  • A dimensional supply of petroleum fuels and increased competition for petroleum products has made the conservation of energy in grain drying an important cost and management factor. Research on solar grain drying is directed toward utilization of a renewable energy source as an alternative to petroleum fuels for drying. There are many technical and economic problems in accepting and adopting solor energy as a new energy source for grain drying. The purpose of this study are to assess the state of the art of solar grain drying and to find out the problems by reviewing literatures available. The results obtained may be summarized as follows; 1.It may be considered that the weather conditions in October of Korea was satisfactory for the forced natural air and solar heated air drying. 2. Solar energy is considered more applicable to low-temperature, In-storage drying systems than to high-temperature, high-speed drying systems. In-storage drying systems require low levels of heat input. The costs of collector systems to provide low temperature are considerably cheaper than for high-temperature systems. 3. Tubular type collector made of polyvinyle film seems to be the most practical at this stage of development and black-painted bare-plate collectors mounted on the outside of a typical, round, low-temperature drying bin can supply an appreciable amount of the energy efficiently needed for low-temperature grain drying at a lower cost. 4. All of the grains in solar drying tests was successfully dried up to safe storaged moisture levels without significant spoilage. Drying rates with solar system were faster than natural air drying systems, and usually a little slower than similar low-temperature electric drying systems. 5. Final grain moisture levels were lower in solar tests than in natural air tests, and generally higher than in tests with continuous heated air. 6. Savings of energy by use of solar collectors ranged from 23% to 55%, compared to the natural and electric ileated air drying systems. However, total drying cost effectiteness tvas not significant. Therefore, it is desirable that solar grain dry-ing sIFstems tvhich could be suitable for multiple heating purposes on farms shouldbe developed. 7. Supplemental heat with solar radiation did little to reduce air flow requirementsbut refuced drying time and increased the p\ulcornerobability of successful drying duringdrying poriod.

  • In order to prevent incoming solar radiation, it is necessary to study about blinds' blocking out effects of heat that are installed at the balcony at an apartment house. To figure out the heating effects from the windows, a study for indoor thermal environment according to the location of blinds is also needed. In order to find out the changes of indoor thermal environment, we'll compare models of a house building with or without Venetian blinds: one place has an extended living room removing a balcony and another one has a normal balcony. The result is as follows. Without blinds, the place with an extended living room has benefits for saving heat compare to the place with a normal balcony. It's because the warm air heated by the incoming solar radiation moves into the living room through convection current and radiation which causes an increase of the indoor temperature. At an extended living room, the temperature difference from outside and inside, when blinds were installed inside, was $1.9^{\circ}C$ while it was $0.6^{\circ}C$ when the blinds were installed at outside of the balcony. It is evaluated that setting up the blind outside prevents much heat. At the space with a normal balcony, installing blinds at living room windows can save much heat compare to installing blinds at windows at the balcony. The indoor temperature was low when blinds were installed. It can be said that blinds block heat from the incoming solar radiation. Moreover, when blinds are installed, there is a big change of indoor temperature due to the radiation from the blinds' slat and convective activities in between the blinds and windows. This also has to be considered.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the urban heat island ultimately by analyzing long-wave radiation which is the dominant factor of night minimum temperature formation. We observed during two months with four elements which is long and short wave radiation, temperature, relative humidity. And we analyzed the correlation between the four factors of long-wave radiation, temperature, cloud form, and cloud amount during the summer two months on the night time. Observations were carried out at two sites in Daegu and nearby. The results are as follows. (1) Long-wave radiation change per $1^{\circ}C$ in summer was larger than winter. (2) Long-wave radiation amount is affected by temperature change when the amount of cloud is small. (3) Low cloud was analyzed to have more influence on long-wave radiation than high cloud.

  • The purpose of this study was to predict road surface temperature using high-resolution solar radiation data. The road surface temperature prediction model (RSTPM) was applied to predict road surface temperature; this model was developed based on the heat-balance method. In addition, using SOLWEIG (SOlar and LongWave Environmental Irradiance Geometry-model), the shadow patterns caused by the terrain effects were analyzed, and high-resolution solar radiation data with 10 m spatial resolution were calculated. To increase the accuracy of the shadow patterns and solar radiation, the day that was modeled had minimal effects from fog, clouds, and precipitation. As a result, shadow areas lasted for a long time at the entrance and exit of a tunnel, and in a high-altitude area. Furthermore, solar radiation clearly decreased in areas affected by shadows, which was reflected in the predicted road surface temperatures. It was confirmed that the road surface temperature should be high at topographically open points and relatively low at higher altitude points. The results of this study could be used to forecast the freezing of sections of road surfaces in winter, and to inform decision making by road managers and drivers.

  • This study is focused on developing a software that predicts the temperature distribution and infrared Emission from 30 objects considering the solar radiation through the atmosphere. The solar radiation through the atmosphere is modeled by using the well-known LOWTRAN7 code. Surface temperature information is essential for generating the infrared scene of the object. Predictions of the transient surface temperature and the infrared emission from a naval ship by using the software developed here show fairly good results by representing the typical temperature and emitted radiance distributions expected for the naval ship considered in mid latitude. Emissivity of each material is appeared to be an important parameter for recognizing the target in Infrared band region. The numerical results also show that the low emissivity surface on the heat source can be helpful in reducing the IR image contrast as compared to the background sea.

  • Solar hot water system produces hot water using solar energy. If it is not used effectively, overheating occurs during the summer. Therefore, a lot of research is being done to solve this. This study develops thermoelectric power module applicable to solar hot water system. A thermoelectric material can directly convert thermal energy into electrical energy without additional power generation devices. If there is a temperature difference between high and low temperature, it generate power by Seebeck effect. The thermoelectric module generates electricity using temperature differences through the heat exchange of hot and cold water. The water used for cooling is heated and stored as hot water as it passes through the module. It can prevent overheating of Solar hot water system while producing power. The thermoelectric module consists of one absorption and two radiation part. There path is designed in the form of a water jacket. As a result, a temperature of the absorption part was $134.2^{\circ}C$ and the radiation part was $48.6^{\circ}C$. The temperature difference between the absorption and radiation was $85.6^{\circ}C$. Also, The Thermoelectric module produced about 122 W of irradiation at $708W/m^2$. At this time, power generation efficiency was 2.62% and hot water conversion efficiency was 62.46%.

  • Effects of irrigation control by time and integrated solar radiation on musknelon quality in perlite culture were investigated. Sugar content of melon flesh was high in the irrigation treatment at the following times 6:00, 8:00, 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 12:30, 13:00, 13:30, 14:00, 14:30, 15:00, 16:00, and 17:00(T-2), compared to the irrigation treatment at every hour from 6:00 to 18:00(T-1) within the irrigation experiment controlled by time. Within the irrigation experiment controlled by integrated solar radiation, sugar content was as high as 15.7(Brix$^{\circ}$) in the 240Wh.m$^{-2}$ , compared to the 180, the 200, and the 220Wh.m$^{-2}$ . Fruit firmness was low in T-2 within the Irrigation experiment by time and in the 220Wh.m$^{-2}$ within the irrigation experiment by integrated solar radiation. Fruit size was smaller in the treatment controlled by integrated solar radiation than by the time treatment. Fruit weight was the heaviest in T-1. The weight of the shoot except for the fruit was lower in treatment of irrigation by integrated solar radiation than by time. In conclusion it is suggested that the appropriate integrated solar radiation pet each irrigation cycle should be 180~20Wh.m$^{-2}$ in the early growing stage, and then gradually increased to 240Wh.m$^{-2}$ from net formation to harvest time.

  • Surface solar radiation over the sea is estimated using the visible and infrared spin scan radiometer (VISSR) data onboard Geostationary Meteorological Satellite(GMS)-5 from January 1997 to December 1997 in clear and cloudy conditions. The hourly insolation is estimated with a spatial resolution of $5km{\times}5km$ grid. The island pyranometer operated by the Japan Meteorological Agency(JMA) is used to validate the estimated insolation. The root mean square error of the hourly estimated insolation is $104W/m^2$ with 0.91 of the correlation coefficient. In the variability of the hourly solar radiation investigated around the Korean Peninsula, the maximum value of solar radiation is found in June at the Yellow Sea and the East Sea, while in August at the South Sea because of low pressure conditions and front in June.
