This paper presents a passive air-breathing direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) which has been designed and tested. The single cell is fuelled by methanol vapor that is supplied through flow channel from a methanol reservoir at the anode, and the oxygen is supplied via natural air-breathing at the cathode. The methods for supplying the methanol vapor to the single cell were parallel channel and chamber. This research investigates various methods to identify the effects of using flow channels for providing the methanol vapor at the anode, and the opening ratio between the inlet and outlet ports for the methanol flow at the anode. The best flow channel condition for passive DMFC was a chamber, and the opening ratio was 0.8. Under these conditions, the peak power was 10.2mW/$cm^2$ at room temperature and ambient pressure. The key issues for the Passive DMFCs for using methanol vapor are that sufficient methanol needs to be supplied using a large as possible opening ratio. However, it is shown that the performance of the passive DMFC, which has a channel at the anode,is low due to the low differential pressure and insufficient methanol supply rate.
The purposes of this study are to analyze nitrogen oxides(NOx) formation mechanism and to reduce abnormal NOx emissions in gas turbines. Industrial gas turbines emissions have potential to negative affect to the atmosphere in many different ways such as photochemical smog, acid rain and global warming. In conventional gas turbine combustors, one of the main pollutants such as nitrogen oxide(NOx) species, are principally formed from combustion process of fuel with oxygen in the primary combustion zone, and their emission levels are highly depend on peak temperatures in the combustor. In order to examine the characteristics and the effect of NOx formation, we used gas turbine of which commercial operating in Korea. From the examination, it has been found that NOx emissions are relatively high at low load(output) and during combustion mode change. Also, the effect of Air/Fuel ratio was considered. As the Air/Fuel ratio was increased in Lean-Lean mode, the NOx emission was decreased. The results of this study indicated that NOx emission levels are highly depend on peak temperature and pressure of combustion process in the combustor.
(Ba,Sr)$TiO_3$ (BST) thin film with a perovskite structure has potential for the practical application in various functional devices such as nonvolatile-memory components, capacitor, gate insulator of thin-film transistors, and electro-optic devices for display. Normally, the BST thin films derived from sol-gel and sputtering are amorphous or partially crystalline when processed below $600^{\circ}C$. For the purpose of integrating BST thin film directly into a Si-based read-out integrated circuit (ROIC), it is necessary to process the BST film below $400^{\circ}C$. The microstructural and electrical properties of low-temperature crystallized BST film were studied. The BST thin films have been fabricated at $350^{\circ}C$ by UV-assisted rapidly thermal annealing (RTA). The BST films are in a single perovskite phase and have well-defined electrical properties such as high dielectric constant, low dielectric loss, low leakage current density, and high breakdown voltage. Photoexcitation of the organics contained in the sol-gel-derived films by high-intensity UV irradiation facilitates elimination of the organics and formation of the single-crystalline phase films at low temperatures. The amorphous BST thin film was transformed to a highly (h00)-oriented perovskite structure by high oxygen pressure processing (HOPP) at as low as $350^{\circ}C$. The dielectric properties of BST film were comparable to (or even better than) those of the conventionally processed BST films prepared by sputtering or post-annealing at temperature above $600^{\circ}C$. When external pressure was applied to the well-known contractive BST system during annealing, the nucleation energy barrier was reduced; correspondingly, the crystallization temperature decreased. The UV-assisted RTA and HOPP, as compatible with existing MOS technology, let the BST films be integrated into radio-frequency circuit and mixed-signal integrated circuit below the critical temperature of $400^{\circ}C$.
Many research groups have been manufacturing coated conductor by various processes such as PLD, MOD, and MOCVD, but the methods with production cost suitable for wide and massive application of coated conductor did not develop yet. Spray pyrolysis method adopting ultrasonic atomization was tried as one of the possible option. GdBCO precursor films have been deposited on IBAD substrate by spray pyrolysis method at low temperature and converted to GdBCO by post heat treatment. Ultrasonic atomization was used to generate fine droplets from precursor solution of Gd, Ba, and Cu nitrate dissolved in water. Primary GdBCO films were deposited at $500^{\circ}C$ and oxygen partial pressure of 1 torr. After that, the films were converted at various temperatures and low oxygen partial pressures. C-Axis oriented films were obtained IBAD substrates at conversion temperature of around $870^{\circ}C$ and oxygen partial pressures of 500 mtorr ~ 1 torr in a vacuum. Thick c-axis epitaxial film with the thickness of 0.4 ~ 0.5 ${\mu}m$ was obtained on IBAD substrate. C-axis epitaxial GdBCO films were successfully prepared by ex-situ methods using nitrate precursors on IBAD metal substrate. Converted GdBCO films have very dense microstructures with good grain connectivity. EDS composition analysis of the film showed a number of Cu-rich phase in surface. The precursor solution having high copper concent with the composition of Gd : Ba : Cu = 1 : 2 : 4 showed the better grain connectivity and electrical conductivity.
This study aimed to investigate the membrane fouling and sludge characteristics in a pilot-scale submerged membrane bioreactor (MBR) operated under low temperature ($7^{\circ}C$). To elucidate the mechanisms of membrane fouling at low temperature, we studied the correlation between MBR performances and physicochemical properties of sludge including extracellular polymeric substance (EPS), relative hydrophobicity (RH) and floc size during long-term operation. The MBR was shown able to remove chemical oxygen demand (COD) stably and efficiently (>90 %) in the case of overgrowth of filamentous bacteria (bulking sludge) at low temperature. On the other hand, the occurrence of filamentous bulking greatly accelerated membrane fouling, as indicated by membrane filtration period of 14 days for filamentous bulking at $7^{\circ}C$, in comparison with that of 27 days for non-bulking sludge at $24^{\circ}C$ The overgrowth of filamentous bacteria resulting from low-temperature condition led to an increased release of EPS, higher RH, smaller floc size and lower fractal dimension of sludge. These factors accelerated the formation of compact cake layer on membrane surface in association with performance diminution in terms of increase in transmembrane pressure (TMP) of the membrane and thus the decrease in membrane permeability.
Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) is a typical highly Transparent Conductive Oxide (TCO) currently used as a transparent electrode material. Most widely used deposition method is the sputtering process for ITO film deposition because it has a high deposition rate, allows accurate control of the film thickness and easy deposition process and high electrical/optical properties. However, to apply high quality ITO thin film in a flexible microelectronic device using a plastic substrate, conventional DC magnetron sputtering (DMS) processed ITO thin film is not suitable because it needs a high temperature thermal annealing process to obtain high optical transmittance and low resistivity, while the generally plastic substrates has low glass transition temperatures. In the room temperature sputtering process, the electrical property degradation of ITO thin film is caused by negative oxygen ions effect. This high energy negative oxygen ions(about over 100eV) can be critical physical bombardment damages against the formation of the ITO thin film, and this damage does not recover in the room temperature process that does not offer thermal annealing. Hence new ITO deposition process that can provide the high electrical/optical properties of the ITO film at room temperature is needed. To solve these limitations we develop the Magnetic Field Shielded Sputtering (MFSS) system. The MFSS is based on DMS and it has the plasma limiter, which compose the permanent magnet array (Fig.1). During the ITO thin film deposition in the MFSS process, the electrons in the plasma are trapped by the magnetic field at the plasma limiters. The plasma limiter, which has a negative potential in the MFSS process, prevents to the damage by negative oxygen ions bombardment, and increases the heat(-) up effect by the Ar ions in the bulk plasma. Fig. 2. shows the electrical properties of the MFSS ITO thin film and DMS ITO thin film at room temperature. With the increase of the sputtering pressure, the resistivity of DMS ITO increases. On the other hand, the resistivity of the MFSS ITO slightly increases and becomes lower than that of the DMS ITO at all sputtering pressures. The lowest resistivity of the DMS ITO is $1.0{\times}10-3{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ and that of the MFSS ITO is $4.5{\times}10-4{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$. This resistivity difference is caused by the carrier mobility. The carrier mobility of the MFSS ITO is 40 $cm^2/V{\cdot}s$, which is significantly higher than that of the DMS ITO (10 $cm^2/V{\cdot}s$). The low resistivity and high carrier mobility of the MFSS ITO are due to the magnetic field shielded effect. In addition, although not shown in this paper, the roughness of the MFSS ITO thin film is lower than that of the DMS ITO thin film, and TEM, XRD and XPS analysis of the MFSS ITO show the nano-crystalline structure. As a result, the MFSS process can effectively prevent to the high energy negative oxygen ions bombardment and supply activation energies by accelerating Ar ions in the plasma; therefore, high quality ITO can be deposited at room temperature.
The high velocity oxygen fuel spraying (HVOF) is a kind of surface modification process technology to form the sprayed coating layer after spraying the powder to molten or semi-molten state by the ultra-high speed at the high-temperature heat source and conflicting with a substrate. It is desirable to melt completely the thermal spray powder in order to produce the coating layer with an optimal adhesion, however, because a semi-molten powder in a spray process has the low efficiency and become a factor that degrades the mechanical property by the inducement of pore-forming within the coating layer. To improve the wear resistance, corrosion resistance and heat resistance, in this study, the plungers of high-speed and ultra-high pressure reciprocating hydraulic pumps for oil and water used in ironwork are produced with $420J_2$ and the coating layers of plungers are formed by the powders of WC-Co-Cr and WC-Cr-Ni including the high hardness WC. The surface of these plungers is modified by the super-mirror face grinding machine using variable air pressure developed in this laboratory, and then the characteristics of cross-sectional microstructure, and surface roughness and hardness values between no operation and 100 days-operation are examined and made a comparison. The fine tops and bottoms on surface roughness curve of oil-hydraulic pump plunger sprayed by WC-Cr-Ni are molded more and higher than those of water-hydraulic pump sprayed by WC-Co-Cr because the plunger diameter of oil-hydraulic pump is 0.4 times smaller than that of water-hydraulic pump and the pressure of oil-hydraulic pump exerted on the plunger is operated with the 70 bars higher than that of water-hydraulic pump. As a result, it is found that the values of centerline average surface roughness and maximum height for oil-hydraulic pump plunger are bigger than those of water-hydraulic pump plunger.
Compared to other nano-patterning techniques, Nano imprint Lithography (NIL) has some advantages of high throughput and low process cost. To imprint low temperature and pressure, UV Nano imprint Lithography, which using the monomer based UV curable resin is suggested. Because fabrication of high fidelity pattern on topographical substrate is difficult, bi-layer Nano imprint lithography, which are consist of easily removable under-layer and imprinted pattern, is being used. If residual layer is not remained after imprinting, and under-layer is removed by oxygen RIE etching, we might be able to fabricate the bi-layer pattern for easy lift-off process.
In order to improve dyeability of poly(ethylene terephthalate)(PET) micro filament fabrics, the effect of the prior oxygen low temperature plasma on the subsequent dyeing(deep dyeing, printing) was examined in various conditions. The apparent concentration of dyed PET micro filament fabrics was increased by $O_{2}$plasma treatment. Higher discharge power levels and higher reactor pressure values created more significant effect. The wettability was significantly increased by $O_{2}$ plasma treatment. Therefore, it is predicted that introducing hydrophilic group on the surface of material can improve the apparent concentration of PET micro filament fabrics.
