Transient EHL Analysis on Spur Gear Teeth with Consideration of Gear Kinematics

  • Transient 3-dimensional elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) analysis is performed on the contacting teeth surfaces of involute spur gears. Kinematics of the gear and the pinion are taken into account to get accurate geometric clearance around the EHL region of the contacting teeth. The surface pressure and film thickness distribution for the whole contact faces in a lubricated condition at several time steps are obtained through the analysis. Besides the pressure spike at the outlet region, a representative phenomenon in EHL regime, the pressure at the inlet region is slightly higher than that of the center region. The film thickness of transient condition is thicker than that of steady condition.

  • Measurement of the friction force of vane tip have been made to provide essential information for the study of the pump dynamics, the pump design and the analysis of triboligical problems in the sliding components. The influences of the radial load, rotating speed and frequency of vane on the friction forces of vane tip have been investigated. The results indicated that the friction coefficient of vane tip are affected by the rotating speed remarkably but the effect of acting load on the vane tip and frequency of load are very small. The stribecks diagram shows that the lubrication regime of the sliding point of vane tip is mixing lubrication.

  • In this paper, thermohydrodynamic characteristics of large tilting pad journal bearings which have $3\~8$ tilting pads were numerically analyzed. The turbulent lubrication equation and the energy equation were solved. The regime of operation of this bearing is laminar, turbulent and transitional. Also viscosity of working fluid was considered as function of only temperature and inlet pressure build-up was considered. Numerical results for a large tilting pad journal bearing showed pressure distribution, temperature distribution, eccentricity ratio, and friction torque. The effects of pad number on the static performances of a large tilting pad journal bearing are discussed.

Shear Thinning Effects by VII Added Lubricant with In-Situ Optical Viscometer

  • Viscosity index improver (VII) is one of the major additives to the modern multigrade lubricants for the viscosity stability against temperature rise. However, it causes shear thinning effects which make the film thickness lessened very delicately at high shear rate $(over\;10^5\;s^{-1})$ of general EHL contact regime. In order to exactly verify the VII's performance of viscosity stability at such high shear rate, it is necessary to make the measurement of EHL film thickness down to $\~100nm$ with fine resolution for the preliminary study of viscosity control. In this work, EHL film thickness of VII added lubricant is measured with the resolution of $\~5nm$, which will give very informative design tool for the synthesis of lubricants regarding the matter of load carrying capacity at high shear rate condition.

Numerical results for a large tilting pad journal bearing showed journal center, maximum temperature, maximum pressure, friction torque. The relationship of bearing response and seismic intensity are discussed.

Monochromatic Image Analysis of Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication Film Thickness by Fringe Intensity Computation

  • Point contact film thickness in elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) is analyzed by image processing method for the images from an optical interferometer with monochromatic incident light. Interference between the reflected lights both on half mirror Cr coating of glass disk and on super finished ball makes circular fringes depending on the contact conditions such as sliding velocity, applied load, viscosity-pressure characteristics and viscosity of lubricant under ambient pressure. In this situation the film thickness is regarded as the difference of optical paths between those reflected lights, which make dark and bright fringes with monochromatic incident light. The film thickness is computed by numbering the dark and bright fringe orders and the intensity (gray scale image) in each fringe regime is mapped to the corresponding film thickness. In this work, we developed a measuring technique for EHL film thickness by dividing the image patterns into two typical types under the condition of monochromatic incident light. During the image processing, the captured image is converted into digitally formatted data over the contact area without any loss of the image information of interferogram and it is also interpreted with consistency regardless of the observer's experimental experience. It is expected that the developed image processing method will provide a valuable basis to develop the image processing technique for color fringes, which is generally used for the measurement of relatively thin films in higher resolution.

  • Chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) process was studied in terms of tribology in this paper. CMP performed by the down force and the relative motion of pad and wafer with slurry is typically tribological system composed of friction, wear and lubrication. The piezoelectric quartz sensor for friction force measurement was installed and the friction force was detected during CMP process. Various friction signals were attained and analyzed with the kind of pad, abrasive and abrasive concentration. As a result of experiment, the lubrication regime is classified with ηv/p(η, v and p; the viscosity, relative velocity and pressure). The characteristics of friction and material removal mechanism is also different as a function of the kind of abrasive and the abrasive concentration in slurry. Especially, the material removal per unit distance is directly proportional to the friction force and the non~uniformity has relation to the coefficient of friction.

  • This application study of a swash-plate type axial piston pump was concerned about the lubrication characteristics between cylinder barrel and valve plate which are the main rotating body and its opposite sliding part respectively. A computer simulation was implemented to assess bearing and sealing functions of the fluid film between cylinder barrel and valve plate. A numerical algorithm was developed to facilitate simultaneous calculations of dynamic cylinder pressure, 3 degree-of-freedom barrel motions considering inertia effect, and fluid film pressure assuming full fluid film lubrication regime. Central clearance, tilt angle, and azimuth angle of the rotating body were calculated for each time step. Surface waviness was found to be an influential factor due to the small fluid film thickness which can appear in flat land bearings. Five surface lays which can form on the lubrication surface in accordance with machining process were defined and analyzed using the simulation tool. Oil leakage flow and frictional torque in the fluid film between cylinder barrel and valve plate were also calculated to discuss in the viewpoint of energy loss. The simulation results showed that in actual sliding conditions proper surface non-flatness can make a positive effect on the energy efficiency and reliability of the thrust bearing.

Characteristic of Friction on Texturing Bearing Steel with Ultrasonic Hole Machine

  • We carry out experiments to characterize textured bearing steel with varying hole density and depth. Textured surface is believed to reduce the friction coefficient, and improve performance and wearing caused by third-body contact. We employ three lubrication regime conditions based on the Stribeck curve: boundary lubrication, mixed lubrication, and hydrodynamic lubrication. Ultrasonic machining is an untraditional machining method wherein abrasive grit particles are used. The hammering process on the work piece surface by abrasive provides the desired form. In this study, we create multi-holes on the bearing steel surface for texturing purposes. Holes are formed by an ultrasonic machine with a diameter of 0.534 mm and a depth of about 2-4 mm, and they are distributed on the contact surface with a density between 1.37-2.23%. The hole density over the surface area is an important factor affecting the friction. We test nine types of textured specimens using four times replication and compare them with the untextured specimen using graphs, as well as photographs taken using a scanning electron microscope. We use Analyzes variant in this experiment to find the correlation between each pair of treatments. Finally, we report the effect of hole density and depth on the friction coefficient.

그루브를 가진 함유소결베어링의 마찰 및 전기적 특성 (Friction and Electrical Characteristics of Oil-impregnated Sintered-Metal Bearing with Grooves)

  • The electrical and frictional properties of new sintered-metal bearing (S-bearing) with varying loads and speeds were measured. Also those were compared with the same products(J-bearing) made in Japan and the conventionally used ball bearing. The test results show that the frictional values of S-bearing are less than those of J-bearing, and that S-bearing operates in full-hydrodynamic lubrication regime. The values of rating current, starting time and jitter reveal that S-bearing is superior to J-bearing as well as ball bearing.
