  • Tin oxide films have been grown employing the chemical vapor deposition technique under reduced pressure conditions using tetramethyltin as the precursor and oxygen as the oxidant. An activation energy derived for the deposition reaction under representative deposition conditions has a value of 89±3 kJ mol-1, suggesting a typical kinetic control. Deposition rates of tin oxide films exhibit a near first order dependence on tetramethyltin partial pressure and a zeroth order dependence on oxygen partial pressure. This study provides the first quantitative information about the growth kinetics of tin oxide films from tetramethyltin by the cold-wall low-pressure chemical vapor deposition.

  • Carbon molecules with closed-cage structures are called fullerenes $(C_{60},\;C_{70})$, whose applications include super-conductors, sensors, catalysts, optical and electronic device, polymer composites, and biological and medical materials. The synthesis of fullerenes has been recently studied with low-pressure benzene/argon/oxygen flames. The formation of fullerene is known as molecular weight growth processes of PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon). This study presents results of PAHs and fullerene measurements performed in a low-pressure benzene/argon/oxygen normal co-flow laminar diffusion flame. Through the central tube of the burner, benzene vapors carried by argon are injected. The benzene vapors are made in a temperature-controlled bubbler. The burner is located in a chamber, equipped with a sampling system for direct collection of condensable species from the flame, and exhausted to a vacuum pump. Samples of the condensable are analyzed by HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) to determine the yields of PAHs and fullerene. Also, we computed mole fraction of fullerene and PAHs in a nearly sooting low pressure premixed, one-dimensional benzene/argon/oxygen flame (equivalence ratio ${\Phi}=2.4$, pressure=5.33kPa). The object of computation was to investigate the formation mechanism of fullerenes and PAHs. The computations were performed with CHEMKIN/PREMIX. As a result of this study, fullerenes were synthesized in a low pressure (20torr) $C_6H_6/Ar/O_2$ flames and the highest concentration of fullerene was detected just above the visible surface of a flame.

  • NBCO thin films have been fabricated by magnetron sputtering technique on heated $SrTiO_3$ substrates. The oxidation and crystallization of the films were strongly dependent on the distance between the targets and the substrate, as well as on the oxygen partial pressure. The critical temperatures were above 80K for the films prepared under the condition of a small target to substrate gap, in spite of a very low oxygen pressure of 0.2Pa. The results suggest the importance of the activated oxygen uptake into the films during sputtering.

  • Low-pressure plasmas (LPPs) were generated with different gases such as air, oxygen and nitrogen, and their inactivation effects against Escherichia coli were compared in order to evaluate the potential as a non-thermal microbial disinfection technology. Homogeneous plasmas were generated under low pressure below 1 Torr at gas flow rate of 350 mL/min regardless the types of gases. Temperature increases by LPPs were not detrimental showing less than ${10^{\circ}C}$ and ${25^{\circ}C}$ increases after 5 and 10 min treatments, respectively. The smallest temperature increase was observed with air LPP, and followed by oxygen and nitrogen LPPs. More than 5 log reduction in E. coli was achieved by 5 min LPP treatment but the destruction effect was retarded afterward. The LPP inactivation was represented by a iphasic first order reaction kinetics. The highest inactivation rate constant was achieved in air LPP and followed by oxygen and nitrogen LPPs. The small D-values of the LPP also supported its potentialities as a non-thermal food surface disinfection technology in addition to the substantial microbial reduction of more than 5 logs.

  • The YMnO$_3$ thin films were prepared on platinized-silicon substrates by chemical solution deposition and annealed at 750 to 85$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 h under various oxygen pressures, from 2 mTorr to 760 Torr. Effects of annealing oxygen pressures on the crystallization behavior and electrical properties of YMnO$_3$ thin films were investigated. Crystallinity and c-axis preferred orientation of YMnO$_3$ thin film were improved by decreasing the oxygen pressure but were deteriorated at extremely low oxygen pressure, 2 mTorr. Leakage current density of the YMn03 thin film decreased as the oxygen pressure decreased. The film annealed at 80$0^{\circ}C$ under 2 Torr, which had the best crystallinity and the highest c-axis preferred orientation. showed the best-developed ferroelectric C-V hysteresis.

  • We have fabricated a sensor system for on-line monitoring the oxygen permeability and diffusivity of six different polymer films using the miniaturized 6 cathode(Ag)-single anode(Ag/AgCl) type hexagonal oxygen electrode. This system consists of multiple input front-end electronics, signal conditioning circuit using the embedded microcontroller 80C196KC, PC interface circuit and PC with the OS for microcontroller and the operating program for this system. The digital low-[ass filter was programmed and the simulated filter characteristics were enough to eliminate the noise from sensor signal. According to the experimental results, the linearity coefficients of the output voltage to oxygen partial pressure for each sensor electrode of six cathode type oxygen sensor are 0.998, 0.997, 0.998, 0.997, 0.997, 0.997 respectively, and the response times are all within 4 minutes.

  • We studied the effect of the variation of the lattice constant on the electrical properties of $SrRuO_3$ thin films. In order to obtain films with different volumes, we varied the substrate temperature and oxygen pressure during the growth of the films on $SrTiO_3$ (001) substrates. The films were grown using a pulsed laser deposition method. The X-ray diffraction patterns of the grown films at low temperature and low oxygen pressure indicated the elongation of the c-axis lattice constant compared to that of the films grown at a higher temperature and higher oxygen pressure. The in-plane strain states are maintained for all of the films, implying the expansion of the unit-cell volume by the oxygen vacancies. The variation of the electrical resistance reflects the temperature dependence of the resistivity of the metal, with a ferromagnetic transition temperature inferred form the cusp of the curve being observed in the range from 110 K to 150 K. As the c-axis lattice constant decreases, the transition temperature linearly increases.

  • Effects of temperature, pressure, and gas residence time on methane combustion characteristics of mass produced oxygen carrier particle (OCN706-1100) were investigated in a pressurized fluidized bed reactor using methane and air as reactants for reduction and oxidation, respectively. The oxygen carrier showed high fuel conversion, high $CO_2$ selectivity, and low CO concentration at reduction condition and very low NO emission at oxidation condition. Moreover OCN706-1100 particle showed good regeneration ability during successive reduction-oxidation cyclic tests up to the 10th cycle. Fuel conversion and $CO_2$ selectivity decreased and CO emission increased as temperature increased. These results can be explained by trend of calculated equilibrium CO concentration. However, $CO_2$ selectivity increased as pressure increased and fuel conversion increased as gas residence time increased.

  • Extinction characteristics of pure hydrogen-oxygen diffusion flames, at high pressures in the neighborhood of the critical pressure of oxygen, is numerically studied by employing counterflow diffusion flame as a model flame let in turbulent flames in rocket engines. The numerical results show that extinction strain rate increases almost linearly with pressure up to 100 atm, which can be explained by comparison of the chain-branching-reaction rate with the recombination-reaction rate. Since contributions of the chain-branching reactions, two-body reactions, are found to be much greater than those of the recombination reactions, three-body reactions, extinction is controlled by two-body reactions, thereby resulting in the linearity of extinction strain rate to pressure. Therefore, it is found that the chemical kinetic behaviors don't change up to 100 atm. Consideration of the pressure fall-off reactions shows a slight increase in extinction strain rate, but does not modify its linearity to pressure. The reduced kinetic mechanisms, which were verified at low pressures, are found to be still valid at high pressures and show good qualitative agreement in prediction of extinction strain rates. Effect of real gas is negligible on chemical kinetic behaviors of the flames.

  • The electrical conductivity of highly pure polycrystalline $Yb_2O_3$ has been measured from 650 to 105$0^{\circ}C$ under oxygen pressure range of $10^{-5}$ to 102 torr. The conductivity dependence of oxygen pressure in the temperature region from 750 to 105$0^{\circ}C$ is approximated by $\sigma$ $\alpha$ $Po_2^{1/5.3}$. This shows that the conduction mechanism is associated with doubly ionized metal vacancies. Fairly low activation energy and the lack of oxygen pressure dependence are found over the temperature range of 650 to 75$0^{\circ}C$. The conduction mechanism can be explaned by not metal vacancies, but hopping oxygen ions in the oxide.
