A physical lumped parameter model is proposed for the time domain analysis of dam-reservoir system. The exact solution of transmitting boundary is derived for a semi-infinite 2-D reservoir of constant depth. The characteristics of the solution are examined in both frequency and the domains. Mass and damping coefficient are obtained from asymptotic behavior of the frequency domain solution. Further refinement to the lumped model is made by approximating the kernel function of the convolution integral in the exact solution. Finally a new physical lumped parameter model is proposed that consists of two masses, a spring and two dampers for each mode. It is demonstrated that new lumped parameter model of transmitting boundary can give excellent results.

The paper presents both theoretical and experimental study for dynamic instabilities of a vertical cantilevered pipe with two attached lumped masses conveying fluid. The two attached lumped masses can be considered as valves or some mechanical parts in real pipe system. Eigenvalue behaviors depending on the flow velocity are investigated for the change of positions and magnitudes of an attached lumped mass and a tip mass. In order to verify appropriaty of numerical solutions, experiments were accomplished. Theoretical predictions have a good agreement with experimental ones.

In this paper, the lumped element model parameter estimation method and its implemented estimation software for fabricated floating mass transducers of IMEHDs have been presented so that the estimated parameter values could be compared with the designed ones and applied to predict the output performance when the transducers were implanted into human ears. The presented method is based on the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) for estimating parameters in the transducer's lumped model and has been implemented by the use of LabVIEW graphical language. Using the implemented estimation software, the accuracy of parameter estimation has been verified and our implemented estimation method has been evaluated by the comparison of the estimated transducer parameter values with the designed ones for a practically fabricated floating mass transducer for IMEHDs.

The Core Support Barrel (CSB) is a major component of Reactor Internals, and is designed to support and protect the Reactor Core. In this study, Reactor Core, Core Shroud and CSB were simplified to coaxial cylinders and then the offset of Reactor Core & Core Shroud to the dynamic characteristic of CSB was analyzed. For the beam modes, natural frequencies of the cantilevered cylinder are compared with those of the cantilevered beam. And it was found out that shear modulus must be used correctly to convert the shell model to the equivalent beam model. From the dynamic characteristics of the beam model, it was found out that natural frequencies are proportional to the length of Reactor Core & Core Shroud and inversely proportional to the mass. From the comparison with the dynamic characteristics of a beam model and a lumped-mass model it was found out that the size of lumped-mass must be determined considering both the length and the mass of Reactor Core & Core Shroud.

The Richards equation for water movement in unsaturated soil is highly nonlinear partial differential equations which are not solvable analytically unless unrealistic and oversimplifying assumptions are made regarding the attributes, dynamics, and properties of the physical systems. Therefore, conventionally, numerical solutions are the only feasible procedures to model flow in partially saturated porous media. The standard Finite element numerical technique is usually coupled with an Euler time discretizations scheme. Except for the fully explicit forward method, any other Euler time-marching algorithm generates nonlinear algebraic equations which should be solved using iterative procedures such as Newton and Picard iterations. In this study, lumped mass and distributed mass in the frame of Picard and Newton iterative techniques were evaluated to determine the most efficient method to solve the Richards equation with finite element model. The accuracy and computational efficiency of the scheme and of the Picard and Newton models are assessed for three test problems simulating one-dimensional flow processes in unsaturated porous media. Results demonstrated that, the conventional mass distributed finite element method suffers from numerical oscillations at the wetting front, especially for very dry initial conditions. Even though small mesh sizes are applied for all the test problems, it is shown that the traditional mass-distributed scheme can still generate an incorrect response due to the highly nonlinear properties of water flow in unsaturated soil and cause numerical oscillation. On the other hand, non oscillatory solutions are obtained and non-physics solutions for these problems are evaded by using the mass-lumped finite element method.
In the beam-like ship vibration analysis. three-dimensional correction factor(J-factor) can be calculated by considering the three-dimensional effect of the two-dimensional added mass. However, existing method is time-consuming with low accuracy in respect of global vibration analyses for vessels with large breadth. In this paper, to improve the demerit of the previous method, a new method of the beam-like ship vibration analysis is introduced In this method. the three-dimensional fluid added mass of surrounding water is calculated directly by solving the velocity potential problem using the Boundary Element Method (BEM). Then the three-dimensional added mass is evaluated as the lumped mass for each strip. Also, the beam-like ship vibration analysis for the structural beam model if performed with the lumped mass considered. It was verified that this new method is useful for the beam-like ship vibration analysis by comparing results obtained from both the existing method and the new method with experimental measurements for the open top container model.

The present study concerns the simulation of supply-air control in a variable air volume (VAV) system. A stratified lumped thermal model (multi-zone model) is suggested to predict local thermal response of an air-conditioned space. The effects of various thermal parameters such as the cooling system capacity, the thermal mass of air-conditioned space, the time delay of thermal effect, and the building envelope heat transmission are investigated in detail. Further, the influence of control parameters, PI control factor and the sensor location on a VAV system is quantitatively delineated. The results obtained show that the previous homogeneous lumped thermal model (1-zone model) may predict a significantly different thermal response in the air-conditioned space according to the sensor location.
With the world-wide demand on the emission minimization, the needs on the diesel aftertreatment devices with high efficiency are also increasing. In order to effectively develop or design a high-performance diesel particulate filter, a clear understanding on the deposition and regeneration mechanism is required. In the present study, a theory on the lumped parameter model for wall-flow type diesel particulate filters is described focusing on the deposition efficiency, pressure drop inside the filter. The fourth order explicit Runge-Kutta method is utilized for the mass flow rate computation. Engine operation modes with controlled and uncontrolled regeneration options are selected. The computational lumped parameter model is validated by comparing the computed results with the measured data.
In this paper. the lumped electrical circuit approach of mass/spring system is used to model the mechanical aspects according to the frequency. Therefore, the mass/spring system can be dealt with here and linked with the equivalent circuit of electric linear oscillatory actuator(LOA). Analysis models are double-coil type linear compressor for stirling refrigerator. The compressor consists of the moving coil LOA, piston, and spring. The electro-mechanical system with mass and spring can be represented using the lumped electrical circuit. We present the system impedance and dynamics of moving coil linear compressor.

The earthquake-resistant structural systems have to ensure the sufficient stiffness and ductility for the stability. For those purposes, recently, the performance design concept to increase the degree of absorbed energy level of structures has been proposed. One practical way of the performance design in the spatial structures is to apply the isolation system to boundary parts of roof system and sub-structure to obtain the target performance. So, it is necessary to examine the characteristics of dynamic behavior of spatial structures governed by higher modes rather than lower modes different from the cases of high rise buildings. The objectives of this paper are to develop the equivalent lumped mass model to simplify the analytical processes and to investigate the dynamic behavior of roof system according to the mass and the stiffness of sub-structures as a fundamental study of performance design for the spatial structures.
