively. The percentages of time spent in a car were 4.2% and 2.2% in the study and control areas respectively. The levels of indoor, outdoor, workplace nitrogen dioxide in the study area and the control area were found below the permissible level of health-hazardous effects.

MDCT의 관전압, 관전류, 슬라이스 두께 변화에 따른 팬텀의 선량 분포 측정 (Dose Measurements using Phantoms for Tube Voltage, Tube Current, Slice Thickness in MDCT)

  • 본 연구는 MDCT (multi-detector computed tomography) 파라미터 변화에 따른 환자선량을 측정하고 평가 하고자 하였다. MDCT 파라미터의 다양한 변화에 의한 환자선량은 MDCT (GE light speed plus 4 slice, USA)와 model 2026C electrometer (RADICAL 2026C, USA), 그리고 head와 body의 CT선량 표준팬텀(standard polymethylmethacrylate)을 사용하여 측정 하였다. 그 결과 환자선량 $CTDI_w$ 값은 관전압과 관전류가 증가할수록 선형적으로 증가하였고 beam collimation이 증가 할수록 감소하였다. 따라서 관전압, 관전류는 환자의 피폭선량에 직접적인 영향을 주고 슬라이스 두께는 영향이 적은 것을 알 수 있었다. 임상의 전형적인 MDCT 복부 scan에서 120 kVp, 180 mAs, 20 mm collimation과 0.75 pitch의 조건하에 $CTDI_w$$CTDI_{vol}$의 측정값은 각각 20.2 mGy, 26.9 mGy이었고 스캔 길이가 271.3 mm인 환자의 DLP와 유효선량은 각각 $729.1\;mGy{\cdot}cm$, 10.9 mSv였다.

Associations between Psychological Distress and Body Mass Index among Law Enforcement Officers: The National Health Interview Survey 2004-2010

  • Objectives: To investigate the association between psychological distress and obesity among law enforcement officers (LEOs) in the United States. Methods: Self-reported data on psychological distress based on six key questions were obtained from LEOs who participated in the National Health Interview Survey (2004-2010). We used Prochaska's cut-point of a Kessler 6 score ${\geq}5$ for moderate/high mental distress in our analysis. Mean levels of body mass index (BMI) were compared across three levels of psychological distress. Results: The average age of LEOs (n = 929) was 39.3 years; 25% were female. Overall, 8.1% of LEOs had moderate or high psychological distress; 37.5% were obese (BMI ${\geq}30$). Mean BMI increased with increasing psychological distress (no distress, BMI = $27.2kg/m^2$; mild distress, $27.6kg/m^2$; and moderate/high distress, $33.1kg/m^2$; p = 0.016) after adjustment for age, race, income, and education level among female officers only. Physical activity modified the association between psychological distress and BMI but only among male LEOs (interaction p = 0.002). Among male LEOs reporting low physical activity, psychological distress was positively associated with BMI ($30.3kg/m^2$ for no distress, 30.7 for mild distress, 31.8 for moderate/high distress; p = 0.179) after adjustment, but not significantly. This association was not significant among males reporting high physical activity. Conclusion: Mean BMI significantly increased as psychological distress increased among female LEOs. A longitudinal study design may reveal the directionality of this association as well as the potential role that physical activity might play in this association.

커피전문점에서 흡연 및 금연구역의 분리형태에 따른 PM2.5 농도 비교 (Comparison of PM2.5 Concentrations in Smoking and Non-smoking Areas by Division System in Coffee Shops)

  • Under the Enforcement Rules of the National Health Promotion Act, smoking areas in coffee shops in Korea should be divided off from other areas. The effect on indoor air quality of different division types for smoking areas was evaluated. Using real-time monitors, fine particulate matter <2.5 ${\mu}m$ in diameter ($PM_{2.5}$) concentrations were measured simultaneously in the smoking and non-smoking areas of 30 coffee shops in Seoul. Average $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations in smoking and non-smoking areas were 132 ${\mu}g/m^3$ and 52 ${\mu}g/m^3$, respectively; significantly different. Average $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations in non-smoking areas were 39 ${\mu}g/m^3$ in the glass-wall type and 64 ${\mu}g/m^3$ in the separate-floor type. These $PM_{2.5}$ levels were above the US national ambient air quality standard of 35 ${\mu}g/m^3$. Although indoor $PM_{2.5}$ levels in non-smoking areas were reduced by the division, the rates of reduction were not significantly different by division type. Our results demonstrated that $PM_{2.5}$ from smoking areas can infiltrate into non-smoking areas. Therefore, a complete indoor smoking ban in coffee shops is the only way to protect customers and workers in non-smoking areas.

나무 종류에 따른 공기중 분진 농도와 입경 분포에 관한 연구 (Air concentration and particle size distribution of wood dust during wood-working processes)

  • Wood dust is created when machines are used to cut or shape wood materials. Industries of high risk of wood dust exposure are sawmills, dimension mills, furniture industries, and carpenters, etc. Health effects associated with wood dust exposure includes dermatitis, allergic respiratory effects and cancer. Health effects of wood dus t are mainly depend on the concentration, dust size and exposure time. This study were carried out to evaluate the concentration and particle size distribution of wood dust during working processes. The subjects of this study were 53 workers exposed to wood dust in 7 furniture factories and 5 musical instruments, and 5 sawmill factories. The average total wood dust concentrations measured by personal cascade impactor were $1.82{\pm}2.31mg/m^3$ in primary manufacture, $3.59{\pm}1.72mg/m^3$ in s econdary manufacture, $5.09{\pm}1.46mg/m^3$ in sanding operation. Mass median diameters of hardwoods dust were $3.36{\mu}m$ in primary manufacture, $4.25{\mu}m$ in secondary manufacture, $4.21{\mu}m$ in sanding operation. softwoods dust were $3.39{\mu}m$ in primary manufacture, $4.34{\mu}m$ in secondary manufacture. Particle size distributions showed a nearly the same pattern in each working processes. The sample concentration of all hardwood dust exceeded the Threshold Limit Value(TLV) and 20.8% of the softwood dust exceeded the Threshold Limit Value. The range of size distribution were $0.5-10{\mu}m$ in the soft and hardwood dust. The respirable dust of soft and hardwood took up 59% and above. Therefore new threshold limit value for wood dust should be needed in Korea. Also, it should be done for various studies on health effects related to occupational exposure of wood dust.

금속가공유 취급 작업장의 생물학적 인자 노출평가 (Microbial Assessment in Metal-Working Fluids Handling Industry)

  • Objectives: The objective of this study is to evaluate microbial exposure hazards in the metal-working fluids(MWF) handling industry. Methods: Air quality parameters(airborne bacteria, fungi, endotoxin and oil mist) and bulk MWF in storage tanks were evaluated at 54 points at nine sites in South Korea. Results: The geometric means(GM) of culturable airborne bacteria, fungi, endotoxin and oil mist concentration were $133CFU/m^3$(n=376, range $7{\sim}6,510CFU/m^3$), $159CFU/m^3$(n=381, range $7{\sim}8,469CFU/m^3$), $8.06EU/m^3$(n=103, range $0.34{\sim}280.4EU/m^3$) and $0.20mg/m^3$(n=104, range $0.01{\sim}2.87mg/m^3$), respectively. The ratio of indoor to outdoor concentration was 2.7 for bacteria, 6.1 for endotoxin, and 4.8 for oil mist. Even though average airborne bacteria concentration did not exceed recommended exposure limits($1,000CFU/m^3$), MWF in the storage tanks was highly contaminated with bacteria(arithmetic mean $2.1{\times}10^6CFU/ml$) and exceeded recommended bacteria limits($10^5CFU/ml$). Conclusions: It is necessary for MWF handling workplaces to conduct periodical biohazard inspection of MWF storage tanks. Additionally, further research may be necessary to establish biological occupational exposure limits.
