  • Handoff is one of the most important features for the user's mobility in a wireless cellular communication system. It is related to resource reservation at nearby cells. Resource reservation to the new connection point should occur prior to handoff to enable the user to receive the data or services at the new location, at the same level of service as at the previous location. For the efficient resource reservation, mobility prediction has been reported as an effective means to decrease the call dropping probability and to shorten the handoff latency in a wireless cellular environment. A recently proposed algorithm, ZMHB, makes use of the history of the user's positions within the current cell to predict the next cell. But, the prediction of the ZMHB algorithm is found to be 80∼85% accurate for regular and random movements. In this paper, we propose a new improved ZMHB mobility prediction algorithm, which is called Detailed-ZMHB that uses detailed-zone-based tracking of mo-bile users to predict user movements. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is then demonstrated through a simulation.

  • A TSP(Tunnel Seismic Prediction) survey which is modified VSP(Vertical Seismic Profiling) survey applied in tunnel was carried out at Pyongtaek and Incheon liquefied petroleum gas(LPG) storage cavern during excavation. The TSP survey in Pyongtaek LPG storage cavern which is located below Namyangho was performed to confirm the location and orientation of the fault detected at pre-investigation stage. The TSP survey was carried out in access tunnel, construction tunnel, and watercurtain tunnel to characterize 3 dimensional figure of the fault. The results of TSP survey are compared four in vestigation boreholes drilled in shelter of access tunnel. The fault was also detected by borehole survey and the location was coincided with the result of TSP survey. Depending on the result of TSP survey and core logging, the design such as cavern layout and length was changed. Another TSP survey was performed in Incheon LPG storage cavern which is located below sea. Because of poor geological information at pre-investigation stage and suffering from heavy leakage of groundwater, the TSP survey to detect fracture zone was carried out. The support and grouting design was reflected by the result of TSP survey.

  • The empirical correlations for the prediction of breakup length of liquid jet in uniform cross flow are reviewed and classified in this study. The breakup length of liquid jets in cross flow was normally discussed in terms of the distances from the nozzle exit to the column breakup location in the x and y directions, called as column fracture distance and column fracture height, respectively. The empirical correlations for the prediction of column fracture distance can be classified as constant form, momentum flux ratio form, Weber number form and other parameter form, respectively. In addition, the empirical correlations for the prediction of column fracture height can be grouped as momentum flux ratio form, Weber number form and other parameter form, respectively. It can be summarized that the breakup length of liquid jet in a cross flow is a basically function of the liquid to air momentum flux ratio. However, Weber number, liquid-to-air viscosity ratio and density ratio, Reynolds number or Ohnesorge number were incorporated in the empirical correlations depending on the investigators. It is clear that there exist the remarkable discrepancies of predicted values by the existing correlations even though many correlations have the same functional form. The possible reasons for discrepancies can be summarized as the different experimental conditions including jet operating condition and nozzle geometry, measurement and image processing techniques introduced in the experiment, difficulties in defining the breakup location etc. The evaluation of the existing empirical correlations for the prediction of breakup length of liquid jet in a uniform cross flow is required.

  • Moving object management systems manage spatiotemporal data, which change their location over tine such as people, animals, and cars. These moving object management systems can be applied to vehicle location tracking, digital battlefield, location-based service, and so on. The existing moving object management systems only manage past or future location of the moving objects separately. Therefore, they cannot suggest estimation method of uncertain past or future location of the moving objects. In this paper, we propose a moving object management system, which not only manages historical data of the moving objects, but also predicts past and future location of the moving objects using historical data stored in database. We define the moving objects for vehicle location tracking and propose a moving object database structure. Finally, we suggest an execution model of the proposed system and apply the execution model to a virtual scenario for vehicle tracking.

  • A study of the wave conditions for the Asabo offshore location at the Qua Iboe oil field in Eastern Nigeria has been carried out. Statistical analysis was applied to three (3) years of data comprising spectral periods, Tp and significant wave heights, Hs. The data was divided into two (2); data from October to April represents one set of data and data from May to September represents another set of data. The results were compared with similar studies at other locations offshore of West Africa. It was found that there is an absence of direct swellwaves from the Southern Ocean reaching the location under study (the Asabo site). This work suggests that the wave system is largely emanating from the North Atlantic storms. The presence of numerous islands near the Asabo location shields the site from effects of storms from south west and therefore swells from the Southern Ocean. It is noted that the local wind has little or no contribution. An Hs maximum of 2 m is noted at the Asabo offshore location. It is found that the Weibull distribution best describes the wave distribution at Asabo. Thus, the Weibull distribution is suggested to be adequate for long term prediction of extreme waves needed for offshore design and operations at this location.

  • This paper describes the prediction of location of PD signals in GIS using the difference in the measured time between first and second wave arrival by the external-type PD sensors. It is well accepted that the electromagnetic wave in GIS propagates at the velocity of $3{\times}10^8$m/s. Consequently, we could identify the location of PD with high accuracy. The experience at the fields and the problems for the judgment are also discussed in detail.

  • In a ship block logistics application, acquisition of locations is required in order to identify location of the ship blocks. A Smart device equipped with a GPS sensor can be used as a mobile client for a ship block logistics application. However the precision of GPS components on a commercial smart device is not high enough. Therefore, using the GPS for localization may produce significant positioning errors in a ship block logistics system. This paper proposes a method to reduce errors in measuring locations using a smart device. Based on the knowledge of how the location information is used in a ship block logistics application, and the predictability of the client's moving line based on geographical layout of a shipyard area, our proposed technique enables a better prediction of the ship blocks location. Performance evaluation shows that the proposed technique can significantly reduce the positional error.

  • Governing parameters for determination of the location of crack initiation and direction of crack initiation were investigated by performing fretting fatigue tests and analysis on Al 2024-T351. Fatigue tests were carried out using biaxial fatigue machine. It was shown that the dominant fatigue crack tended to initiate at the outer edge of one of the four bridge pads, growing at an angle beneath a pad, before turning perpendicular to the orientation of the axial load. Distribution of stresses generated during fretting fatigue loading along the interface was calculated by elastic FE simulation. It can be known that the location of crack initiation can be predicted by using the maximum tangential stress range. Futhermore, the crack initiation direction can also be predicted by a maximum tangential stress range.

  • Trilateration is a typical method to locate an object, which requires inherently at least three prerecognized reference points. In some cases, owing to out of reachability to communication facilities the target node cannot be reachable always to three base stations. This paper presents a predictive method, which can identify the location of a moving target node in real time even though the target node could not get in touch with all three base stations. The method is based on the PIDcontrolled Moving Objects Spatio-Temporal Model Algorithm. Simulation results verify that this method can predict the moving direction of a moving target, and then combine with its past position information to judge accurately the location.

  • The Combustion gas behavior induced by fire in a building is numerically investigated. The typical building for this analysis is partially divided by a vertical baffle projecting from the ceiling. The solution procedure includes the low Reynolds number ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model for the turbulent flow and the discrete ordinates method is used for the calculation of radiative heat transfer equation. The effects of the location and size of fire source and baffle length on velocity and temperature distributions, species mass fraction and flame location are analyzed. As the results of this study, it is found that the case when the fire source is located at the vertical wall is more dangerous than at the bottom wall in view of the combustion products and flame location. It is also found that the radiation effect cannot be neglected in analyzing the building in fire.
