A Low-Profile DC-To-DC Converter for Sustain Driving Circuits of AC PDP Application Systems

  • The current paper presents the design and implementation of a low-profile dc-to-dc converter developed as a power supply for the sustain driving circuit inside large-area wall-mount ac PDP application systems. Details on the design and implementation of a 500 W prototype dc-to-dc converter, miniaturized within a 230 $mm{\times}130$ mm area with a thickness of 25 mm while still achieving a 95 % conversion efficiency, are presented to demonstrate the feasibility and application potentials of the proposed low-profile dc-to-dc converter.

  • The feasibility of a midgap metal gate is investigated for 32nm MOSFET low power applications. The midgap metal gate MOSFET is found to deliver a driving current as high as a bandedge gate one for the low power applications if a proper retrograde channel is used. An adequate design of the retrograde channel is essential to achieve the performance requirement given in ITRS roadmap. In addition, a process simulation is run using halo implants and thermal processes to evaluate the feasibility of the necessary retrograde profile in manufacturing environments. From the thermal budget point of view, the bandedge metal gate MOSFET is more vulnerable to the following thermal process than the midgap metal gate MOSFET since it requires a steeper retrograde doping profile. Based on the results, a guideline for the gate workfunction and the channel profile in the 32 nm MOSFET is proposed.

The Effects of Cirsium japonicum on Lipid Profile in Ovariectomized Rats

  • Cirsium japonicum water extracts has been used to treat vascular related diseases. We have previously reported that Cirsium japonicum extracts activated estrogen receptors. It is widely known that estrogen increases the high density lipoprotein cholesterol and decrease the low density lipoprotein cholesterol on the lipid profile. But effects of Cirsium japonicum on lipid profile are not reported yet. Therefore, we have studied the effects of Cirsium japonicum on the lipid content in ovariectomized rats. Thirty Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats of $210{\pm}20\;g$ were studied for 10 weeks. The rats were divided into five groups; (I) sham, no ovariectomized rats plus olive oil, (II) ovariectomized rats plus olive oil, (III) ovariectomized rats plus 0.5 mg/kg $17{\beta}$-estradiol (E2) in olive oil, (IV) ovariectomized rats plus 0.5 mg/kg Cirsium japonicum in olive oil, and (V) ovariectomized rats plus 5 mg/kg Cirsium japonicum in olive oil. Treatment with Cirsium japonicum or E2 induced significant reduction in total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol/total cholesterol, total cholesterol/high density lipoprotein cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol/high density lipoprotein cholesterol compared to control group as well as increase in uterine weight. However, changes in triglycerides levels were different. Our results suggest that Cirsium japonicum is functionally similar to E2 in vivo as well as in vitro.

Significant Association of Metabolic Indices, Lipid Profile, and Androgen Levels with Prostate Cancer

  • Objectives: To compare the metabolic indices, lipid profile, androgens, and prostate specific antigen between prostate cancer and BPH and between grades of prostate cancer in a cross-sectional study. Materials and Methods: The study enrolled 95 cases of prostate cancer and 95 cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Prostate gland volume was measured using transrectal ultrasound. We compared insulin, testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, prostate specific antigen levels and lipid profile between prostate cancer of different grades and BPH. Further, prostate cancer patients were classified into low grade and high grade. Unpaired t-test for normally distributed variables and Man-Whitney U test for non-normal variables were used to assess differences. Results: We found that prostate cancer patients had significantly higher levels of insulin, testosterone, PSA, cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) in comparison to their BPH counterparts. Higher levels of these parameters also correlated with a higher grade of the disease. Conclusions: We conclude that higher levels of insulin, testosterone, PSA, and cholesterol correlate with a higher risk of prostate cancer, and also with a higher grade of the disease.

중복판막치환에서 이오네스큐 단고형 판막의 내구성 (Durability ofthe low-profile Ionescu-Shiley valve in mitral and aortic position)

  • Improved clinical performance was expected from the introduction of the low-profile model of the Ionescu-Shiley pericardial valve. The long-term clinical results were assessed on the consecutive 47 patients who underwent MVR + AVR with this valve between 1984 and 1988. Three patients died within 30 days of surgery[operative mortality, 6.4%], and 44 early survivors were followed up for a total of 203.8 patient-years [Mean + SD, 4.63 + 1.47 years]. One died during the follow-up with a linearized late mortality of 0.491%/patient~year[pt-yr]. None experienced thromboembolism. Bleeding and endocardiris were seen in each single patient with the incidences of complication of 0.491%/pt-yr respectively. The linearized rate of primary tissue failure [PTF] was 0.491%/pt-yr. The actuarial survival and rate of freedom from PTF were 97.6 _+ 2.4% and 92.6 +7.1% at 7 years of follow-up.These results are favorably comparable with the ones seen in the patients of MVR + AVR with the standard profile lonescu-Shiley valve in all respects except the higher mean age of the low-profile group. Although the clinical performance was compatible with other major reports, the durability of the valve remains to be proved with the prolonged follow-up.

  • Recently, distribution load analysis using AMR (Automatic Meter Reading) data is researched in electric utilities. Load analysis method based on AMR system generates the typical load profile using load data of AMR customers, estimates the load profile of non-AMR customers, and analyzes the peak load and load profile of the distribution circuits and sectors per every 15 minutes/hour/day/week/month. Typical load profile is generated by the algorithm calculating the average amount of power consumption of each groups having similar load patterns. Traditional customer clustering mechanism uses only contract type code as a key. This mechanism has low accuracy because many customers having same contract code have different load patterns. In this research, We propose a customer clustring mechanism using k-means algorithm with contract type code and AMR data.

  • This paper describes the calculation and application of the speed profile for the train speed control when the train is operated by ATO(Automatic Train Operation). We propose a speed profile calculation method considering the speed limitation and the jerk limitation, in order to maintain the quality of the train automatic operation. In previous works, ATO calculates a desired speed profile along the time, and controls the train to follow the profile. In this case, it may be hard to follow the restrictive speed along the location or to stop the train with a low location error, because of the difference between the desired location at each time and the real location of the train due to the control error. In the proposed method in this paper, we calculate a desired speed profile along the time considering the speed and jerk limitation first, and derive a speed profile along the location using it. If the restrictive speed profile is changed or the train speed strayed from the speed profile, ATO system calculates new speed profile and applies it immediately. Because ATO system controls the train speed based on the train location, the accuracy of the train location control can be improved. A simulation system for the test of the automatic train operation using this method is designed.

디젤 엔진소음 II (Diesel Combustion Noise Reduction based on the Numerical Simulation)

  • Combustion oriented noise is a part of engine noise, which is mainly determined by the in-cylinder pressure profile and the structure attenuation of an engine. A numerical model for predicting the in-cylinder pressure profile and the resultant combustion noise developed by the use of a commercial code. The model is experimentally validated and updated based on the performance as well as the noise by considering the fuel injection timing, the fuel injection rate, Cetane number, intake temperature, and compression ratio. For providing a design guide of a fuel injector for a low combustion noise engine model, the optimal parameters of injection pressure profile, injection rate profile, and injection timing are determined, which gives the 5 dBA noise reduction.

충돌 제트 속도 분포를 고려한 액막의 두께와 속도 특성 (Characteristics of Thickness and Velocity of the Liquid Sheet Formed by Two Impinging Jets Considering Jet Velocity Profile)

  • In this study, the effect of jet velocity profile on the thickness and velocity of the liquid sheet formed by two impinging low speed jets was investigated. To predict the distribution of thickness and velocity of liquid sheet theoretically, the jet velocity profile which was measured experimentally was adopted in addition to the constant jet velocity as well as Poiseuille's parabolic profile. For three cases, the distribution of thickness and velocity of liquid sheet was analytically predicted by solving conservation equations including stagnation point. The predicted results were compared with previous experimental results. The jet velocity profile definitely affected the resulting characteristics of liquid sheet. The distribution of thickness and velocity of liquid sheet was more close to the measured results compared with that which was predicted by the assumption of constant jet velocity.
