Location information of mobile objects is applied to vehicle tracking, digital battlefields, location based services, and telematics. Their location coordinates are periodically measured and stored in the application systems. The linear function is mainly used to estimate the location information that is not in the system at the query time point. However, a new method is needed to improve uncertainties of the location representation, because the location estimation by linear function induces the estimation error. This paper proposes an application method of the cubic spline interpolation in order to reduce deviation of the location estimation by linear function. First, we define location information of the mobile object moving on the two-dimensional space. Next, we apply the cubic spline interpolation to location estimation of the proposed data model and describe algorithm of the estimation operation. Finally, the precision of this estimation operation model is experimented. The experimentation comes out more accurate results than the method by linear function, although the proposed location estimation function uses the small amount of information. The proposed method has an advantage that drops the cost of data storage space and communication for the management of location information of the mobile objects.
As the mobile device and broadband wireless internet such as WiBro, HSDPA is widely spreading, various types of advertisement and services based on personal location information can be provided. However, with convenience supported by these services, it is possible to be increased an invasion of privacy such as personal location and moving pattern. In this paper, we analysis an essential element for protection of privacy related on location information in mobile environment and propose location privacy protocol for managing location privacy self-control. And we design and implementation prototype of location privacy self-control system which is able to manage user's location privacy condition oneself using the proposed location privacy protocol.

Location service is usually provided by the GPS method using satellites. In the next generation mobile communication systems which use smart antennas, location service can be accomplished using direction of arrival (DOA) estimation techniques. In this paper, we propose a DOA estimation technique for the location service of the next generation mobile communication systems and investigate the validity of the proposed technique through computer simulation. First, DOA estimation problems of distributed sources are considered using vortical and horizontal array processors which are orthogonal to each other. The DOA of the elevation angle is estimated by the vertical array processor and then that of the azimuth angle is estimated by the horizontal array processor. Finally, the procedures of the location service for specific signal sources using three smart antennas are exhibited by computer simulation to show that the proposed DOA estimation technique can be used for the location service in the next generation mobile communication systems.
Consider connection-oriented wireless cellular net-works. To establish a circuit or virtual circuit in such a network, a paging message is broadcast over a region at which the destined mobile station is presumed to reside, (identified as a paging area). For an effective paging mechanism, it is desirable to provide the location information of mobile stations to the network. In this paper, we consider a mobile controlled location update scheme under which each mobile station periodically reports its current location information to the network by using an inherent timer (without measuring the power of signals transmitted from base stations). Based on the latest information about a mobile station's location, a paging area is selected to page the mobile station. Note that under this scheme, a mobile station may not yet have reported its location change while sojourning out of the current paging area. In such situation, the mobile station can not receive a paging message destined to it. Frequent location updates can reduce the paging failure rate incurred by mobile stations'sojourning out of the paging area. However, larger bandwidth is needed for location update as the location update rate is increased. On the other hand, as the size of the paging area is increased, the paging failure rate is decreased, while larger bandwidth is required for paging. Thus, we first present a model for mobility, paging and location update processes, and secondly investigate the effect of network parameters on the paging failure rate and the amount of bandwidth used for paging and location update. Finally, we formulate problems to find proper values for the location update rate and paging area size under the constraints on the bandwidth usage levels for location update and paging.

In mobile communication systems, location management deals with the location determination of users in a network. One of the strategies used in location management is to partition the network into location areas. Each location area consists of a group of cells. The goal of location management is to partition the network into a number of location areas such that the total paging cost and handoff (or update) cost is a minimum. Finding the optimal number of location areas and the corresponding configuration of the partitioned network is a difficult combinatorial optimization problem. This cell grouping problem is to find a compromise between the location update and paging operations such that the cost of mobile terminal location tracking is a minimum in location area wireless network. In fact, this is shown to be an NP-complete problem in an earlier study. In this paper, artificial bee colony (ABC) is developed and proposed to obtain the best/optimal group of cells for location area planning for location management system. The performance of the artificial bee colony (ABC) is better than or similar to those of other population-based algorithms with the advantage of employing fewer control parameters. The important control parameter of ABC is only 'Limit' which is the number of trials after which a food source is assumed to be abandoned. Simulation results for 16, 36, and 64 cell grouping problems in wireless network show that the performance of our ABC is better than those alternatives such as ant colony optimization (ACO) and particle swarm optimization (PSO).
One of the main chalenges in personal communication services (PCS) is to locate many mobile terminals that may move frequently from place to place. Such a system operation is called location management. Many network signaling traffic, and database queries are required to achieve such a task. Several strategies have been proposed to improve the efficiency of location management. These strategies use location register databases to store the current location on mobile terminals, and are vulnerable to failure of the location registers. In this paper, we propose a fault-tolerant pointer forwarding with distributed home location register (FT-RFDHLR) to tolerate the failure of location registers. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated by an analytical model, and is compared with thew pointer forwarding with the single home location register (PFSHLR), the pointer forwarding with distributed home location register (PFDHLR), Biaz's bypass forwarding strategy (BFS) and two-path forwarding strategy (TPFS).

This paper attempts to improve the existing architecture of location register for location management in Private Network to Network Interface(PNNI)-based wireless ATM networks. Our approach enhances the hierarchical architecture of location registers based on a PNNI hierarchical architecture, which is referred to as the logical hierarchy architecture of location registers. This paper introduces a logical hierarchy architecture for location registers to reduce the cost of their location management. This logical hierarchy architecture of location registers begins with the lowest level physical location registers that are organized into clusters called logical groups. These logical groups are then represented in higher layers by logical nodes. These logical nodes are again grouped into clusters that are treated as single nodes by the next higher layer. In this way, all location registers are included in this tree-type logical hierarchy architecture. Compared with the existing physical hierarchy architecture of location registers, the analysis results show that the proposed logical hierarchy architecture can reduce the number of databases and thereby the average total location management cost.

Currently, various kinds of contents using smart phone's location information are developed and provided to users. The market size of the location-based service industry utilizing location information is also increasing every year and the majority of smart phone users occupy university students and most of the university students are using their owns smart phones, and they are the biggest users of location-based services and the main target of location information collection. In this paper, we conduct to a survey how university students understand about location information. Based on the results of the survey, we will deeply examine which one is needed to improve understanding of university students' location information collection and usage and what should be considered for the development of the location-based service industry and education of location information and then we propose some helpful suggestion.
One of the most important issue in location-aware computing is tracking moving objects efficiently. To this end, an efficient protocol which updates location information in a location server is highly needed. In fact, the performance of a location update strategy highly depends on the assumed mobility pattern. In most existing works, however, the mobility issue has been disregarded and too simplified as linear function of time. In this paper, we propose a new mobility model, called state-based mobility model (SMM) to provide more generalized framework for both describing the mobility and updating location information of complexly moving objects. We also introduce the state-based location update protocol (SLUP) based on this mobility model. Using experimental comparison, we illustrate that the proposed technique is many times better in reducing location update cost and the communication bandwidth consumption.
Location tracking is used to keep track of the location information of a mobile terminal in an idle state for a call setup between mobile terminals. In this paper, we introduce a new location tracking strategy that utilizes spatial locality to have better performance than a movement based location tracking strategy. We reduce a lot of unnecessary location updates by updating the location information of a mobile terminal using the virtual movement path, which is generated after removing spatial localities in the actual movement path. Simulation results show that the proposed strategy greatly reduces the overall location tracking cost.
