춘계 금강 하구에서 혼합영양 섬모류인 Myrionecta rubra (=Mesodinium rubrum) 개체군의 단주기 변동 (Semiweekly Variation of Spring Population of a Mixotrophic Ciliate Myrionecta rubra (=Mesodinium rubrum) in Keum River Estuary, Korea)

  • Myrionecta rubra, a mixotrophic ciliate, is a cosmopolitan red tide species which is commonly found in neritic and estuarine waters. M. rubra had long been listed as an “nculturable protist”until 2 different laboratory strains were finally established in 2 research groups at the beginning of this century, enabling us to perform initiative investigation into various aspect of the live M. rubra strains (Gustafson et al. 2000; Yih et al. 2004b; Johnson and Stoecker 2005). Field sampling was carried out on high tide at 2 fixed stations around Kunsan Inner Harbor (St.1 near the Estuarine Weir and St.2 off Kunsan Ferry Station) every other day for 4 months from mid-February 2004 to understand detailed figure of the recurrent spring blooms of M. rubra following the onset of the water gates operation of the Keum River Estuarine Weir on August 1994. With its maximum abundance of 272 cells mL$^{-1}$ in St.1, fluctuation pattern of the M. rubra population at the 2 stations was strikingly similar. Notable growth of M. rubra population started on late April, to cause M. rubra red tides during one month from mid-May in which “xceptionally low salinity days”without its red tide were intermittently inserted. High abundance of M. rubra over 50 cells mL$^{-1}$ was recorded at samples with their water temperature and salinity higher than 15${^{\circ}C}$ and 4.0 psu, respectively. During pre-bloom period when salinity fluctuation is moderate and the water temperature is cooler than 15°C, Skeletonema costatum, a chain-forming centric diatom, was most dominant. Cyanobacterial species such as Aphanizomenon flos-aquae and Phormidium sp. replaced other dominant phytoplankters on the days with “xceptionally low salinity”even during the main blooming period of M. rubra. To summarize, M. rubra could form spring blooms in Keum River Estuary when the level of salinity fluctuation was more severe than that for the dominant diatom Skeletonema costatum and milder than that for the predominance by freshwater cyanobacteria. Therefore, optimal control of the scale and frequency of freshwater discharges might lead us to partially modify the fluctuation pattern of M. rubra populations as well as the period of spring blooms by M. rubra in Keum River Estuary. Sampling time interval of 2 days for the present study or daily sampling was concluded to be minimally required for the detailed exploration into the spring blooms by M. rubra populations in estuaries with weirs like Keum River Estuary.

  • 1984년 5월과 10월, 2회에 걸쳐 동해 서남 해역에서 조사한 수온, 클로로필-a, 영양염, 식물플랑크톤 및 일차생산에 관한 자료를 토대로 하여 대산 수역의 phytohydrography를 논의하였다. 식물플랑크톤의 종별 양적분포로 부터 특성 해수의 이전 환경을 추측할 수 있었는데, 이는 해양물리${\cdot}$화학적인 자료만으로는 기대하기 어려운 결과였다. 울기 및 감포 부근 해역의 상층부에서는, 그 하층에 근접한 냉수로 부터 영양염을 공급받아, 높은 일차생산력, 높은 클로로필-a 및 낮은 미세플랑크톤 비율 등의 특징이 나타났다. 반면에 대마난류수에는 매우 낮은 일차생산력, 빈약한 현존량 및 극히 높은 미세플랑크톤 비율 등의 특징이 나타나 좋은 대조를 이루었다. 연구해역에서 식물플랑크톤의 세포수 뿐만 아니라 클로로필-a 및 일차생산량에서도 미세플랑크톤이 압도적으로 우세함을 확인하였다. 이는 한반도 전해역 가운데 난류수가 예외적으로 강하게 유입되는 연구해역의 생물해양학적 특성을 잘 반영해 주는 현상이다.

Thermal Stability of Photo-produced H3O+ in the Photolyzed Water-ice Film

  • Hyperthermal ion scattering experiments were conducted with low kinetic energy (<35 eV) cesium ion beams to analyze the UV-photolyzed water-ice films. Neutral molecules (X) on the surface were detected as cesium-molecule ion clusters ($CsX^+$) which were formed through a Reactive Ion Scattering (RIS) process. Ionic species on the surface were desorbed from the surface via a low energy sputtering (LES) process, and were analyzed [1]. Using these methods, the thermal stability of hydronium ion ($H_3O^+$) that was produced by UV light was examined. As the thermal stability of $H_3O^+$ is related with the reaction, $H_3O^+$ + OH + $e^-$ (or $OH^-$) ${\rightarrow}$ $2H_2O$, which is similar or same with the reverse reaction of the auto-ionization of water, the result from this work would be helpful to understand the auto-ionization of $H_2O$ in water-ice that has not been well-understood yet. However, as $H_3O^+$ was not detected through a LES method, the titration experiment of $H_3O^+$ with methylamine ($CH_3NH_2$, MA), MA + $H_3O^+\;{\rightarrow}\;MAH^+$ + $H_2O$, was conducted. In this case, the presence of $MAH^+$ indicates that of $H_3O^+$ in the ice. Thus the pristine ice was photolyzed with UV light for a few minutes and this photolyzed ice was remained at the certain temperature for minutes without UV light. Then MA was adsorbed on that surface so that the population of $H_3O^+$ was found. From the calibration experiments, the relation of $MAH^+$ and $H_3O^+$ was found, so that the thermal stability of $H_3O^+$ can be investigated [2].

서해 남부, 고창연안해역의 해양환경 및 식물플랑크톤 군집의 시·공간 변동특성 (Spatio-temporal Variations of Marine Environments and Phytoplankton Community in the Gochang Coastal Waters (GCW) of Southern West Sea in Korea)

  • 고창 연안해역의 해양환경 및 식물플랑크톤 군집의 시·공간적 변동 특성을 파악하기 위해 2016년 여름에서 2017년 봄까지 4계절 16개 정점을 조사하였다. 분석 결과, 수온은 표층에서 2.1℃에서 34.5℃의 범위로 큰 계절 변화를 보였지만, 염분은 표층에서 31.14 psu에서 32.64 psu의 범위로, 계절 변화가 크지 않아, 연안해역 수형은 수온에 지배되었다. Chl-a 역시 봄 최솟값 0.58 ㎍ L-1에서 여름 최댓값 10.5 ㎍L-1의 범위로 겨울에 높고, 가을과 봄에 낮았고, 큰 계절 변화를 보였다. 식물플랑크톤 군집은 53속 86종으로 단순하였다. 표층 현존량은 가을 최솟값 2.2 cells mL-1에서 여름 최댓값 689.2 cells mL-1의 변화 폭으로 여름에 높고, 가을에 낮았으나, 가을은 다른 계절보다 한 자릿수가 이상 낮았다. 우점종은 연중 규조류에 지배되어, 표층은 여름이 Leptocylindrus danicus, Chaetoceros curvisetus Skeletonema costatum-ls, 가을은 Paralia sulcata, Eucampia zodiacus, 겨울은 S. costatum-ls, Thalasiosira nordenskioeldii, 그리고 봄은 S. costatum-ls, Asterionella glacialis가 우점하였다. 즉 고창 연안해역의 식물플랑크톤 군집은 다양성이 높지만, 연중 특정 종에 크게 지배되는 군집구조를 나타내었다. 주성분 분석 결과 고창 연안해역은 낮은 수심으로 복사열에 의해 쉽게 가열 및 냉각되며, 조석혼합 등 해수 혼합 특성으로 표층퇴적물의 재부유에 의한 영양염 공급으로 식물플랑크톤 시·공간 분포가 결정되었다.

Study on Growth Characteristics of Sargassum fulvellum in the Integrated Multi-trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) System

  • An eco-friendly integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) farming technique was developed with the goal of resolving eutrophication by excess feed and feces as fish-farming by-products. A variety of seaweed species were tried to remove inorganic nutrients produced by fish farming. However, there have been few trials to use Sargassum fulvellum in an IMTA system, a species with a relatively wide distribution across regions with various habitat conditions, great nutrient removal efficiency and importance for human food source and industrial purposes. In this regard, our study tried to examine feasibility of using S. fulvellum in an IMTA system by analyzing growth characteristics of the species in an IMTA system comprising of rockfish (Sebastes shlegeli), sea cucumber (Stichopus japonocus) and the tried S. fulvellum (October 2011 - November 2012). We also monitored environment conditions around the system including current speed, water temperature and inorganic nutrient level as they may affect growth of S. fulvellum. S. fulvellum in the IMTA system, which were $15.72{\pm}5.67mm$ long at the start of the experiment in October 2011, grew to a maximum of $1093{\pm}271.13mm$ by May 2012. In September, seaweed growth was reduced to a minimum of $280{\pm}70.43mm$ in length. Then, S. fulvellum began to grow again reaching $325{\pm}196.19mm$ by November 2012. Wet weight of the seaweed was $4.01{\pm}1.89g$ at the start of the experiment and reached a maximum of $109.26{\pm}34.23g$ in May. The weight gradually declined to a low of $15.12{\pm}8.40g$ in September 2012. Weight began to increase once more, rising to $39.27{\pm}21.69g$ by November. During the experiment, the average velocity at the surface and the bottom was 6.5 cm/s and 3.4 cm/s, respectively. The water temperature ranged $5.0-23.5^{\circ}C$, which was considered suitable for growing S. fulvellum. Results of the study indicated no significant differences in inorganic nutrients between pre- and post-IMTA installation. It was thus concluded that S. fulvellum can be a suitable seaweed species to be used in an IMTA system.

한국 남해에서 분리한 와편모조류 Alexandrium affine의 생장에 미치는 수온, 염분 그리고 광량의 영향 (The Effect of Temperature, Salinity and Irradiance on the Growth of Alexandrium affine (Dinophyceae) Isolated from Southern Sea of Korea)

  • 와편모조류 Alexandrium affine의 생장에 대한 수온, 염분 및 광 조건 실내실험을 통해서 살펴보았다. A. affine의 최대성장속도($0.69day^{-1}$)는 수온 $25^{\circ}C$, 염분 25 psu로 나타났으며, 최적생장(최대성장속도의 80 %)은 수온 $20{\sim}25^{\circ}C$의 염분은 20 ~ 35 psu로 나타났다. 따라서 A. affine는 비교적 협온성이며, 광염성의 생리학적 특성을 가지고 있는 것으로 생각된다. 광량에 따른 생장 실험결과에서 유도된 생장식은 ${\mu}=0.75(I-4.25)/(I+65.47)$로, 보상광량($I_c$)은 $4.25{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$, 반포화광량($K_I$)은 $57.0{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$로 나타났다. 결론적으로 A. affine는 하계에 낮은 광, 염분의 변동 폭이 큰 연안해역에서도 우점화 할 수 있는 유리한 생리적 특성을 보이는 것으로 판단된다.

Seasonal variation of Attached Diatoms community in the Hantan River

  • This study was investigated to the seasonal variation of attached diatoms communities in the Hantan River in November 2001, February, Ma and August 2002. It was identified the total 107 taxa which were composed of 95 species, 11 varieties and 1 unidentified speCies. The standing crops ranged 298,5004,776,000cells${\cdot}cm^{-2}.$and showed marked irregularly seasonal variations. It was higher value at the lower station than the upper station in fall. But it was similar values from the upper to the lower station by the effect of typhoon in summer. Chlorophyll concentrations ranged $13.4~304.2{\mu}m{\cdot}cm^{-2}.$ Standing crops and chlorophyll showed similar trends during investigation. Low diversity index values probably indicated the effects of envi~onmental stresses(water temperature, flow and current velocity) other than organic pollution. An assessment of organic pollution using epilithic diatoms(DAlpo) was $\alpha$-oligosaprobic states at the upper and mid stations, and was $\alpha$-mesosaprobic states at the lower stations.

Flow-Accelerated Corrosion Behavior of SA106 Gr.C Steel in Alkaline Solution Characterized by Rotating Cylinder Electrode

  • Flow-Accelerated Corrosion Behavior of SA106 Gr.C steel in room temperature alkaline solution simulating the CANDU primary water condition was studied using Rotating Cylinder Electrode. Systems of RCE were set up and electrochemical parameters were applied at various rotating speeds. Corrosion current density decreased up to pH 10.4 then it increased rapidly at higher pH. This is due to the increasing tendency of cathodic and anodic exchange half-cell current. Corrosion potential shifted slightly upward with rotating velocity. Passive film was formed from pH 9.8 by the mechanism of step oxidation and the subsequent precipitation of ferrous species into hydroxyl compound. Above pH 10.4, the film formation process was active and the film became stable. Corrosion current density showed increment in pH 6.98 with the rotating velocity, while it soon saturated from 1000 rpm above pH 9.8. This seems that activation process which represents formation of passive film on the bare metal surface controls the entire corrosion process

이른 여름 동중국해 대륙사면의 해양환경과 소형 식물플랑크톤 군집의 연직분포 특성 (Vertical Profiles of Marine Environments and Micro-phytoplankton Community in the Continental Slope Area of the East China Sea in Early Summer 2009)

  • 2009년 이른 여름 동중국해 동부의 대륙사면을 대상으로 해양환경과 소형 식물플랑크톤 군집을 조사하였다. 수온약층은 뚜렷하지 않고 수심에 따라 완만하게 감소하였다, 염분은 표층에서 낮고 비교적 깊은 수심까지 균일한 분포를 보이나, 중간 수층이하에서는 수심과 비례하여 150~200 m에서 최댓값을 보인 다음 감소하였으나, 변화 폭은 크지 않았다. sigma-t의 변화는 수온에 의해 지배되어, 표층에서 수심과 함께 완만히 증가하여 약 500 m에서 표층보다 약 3 $kg/m^3$ 높은 값을 나타내었다. 광량은 해수 표층에서 급격히 감소하여, 보상심도는 약 100 m 수심에 위치하였다. 엽록소 a의 연직분포는 수온이나 염분보다 광량에 더욱 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났으며, 보상심도에서 최댓값을 나타내었다. 소형 식물플랑크톤 군집은 56속 103종으로 비교적 다양하였고, 세포밀도 역시 엽록소 a가 최댓값을 나타내는 수심에서 112.0~470.0 cells/L로 가장 높게 나타났다. 우점종에서 극우점하는 종은 없고, 낮은 점유율로 다양한 종이 출현하지만, 일부 정점에서 규질편모조류인 Octactis octonaria나 규조류인 Leptocylindrus mediterraneus에 의해 26%의 우점율은 나타내는 것은 이례적이다. 본 연구의 결과는 개방된 빈영양 해역의 식물플랑크톤 등 미소생물의 군집 해석은 표층, 중층 및 저층과 같은 일정 수심 간격의 조사가 아닌, 해양환경의 연직분포나 엽록소 최대층의 파악과 같은 연속관측의 결과와 연계된 생태연구가 필수적임을 지적하고 있다.

Removal Efficiency of the Heavy Metals Zn(II), Pb(II) and Cd(II) by Saprolegnia delica and Trichoderma viride at Different pH Values and Temperature Degrees

  • The removal efficiency of the heavy metals Zn, Pb and Cd by the zoosporic fungal species Saprolegnia delica and the terrestrial fungus Trichoderma viride, isolated from polluted water drainages in the Delta of Nile in Egypt, as affected by various ranges of pH values and different temperature degrees, was extensively investigated. The maximum removal efficiency of S. delica for Zn(II) and Cd(II) was obtained at pH 8 and for Pb(II) was at pH 6 whilst the removal efficiency of T. viride was found to be optimum at pH 6 for the three applied heavy metals. Regardless the median lethal doses of the three heavy metals, Zn recorded the highest bioaccumulation potency by S. delica at all pH values except at pH 4, followed by Pb whereas Cd showed the lowest removal potency by the fungal species and vice versa in case of T. viride. The optimum bio-mass dry weight production by S. delica was found when the fungus was grown in the medium treated with the heavy metal Pb at pH 6, followed by Zn at pH 8 and Cd at pH 8. The optimum biomass dry weight yield by T. viride amended with Zn, Pb and Cd was obtained at pH 6 for the three heavy metals with the maximum value at Zn. The highest yield of biomass dry weight was found when T. viride treated with Cd at all different pH values followed by Pb whilst Zn output was the lowest and this result was reversed in case of S. delica. The maximum removal efficiency and the biomass dry weight production for the three tested heavy metals was obtained at the incubation temperature $20^{\circ}C$ in case of S. delica while it was $25^{\circ}C$ for T. viride. Incubation of T. viride at higher temperatures ($30^{\circ}C\;and\;35^{\circ}C$) enhanced the removal efficiency of Pb and Cd than low temperatures ($15^{\circ}C\;and\;20^{\circ}C$) and vice versa in case of Zn removal. At all tested incubation temperatures, the maximum yield of biomass dry weight was attained at Zn treatment by the two tested fungal species. The bioaccumulation potency of S. delica for Zn was higher than that for Pb at all temperature degrees of incubation and Cd bioaccumulation was the lowest whereas T. viride showed the highest removal efficiency for Pb followed by Cd and Zn was the minor of the heavy metals.
