  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the design identity visual elements of optical shop brand$\underline{s}$ in order to provide objective data necessary for optical shop brands' design development. Methods: This study examined the design identity concept of the optical shop brands and analyzed visual elements of brand design identity with a focus on the symbols of domestic franchise optical shops, type of a symbol mark, representation style of logo type, color usage, use or non-use of character, etc. Results: Many symbols were directly associated with the eyeglasses, such as eyeglasses and eyes, face and iris. Along with that, letters or figures were also observed. For the type of symbol, most types were found to have the designs that took spherical and word mark shapes. Particularly, the word mark type had English words more often than Korean words. For logo types, the gothic format was dominant. In relation to the thickness of letter, thick boldface type was commonly used. The combination of 2 degrees was the color frequency used most often in the optical shop brand design. For the frequency of color usage, black and red colors were used most often. Particularly, the orange color, as well as the black color, was also often used for the main color of symbols or logo types. Meanwhile, the characters were used only in some optical shop. Most characters were animals and expressed in the cartoon and graphical forms. Conclusions: Typifier, symbol mark, logo type, color, and character are the elements forming the basic development system for brand design identity. Systematic design is needed which clearly ensures the function and role along with the mutual consistency as a important visual component of the optical shop brand.

  • As luxury goods market has expanded and has become more affordable, luxury consumption value has become more diversified. The purpose of this study is to classify visible characteristics of luxury consumption by the degree of logo clarity, and to explain this classification in relation to personal luxury consumption values. Also, the study utilized the concept of cultural capital, in addition to the concept of economic capital, in order to aid understanding of current new luxury consumption trend and give directions on brand signal strategies for luxury brands. In order to develop a survey that could measure an individual's cultural capital, focus group interviews, each composed of 5 women in their twenties and thirties, were conducted. Then, the survey was conducted on 230 females residing in Seoul who have purchased at least one product from a luxury brand within a year. The results suggest that luxury consumption can be explained by 'self-oriented value' and 'others-oriented value' as suggested in precedent studies. However, no significant difference was found between economic capital and these two luxury consumption values. However, the more cultural capital one possesses, the more one is likely to pursue 'self-oriented consumption value'. In studying the correlation between luxury consumption values and preference for brand signal clarity, respondents with 'self-oriented consumption value' has shown low preference towards highly visible brand logo when design and quality were equivalent. Also, respondents with 'other-oriented consumption value' has shown high preference towards highly visible brand logo.

  • This paper proposes an algorithm of CAD data extraction for the computer controlled marking system. In general, logo has been directly designed at the marking controller, but that is not an effective method because of the very limited working area. In this paper, for the data extraction we used a general PC and Auto CAD for logo design, and developed the software with GUI(Graphic User Interface) method. Then the data is transferred to the marking controller for marking on the object. With experimental result we showed the proposed algorithm to be very effective in the computer controlled marking system.

A total of 210 questionnaires were completed. A conjoint experimental method was used to develop hypothetical restaurants, and an ordinal probit model was used to measure the effects of the attribute levels on tourists' preference. The ordinal probit model analysis results for the data indicated an excellent model fit. The effects of the attribute levels on tourists' preferences were statistically significant. As expected, estimates of the marginal willingness to pay were statistically significant Moreover, the tourists were more willing to pay for grown area logo as compared to the other attribute levels. The tourists also considered the grown area logo as a very important attribute. Withe regard to developing and testing conjoint models in the design of choice experiments involving multifactor alternatives, this study may approach a deeper understanding of the conjoint experiment. Greater understanding of the conjoint experiment can improve the managerial diagnoses of the problems as well as the opportunities for different marketing strategies including local branding programs and menu development and marketing communications.

  • This study analyzed features of elements that compose a logo of inner wear brands to get the following results: First, it was found that "elegance" was the most frequently used word to express the concept of inner wear brands to be followed by words like dignity, high-end and aristocratic, words emphasizing femininity, such as feminine, romantic and sexy, words emphasizing practicality, such as convenient, practical, modern, functional and reasonable, and words emphasizing hygiene, such as clean, healthy and hygienic. This suggests that consumers nowadays pursue image more than functional aspects in the shopping of inner wear and consumers' pursuit of such values is reflected in the concept of inner wear brands. Second, unlike logos for outerwear brands that generally used initials of brand name, word-type logos for inner wear brands used the full name of brands, thus suggesting that they put more emphasis on delivery of information rather than on the symbolic aspect. In case of combining characters with concrete objects, they were found generally to use objects that give an soft, elegant and feminine image, such as flowers, woman's head and ribbons. Third, colors in the series of pink and red seemed to be used to convey the concept of inner wear brands that pursue such images as romanticism, femininity, elegance and sensibility, while colors in the series of blue, black and grey for such concepts as functionality, practicality, simplicity, health, hygiene and refinement. With reference to typeface used in the design of logos, unlike outerwear brands of which 83% use sans serif typeface for logos, relatively high percentage of inner wear was found to use typefaces of serif series to stress feminine flexibility and delicacy and give the image of elegance and classical tenderness. With reference to language used in logo naming for inner wear brands, 33 brands were found to use English and only three brands used Korean among the 36 brands surveyed. Even with inner wear brand logos that have Korean name, it was found that they used English in the use of logo marks. Like the result of previous studies, the result of this study indicates that methods to design brand logos for clothing should be incessantly sought in a way to build brand power as an important component to represent concept or function of brands and reinforce brand image.

  • The importance of corporate identity design has been recently highlighted in the marketing. However, logotype among marks that represent the image of a company has been neglected relatively comparing to symbol mark and logo mark. A logotype should be something to represent the personalities and characteristics of a company in suggestive ways. For such reasons, the image expressions by shape are thought to be important. Consequently, the formative aspects of visual communication design should be examined with emphases. However, it is true that studies on the formative aspects regarding logotypes and logo marks, especially studies on the shapes of font types and the responses of consumers to them, are lacking. Accordingly, this study examined the visual shape of logotype preferred by consumers and the shape of logotype preferred by consumers according to the business type of companies. As a result of research, there were differences in the elements of logotype preferred according to the business type of companies; as for construction companies is preferred the body of the type of dotum font with bold stem, without serif, with oblique, straight-line and curve-line endings; as for banks is preferred the body of the type of dotum font without serif, with oblique ending and with one-side curve style of serif, the stem in a middle level; as for laboratories is preferred the body of the type of dotum font with oblique ending, with bold stem and straight-line serif. The elements that should be commonly applied to construction companies, banks and laboratories appear to be the oblique ending but the curve-line ending and shallow stem seemed to be avoided. On the other hand, the serif, ending and gulim appeared to be applied differently according to the business type.
