  • For the construction of PC bridge piers the implementation of 1992 seismic provisions, longitudinal steels were practically lap-spliced in the plastic hinge region. Experimental investigation was conducted ductility of evaluate the seismic earthquake-experienced reinforced concrete columns with 2,5 aspect ratio. Six test specimens were mode with test parameters: confinement ratios, lap splices, and retrofitting FRP materials. They were damaged under series of artificial earthquakes that could be compatible in Korean peninsula. Directly after the pseudo-dynamic test, damaged columns were retested under inelastic reversal cyclic loading simultaneously under a constant axial load, P=0.1f$\_$ck/A$\_$g/. Residual seismic performance of damaged columns was evaluated and compared to that of the corresponding original columns. Test results show that PC bridge piers with lap-spliced longitudinal steels appeared to fail at low ductility. This was due to the debonding of the lap splice, which resulted from insufficient development of the longitudinal steels. The specimens externally wrapped with composite FRP straps in the potential plastic hinge region indicated significant improvement both in flexural strength and displacement ductility.

  • A laboratory investigation was conducted wherein smooth, rounded, siliceous river gravel aggregates were coated with fine-grained polyethylene, carpet co-product, or cement + styrene butadiene rubber latex and used to prepare hot mix asphalt concrete specimens. Only the coarse (+ No.4) aggregates were coated. The concept was that the coatings would enhance surface roughness of the aggregates and, thus, produce asphalt mixtures with superior engineering properties. Hot mix asphalt specimens were prepared and evaluated using several standard and non-standard test procedures. Based on experiences during the coating processes and analyses of these limited test results, the following was concluded: All three aggregate coating materials increased Hveem and Marshall stability, tensile strength, and resilient modulus(stiffness). These findings are indicative of improved resistance to rutting and cracking in hot mix asphalt pavements prepared using coated gravel aggregates in comparison to similar uncoated gravel aggregates.

  • For the design of composite bridge piers, detail requirements for the reinforcements is not clear to satisfy the required seismic performance. Composite bridge piers were suggested to reduce the sectional dimensions and to enhance the ductility of the columns under earthquake loadings. In this paper, five specimens of concrete encased composite columns of 400mm diameter with single core steel were fabricated to investigate the seismic performance of the composite columns. Shaking table tests and a Pseudo-Dynamic test were carried out and structural behavior of small-scaled models considering near-fault motions was evaluated. Test parameters were the pace of the transverse reinforcement, lap splice of longitudinal reinforcement and encased steel member sections. The displacement ductility from shaking table tests was lower than that from the pseudo-dynamic test. Limited ductile design and 50% lap splice of longitudinal reinforcement reduced the displacement ductility. Steel ratio showed significant effect on the ultimate strength. Lap splice and low transverse reinforcements reduced the displacement capacity. The energy dissipation capacity of composite columns did not show significant difference according to details.

  • Geosynthetic reinforced earth wall was introduced about 20 years ago and many structures have been constructed. Especially, segmental concrete panel facing and friction tie system are the most popular system in Korea, and this friction tie was composed of high tenacity PET filament and LDPE(Low Density Polyethylene) sheath. Due to the lack of direct-test results, design coefficients of friction tie (creep reduction factor) had been determined by quoting the previous and the foreign reference data. This is an unreasonable fact for the use of friction ties. In this study, the creep tests were performed to evaluate the creep behavior of friction tie, and the reduction factor of creep was calculated for the correct design of geosynthetic reinforced earth retaining walls. From the test results, finally it was found that the allowable creep strength of friction tie is 60% of Tult during service life, and creep reduction factor is 1.67 for each grade of friction ties.

  • Various non-seismic tie details are frequently used for one- and two-story small buildings because the seismic demand on their deformation capacities is not relatively significant. To evaluate the effects of the non-seismic tie details on the seismic performance of reinforced concrete columns, six square columns with a cross section of $400{\times}400mm$ and six rectangular columns with a cross section of $250{\times}640mm$ were tested. The anchorage details at both ends and spacing of tie hoops, along with the cross-sectional shape and the magnitude of axial load, were considered as the primary test parameters. Test results showed that square columns had higher stiffness and lower lateral deformation rather than rectangular columns. Both lap spliced tie and U-shaped tie provided comparable or improved seismic performance to $90^{\circ}$ hook tie in terms of maximum strength, ductility, and energy dissipation. The predicted curves with modeling parameters in ASCE41-13 were conservative for test results of lap spliced tie and U-shaped tie specimens since plastic behavior after flexural yielding could not be considered. For economical design, ASCE41-13 should be revised with various test results of tie details.

  • This is an experiment to complement new ways of using concentrated water discharged from the seawater desalination plant. In this study, metakaolin, which has excellent chloride ion immobilization effect, was used as the main binder, and 10% and 20% of calcium oxide were substituted with the activator. In addition, tap-water(TW) and reverse osmosis brine water(RW) were used as mixed water. As a result of the experiment, the mixture using RW showed higher compressive strength than TW. It also showed low water absorption and high density. In the mixture using RW as mixed water, a hydration reaction substance called Friedel's salt could be observed. Considering the corrosion problem of steel, RW is considered to be applicable to products such as non-reinforced concrete, brick, and curb stone. Through this study, it is thought that it is meaningful to propose a new application method other than the ocean release of RW.

  • Fine aggregate made of ferronickel slag(FNS) is similar to natural fine aggregates and is used in concrete structures both domestically and abroad, but its applications and research areas are limited. In this research, in order to expand the availability of FNS and improve the performance of cement mortar products, the applicability of FNS on dry mortar for floor was examined. Experimental results show that FNS improves flow of cement mortar because it has low absorption rate, spherical shape, and glassy surface. Also, the high stiffness of the FNS aggregate itself is considered to contribute to the improvement of cement mortar quality such as crack reduction by improving the compressive strength and shrinkage reducing. In addition, when FNS fine aggregate is applied, it was possible to secure the impact sound insulation performance equal to or higher than that of mortar using natural fine aggregate.

  • Aluminosilicate materials as precursors are heterogenous in nature, consisting of inert and partially reactive portion, and have varying proportions depending upon source materials. It is essential to assess the reactivity of precursor prior to synthesize geopolymers. Moreover, reactivity may act as decisive factor for setting molar concentration of NaOH, curing temperature and setting proportion of different precursors. In this experimental work, the reactivities of two precursors, low calcium (fly ash (FA)) and high calcium (ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS)), were assessed through the dissolution of aluminosilicate at (i) three molar concentrations (8, 12, and 16 M) of NaOH solution, (ii) 6 to 24 h dissolution time, and (iii) 20-100℃. Based on paratermeters influencing the reactivity, different proportions of ternary binders (two precursors and ordinary cement) were activated by the combined NaOH and Na2SiO3 solutions with two alkaline activators to precursor ratios, to synthesize the geopolymer. Reactivity results revealed that GGBS was 20-30% more reactive than FA at 20℃, at all three molar concentrations, but its reactivity decreased by 32-46% with increasing temperature due to the high calcium content. Setting time of geopolymer paste was reduced by adding GGBS due to its fast reactivity. Both GGBS and cement promoted the formation of all types of gels (i.e., C-S-H, C-A-S-H, and N-A-S-H). As a result, it was found that a specified mixing proportion could be used to improve the compressive strength over 30 MPa at both the ambient and hot curing conditions.

  • Casting Ultra High-Performance Concrete (UHPC) on an orthotropic steel deck and forming a composite action by connectors could improve the steel deck fatigue performance. This study presents the mechanical performance of a proposed post-combination connection between UHPC and steel, which had a low constraint effect on UHPC shrinkage. A total of 10 push-out tests were conducted for static and fatigue performance investigations. And the test results were compared with evaluation methods in codes to verify the latter's applicability. Meanwhile, nonlinear simulation and parametric works with material damage plasticity models were also conducted for the static and fatigue failure mechanism understanding. The static and fatigue test results both showed that fractures at stud roots and surrounding local UHPC crushes were the main failure appearances. Compared with normally arranged studs, group arrangement could result in reductions of static stud shear stiffness, strength, and fatigue lives, which were about 18%, 12%, and 27%, respectively. Compared with the test results, stud shear capacity and fatigue lives evaluations based on the codes of AASHTO, Eurocode 4, JSCE and JTG D64 could be applicable in general while the safety redundancies tended to be smaller or even insufficient for group studs. The analysis results showed that arranging studs in groups caused obviously uneven strain distributions. The severer stress concentration and larger strain ranges caused the static and fatigue performance degradations of group studs. The research outcome provides a very important basis for establishing a design method of connections in the novel post-combination steel-UHPC composite deck.

  • Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) has been developed to overcome the low tensile strengths and brittleness of conventional concrete. Considering that UHPC, owing to its composition and the use of steel fibers, develops a compressive strength of 180 MPa as well as high stiffness, the top flange of the steel girder may be superfluous in the composite beam combining a slab made of UHPC and the steel girder. In such composite beam, the steel girder takes the form of an inverted-T shaped structure without top flange in which the studs needed for the composition of the steel girder with the UHPC slab are disposed in the web of the steel girder. This study investigates experimentally and analytically the flexural behavior of this new type of composite beam to propose details like stud spacing and slab thickness for further design recommendations. To that goal, eight composite beams with varying stud spacing and slab thickness were fabricated and tested. The test results indicated that stud spacing running from 100 mm to 2 to 3 times the slab thickness can be recommended. In view of the relative characteristic slip limit of Eurocode-4, the results showed that the composite beam developed ductile behavior. Moreover, except for the members with thin slab and large stud spacing, most of the specimens exhibited results different to those predicted by AASHTO LRFD and Eurocode-4 because of the high performance developed by UHPC.
