The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of iron-enriched cereal supplement and nutrition education program on nutritional status and life style of children. Elementary school students(n=170) aged of 11 years old at Seoul were participated. Subjects were supplemented with iron-enriched cereal for breakfast and provided with 2 sessions of nutrition education during 3 months. Intake of carbohydrate, iron, sodium, zinc, vitamin A, vitamin $B_1$, vitamin $B_2$, vitamin C, niacin, and folic acid was significantly increased after cereal supplement. Caloric intake was similar to KDRIs during both before and after cereal supplement. There was no improvement on exercise and dietary habits after nutrition education. Male students tended to sleep later, wake up early, and ate snack less than female. Cereal supplement was effective on improving nutritional status, but short-term nutrition education had no effect on modification of life style. Thus, further studies are required to develop long-term education program effective on improving lift style and eating habits in children.
Patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis are at risk for protein-energy malnutrition because of nutrient losses during dialysis. This study determined the nutritional status of patients undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). Forty-four patients receiving CAPD were divided into two groups according to dialysis period. We investigated the nutritional status of the patients by measuring anthropometric and biochemical parameters, as well as food intake, self-appetite, dietary habits, a subjective global assessment, and a total nutritional status assessment. Group I subjects (7 males, 13 females) had received dialysis for < 2 years, whereas the group II subjects (18 males, 6 females) received dialysis for ${\geq}$ 2 years. Energy intake with added dextrose in the dialysate per kg of body weight was $30.3{\pm}5.8$ kcal in group I and $29.0{\pm}8.1$ kcal in group II. The average protein intake per kg of weight was $1.0{\pm}0.3$ g in group I and $1.0{\pm}0.4$ g in group II, which were less than the recommended protein intake for patients undergoing CAPD (1.2-1.5 g/kg). Mean serum albumin level was significantly lower in group II than that in group I (p < 0.05). A recent self-appetite score was significantly higher in group II than that in group I (p < 0.01). The dietary habits score was significantly lower in group II than that in group I (p < 0.05). The subjective global assessment was significantly higher in group I (85.0%) than that in group II (54.2%) under normal nutrition status (p < 0.05). The dialysis period was significantly and negatively correlated with the subjective global assessment (r = -0.502, p < 0.01) and the total nutritional status assessment (r = -0.575, p < 0.01). These results demonstrated that patients undergoing CAPD for ${\geq}$ 2 years had worse nutritional status than those who had been undergoing dialysis for < 2 years. Good nutritional status can predict the long-term survival of patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis. Additionally, the exact evaluation of nutritional status before 2 years will be important to maintain long-term dialysis therapy in patients undergoing CAPD.

We have shown that long-term intake of Korean red ginseng (KRG) delays disease progression in HIV-I infected patients. In the present study to investigate whether this slow progression was associated with protective human leukocyte antigen (HLA) alleles as well as with KRG-intake, we have performed clinical analysis of 31 HIV-1 infected patients who have been living for more than 10 years without any antiretroviral therapy. Average amount of KRG-intake over $130\;{\pm}16$ months was $4,797\;{\pm}4,921\;g$ and the annual decrease in CD4 T cell (AD) was $30\;{\pm}29{\mu}L$. We observed significant correlations among amount of KRG-intake, AD(r=-0.53, P < 0.01), and plasma HIV-1 RNA copy (r=-0.35, P < 0.05), along with a significant correlation between KRG-intake and HLA score AD(r=-0.49, P < 0.01), whereas there was no significant correlation between HLA score and AD or viral load. When the 31 patients were divided into 2 groups based on the amount of KRG-intake, the $AD(14/{\mu}L)$ in the 16 patients who had taken higher amounts of KRG was significantly less than that $(49/{\mu}L)$ in the 15 patients with a little or no KRG-intake (P < 0.01). These data indicate that KRG-intake significantly slows CD4 T cell depletion in HIV-1 infected patients.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between coffee intake and metabolic syndrome, which has increased the burden of social illness, based on the data of the $6^{th}$ National Health and Nutrition Survey in 2015. The subjects' coffee intake level was divided into <1 cup/a day, 1~2 cups/a day, and ${\geq}3cups/a\;day$ and the general characteristics of the subjects were examined according to the classification. The effect of coffee consumption on the risk factors of metabolic syndrome was evaluated by OR value. The age of the subjects was higher than that of the other groups in the < 1 cup/day group and the TG in the prediabetic group was above the normal level in the ${\geq}3cups/day$ group. In the normal group of blood glucose, coffee intake was the highest in <1 cup/day group and BP was significantly different according to intake. In the multiple regression analysis conducted to identify the causal relationship between the risk of metabolic syndrome and coffee intake, BP was significantly decreased in ${\geq}3cups/day$ coffee group in normal group. In order to control the level of blood lipids in pre-diabetic subjects, it is necessary to establish dietary guidelines for foods that are frequently consumed, and various situations and long-term studies are needed to determine the precise effect of coffee intake on BP.
Six 16 months old Holstein steers were offered ad libitum feed for 7 months, to determine the (1) relationships of backfat thickness (BFT) to plasma leptin, and insulin; and (2) associations of TDN intake/kg body weight (BW) to plasma leptin, BFT and insulin. Feed intake, body weight and BFT were measured on selected monthly ages from day 1 to 8, day 1 and 8, and day 8, respectively. Blood was sampled on day 8 and the plasma was analyzed for leptin, insulin, glucose, NEFA, total cholesterol and triglyceride. Body weight and BFT increased, while TDN intake per kg BW decreased from 16 to 23 months old. Plasma leptin increased and mimicked the level of insulin, resulting to significant correlation (r=0.54; p<0.002). TDN intake was negatively related to plasma leptin (r=0.49; p<0.004), insulin (r=0.41; p<0.02) and BFT at 12 to 13th rib (r=0.48; p<0.005). Backfat thickness at 12 to 13th rib was positively related to plasma leptin (r=0.45; p<0.01). Negative associations of TDN intake with plasma leptin and BFT during finishing period suggest long-term involvement of adipose tissues in the feed intake regulation of steers fed high concentrate diet.
Early, aggressive nutrition is an important contributing factor of long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes. To ensure optimal growth in premature infants, adequate protein intake and optimal protein/energy ratio should be emphasized rather than the overall energy intake. Minimal enteral nutrition should be initiated as soon as possible in the first days of life, and feeding advancement should be individualized according to the clinical course of the infant. During hospitalization, enteral nutrition with preterm formula and fortified human milk represent the best feeding practices for facilitating growth. After discharge, the enteral nutrition strategy should be individualized according to the infant's weight at discharge. Infants with suboptimal weight for their postconceptional age at discharge should receive supplementation with human milk fortifiers or nutrient-enriched feeding, and the enteral nutrition strategy should be reviewed and modified continuously to achieve the target growth parameters.
Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the changes in the eating habits and lifestyle of middle-aged women in Gwangju during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A total of 428 middle-aged women aged between 40 and 60 participated in a survey relating to general information, food and lifestyle, health functional food, and menopausal symptoms. The correlation between the variables was analyzed. Results: In the positive habits, the intake of nutritional supplements for immunity enhancement increased the most, followed by the use of media to learn healthy eating tips, and diets including healthy food. Negative habits increased in the order of frequency of taking delivery orders, levels of stress or anxiety, and time spent sitting or watching movies. In the case of recommended foods, the intake increased the most in the order of eggs, fruits, vegetables, milk/dairy products, and seaweed. Non-recommended foods increased in the order of meat, bread, rice, and noodles. The awareness of health functional foods was in the increasing order of interest, knowledge, consumption experience, and purchase amount. The type of health functional food intake was in the increasing order of probiotics, multivitamin and mineral supplements, vitamin C, collagen, and omega-3. Menopausal symptoms were in the increasing order of bone and joint pain, poor sleep quality, emotional ups and downs, loneliness, and feeling of emptiness. In the correlation of major variables, positive habits showed a significant positive correlation with recommended food intake and the recognition of health functional foods. Negative habits showed a significant positive correlation with non-recommended food intake and a significant positive correlation with menopausal symptoms. Recommended food intake showed a significant positive correlation with health functional food recognition and intake and menopausal symptoms. Conclusions: This study suggests that it is necessary to establish social measures to reduce the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on middle-aged women and to ensure effective self-management through a healthy lifestyle since the pandemic has a long-term impact.
As fermented milk has been regarded as health food, the consumption of fermented milk has been increasing significantly these days. But there is not sufficient information on the effect of fermented milk on oral health. We have investigated the effect of long-term intake of t\fermented milk on saliva in preschool children, Sixty-four healthy, unmedicated preschool children were included in this study and were divided into control, fermented milk, and milk groups. The experimental period was 210days. We investigated the number of slaivary S. mutans, lactobacilli, and Candida, salivary pH, viscosity, and the concentration of salivary IgA at the beginning of the experiment. We examined these parameters at 10, 60, 110, 160, and 210 days after. The obtained results were as follows : 1. There were increases in the numbers of slaivary S. mutans in all groups through the experimental period. But, there was no consistent and significant difference among groups. 2. There was no significant change in the number of salivary lactobacilli in the fermented milk group throughout the experimental period. 3. The numbers of salivary Candida in the fermented milk and milk groups showed less fluctuation than that of the control group through the experimental period. 4. There was no decrease of salivary pH in all groups through the experimental period. 5. There were increases in the values of salivary viscosity in all groups. But, there was no consistent and significant difference among groups. 6. There were no consistent and significant difference in the concentration of salivary IgA in all groups through the experimental period. 7. There were increases of dmfs rate in all groups. But, there were no significant difference within each groups.

In recent years, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus has dramatically increased in Korea as the diet has rapidly become westernized. We determined the effect of long-term cola intakes on glucose metabolism and oxidative stress in weanling male Sprague Dawley rats consuming a moderate fat diet Thirty male rats, born from 6 female rats, were randomized into cola or water drinking groups. For 28 weeks, all rats were provided with an ad lib solid diet having 33 percent of its metabolisable energy as fat In addition, rats of the cola group were provided with ad lib cola instead of water. The daily total caloric intake did not differ between groups. The rats in the cola group consumed a higher proportion of carbohydrates, and their mean body weight and fasting serum insulin level were lower than that of the control group. Whole-body glucose disposal rates measured by an euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp were higher in the cola group. However, lipid peroxide levels in kidney tissue were higher in the cola group than in the control group. Superoxide dismutase activity in kidney tissues was lower in the cola group compared to the control group, while glutathion peroxidase and catalase activities were not significantly different between the two groups. In conclusion, long-term cola intakes decreased insulin resistance, but increased oxidative stress in kidney tissue due to decreased SOD activities, which may lead to kidney damage. Thus, moderate changes in insulin resistance may not affect the status of oxidative stress, and vice versa.
Obesity is the risk factor of atherosclerosis and not only increases triglyceride concentration in blood but also decreases relatively the ratio of TG to HDL-Cholesterol in blood. In case of obesity, systolic blood pressure is also increased in responding the increase of TG in blood. Index of obesity in red ginseng-taking group (ginseng group) was lower as compared with non-red ginseng-taking group (control group). The TG concentration, the ratio of triglyceride to HDL-cholesterol in blood and systolic blood pressure were decreased in the subjects of ginseng group compared with that in control group. It is inferred that long-term intake of ginseng products may help to prevent the risk of atherosclerosis and obesity.
