In this research, the fiber Bragg grating sensors with long gauge for displacement measurement in the long distance is developed and tested. The sensors show an accuracy and a capability for displacement measurement oin long distance. Monitoring using static logger of system of FBG sensor with strained optical fiber shows the capability of measurement in the harsh environment such as strong wind. Measurement of long distance displacement by optical fiber sensor if use $250{\mu}m$ optical fiber and impose some strong pre-tension shows possibility in monitoring of nuclear containment structure.
A new fabrication technique of long-period fiber gratings with periodically surface-etched structures is proposed. Transmission characteristics of the periodically surface-etched long-period fiber gratings are improved by changing strain because of variation of coupling strength between the core and the cladding modes. The sensitivities of the periodically surface-etched long-period fiber gratings to strain, torsion, and ambient refractive index were measured. The strain and the torsion sensitivities were measured to be $-0.033\;dB/\mu\varepsilon$ and -1.30 nm m/rad, respectively. The ambient index sensitivity was measured to be -31.33 nm/RIU from a range from 1.33 to 1.42.

In recent days, the beneficial effects of using fiber reinforced concrete, especially Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete, have been on the rise. However, few studies on long-term behavior of SFRC are executed in spite of great demand of SFRC. The fact that SFRC is far better than NRC in various properties such as tensile strength, ductility, flexural toughness has been certified by many researchers. And, those advantages can be also applied to decrease the structures deterioration induced by creep and shrinkage. Furthermore, even though it is fact that SFRC is generally used in joint members to distribute concentrated stresses by fibers, SFRC is treated as NRC in designing especially for long-term behavior of structures. So this paper is about a study on the long-term response of SFRC applied to HPC about 40MPa. Therefore, in this paper, the test results of eighteen high-strength concrete specimens and steel fiber-reinforced concrete specimens, with steel fiber content of $1\%$ by volume were presented. The test result shows that SFRC is advantageous rather than NRC in long-term response.

The purpose of this study is to develop the processing techniques of Fiber Reinforced Metal by Liquid Phase Diffusion Bonding method with SiC fiber as a reinforcing material and CP Ti(Commercial Pure) as a matrix. The microstructure and the distribution of elements in reaction and CP Ti(Commercial Pure) as a matrix. The microstructure and the distribution of elements is reaction zone among CP Ti/Ti-15wt%Cu-20wt%Ni(TCN20)/SiC long fiber were investigated by Optical Microscope, SEM/EDX, EPMA, X-ray and AES. The results obtained in this study are as follows. 1) When Ti matrix composite materials are fabricated under the bonding condition of 1273Kx1200sec, the SiC long fiber was the most suitable reinforcing material for Ti matrix composite materials. 2) With SiC long fiber under same condition, a TiC layer(1.0-1.6$\mu\textrm{m}$) was observed on the surface of SiC long fiber. 3) Liquid Phase Diffusion Bonding has shown the feasibility of production of Ti matrix composite materials.
In this paper, a long gauge Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensor system is described and long gauge FBGs are well-suited for measuring the upper parts of the bridge piers under the extremely severe movement conditions. In the experiments, we used more than 30m long FBG sensors to measure the movement of top part of the bridge piers which are separated from the main bridge by cutting the decks. With the actuator, the deck and girders were pushed and released. We checked the movement of the top of the pier while releasing the pressure of the actuator with the long gauge fiber sensor. In order to measure the movement of the upper part of the pier, the reference point must be outside of the pier. Using the optical fiber sensors, one end of the sensor is attached to the top of the pier and the other end is attached to the bottom of the next pier. The fiber sensors showed good response to the release loading and we could calculate the movement of the top part of the pear.

Various kind of fiber optic gauge sensors are available that can be bonded to civil engineering structures such as bridges, dams, tunnels and pipelines. A new fiber optic long gauge has significant advantages over other fiber optic sensors. These gauges can vary in length from less than 10 cm up to 30 m and provide the structural engineer with accurate measurements of displacement. These displacements can be converted to strains by dividing the measurement by the long gauge length. Using new optical technology, the long gauge instrument developed by FOX-TEK can choose max. 30 meters of gauge length so as to measure the very early stress/strain correlation curve. And this gauge length to be extended up to 100 meter in 2002.

The transmission characteristics of multiply cascaded phase-shifted long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) will be investigated theoretically and experimentally. Their passband can be changed by increasing the number of ${\pi}$ -shifted LPFGs. When two ${\pi}$ -shifted LPFGs with different grating lengths are cascaded in series, the bandwidth of the rejection band and passband can be controlled by the pristine characteristics of two gratings.

Carbon fiber-reinforced composite materials have been widely used in various industrial fields, but there are limits to increasing their strength and stiffness, because of the short-length fibers that are impregnated in them. In this study, a lab-scale small extruder system was developed with the capability to perform the carbon fiber impregnation and extrusion process in order to evaluate the properties of long-length carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic composite materials molded by the LFT-D method. Specimens were made with the small extruder to press-mold long-length carbon fiber composite materials and evaluate their material properties. As a result, it was found that the carbon fiber length, press load and carbon fiber contents have a considerable influence on the strength and stiffness. Additional studies on such factors as the mixing screw design and coating of the carbon fiber are needed in order to improve the mechanical properties of carbon fiber composite materials.

In order to investigate the influencing factors in flotation fractionation, flotations were performed at varied conditions. The selectivity of fines fractionation was mainly affected by long fiber flocculation degree and if there were not sufficient flocculation of long fibers, more loss of long fibers could not be avoided. The amount of flotation rejects were totally dependent on the stability of froth floated on the stock surface. Only small size fines could stabilize the froth as they hindered the drainage of liquid lamella in flotation-froth. More flotation reject and better flocculation of long fibers were two important factors for improving flotation. Changing a flotation flux or an air-mixing ratio to increase the flocculation of fibers increased long fiber ratio in the reject. In order to satisfy the both conditions of reducing long fiber loss and of increasing flotation reject, search of fractionation promoter is needed.

This study concerns with the effect of fiber weight fraction on the fracture toughness of long glass-fiber reinforced polypropylene composites. Fracture tests were conducted using compact tension (CT) specimens made of glass fiber polypropylene composites. Three fiber weight fractions of 20%, 30%, and 40% were used. Fracture toughness was determined from the compliance method. Results showed that compliance decreased with increasing fiber weight fraction while critical load increased with fiber weight fraction. Averaged fracture toughness increased 14% as fiber weight fraction increased from 20% to 40%.
