  • In order to modify flexible mode frequencies, finite element analysis is applied for a lens-holder in pick-up actuator. Several design parameters like shape and local dimension of a lens-holder were selected adequately and sensitivities of the design variables for vibration modes were obtained by FE analysis and this result was used for updating FE model. A sensitivity matrix between the natural frequencies and the design variables was calculated by finite difference method. By comparing the calculated natural frequencies with target frequencies, modification of the design variables was acquired and used for improving FE model. Calculated natural frequencies after several iterations by FE analysis coincided with target frequencies and the errors between them were minimized.

  • Though there have been many researches to investigate the relationship between the damage location, damage size and the changes in eigenparameters, there have been few studies on the small-sized damages. Thus, this paper considers the plate with small local damages. The equation of motion for damaged plate is derived in terms of the damage distribution function and then the effects of small damages on the dynamic characteristics of plate are investigated. It is observed that the damage-induced modal coupling and a sufficient number of vibration modes should be considered especially for small damage detections.

  • Improvement of structure-borne noises in the vehicle compartments has been one of the primary concerns in the development of vehicles. The booming is an annoying low frequency interior noise and vibration in vehicle. But it is difficult to reduce the structure-born booming noise in traditional method - trial and error within the shorten development schedule. So in present, the structure dynamic modification (SDM) method helpful to predict the effect of the local mass, stiffness, and damping is introduced. So in order to reduce the interior booming noise, the SDM was performed, and verified with modal test result. It was shown that the interior booming noise was reduced as predicted.

  • In this paper, static and oscillatory loss of stability of carbon nanotube conveying fluid and modelled as a thin-walled beam is investigated. Analytically nonlocal effect, transverse shear and rotary inertia are incorporated in this study. The governing equations and the boundary conditions are derived through Hamilton's principle. Numerical analysis is performed by using extend Galerkin method which enables us to obtain more exact solutions compared with conventional Galerkin method. Variations of critical flow velocity for analytically nonlocal effect, partially nonlocal effect and local effect of carbon nanopipes are investigated and pertinent conclusion is outlined.

  • In this paper, the variability of modal properties caused by temperature effects is assessed to adjust modal data used for frequency-based damage detection in plate-girder bridges. First, experiments on model plate-girder bridges are described. Next, the relationship between temperature and natural frequencies is assessed and a set of empirical frequency-correction formula are analyzed for the test structure. Finally, a frequency-eased method is used to locate and estimate severity of damage in the test structure using experimental modal data which are adjusted by the frequency-correction formula. Here, local damage in beam-type structures is detected by using measured frequencies and analytical mode shapes.

  • The design of a passive control solution based on tuned mass dampers (TMD's) requires the estimation of the actual masses involved in the undesired vibration. This task may result not so straightforward as expected when the vibration resides in subsets of different structural components. This occurs, for instance, when the goal is to damp out vibrations on stays. The theoretical aspects are first discussed and a design process is formulated. For sake of exemplification, a multiple TMD's configurations is eventually conceived for an existing timber footbridge located in the municipality of Trasaghis (North-Eastern Italy). The bridge span is 83 m and the deck width is 3.82 m.

  • In this paper, an analytical method is proposed to study the effect of crack and axial load on vibration behavior and stability of the cracked columns. Using the local flexibility model, the crack has been simulated by a torsional spring with connecting two segments of column in crack location. By solving governing eigenvalue equation, the effects of crack parameters and axial load on the natural frequencies and buckling load as well as buckling load are investigated. The results show that the presents of crack cause to reduction in natural frequencies and buckling load whereas this reduction is affected by the location and depth of the crack. Furthermore, the tensile and compressive axial load increase and decrease the natural frequencies, respectively. In addition, as the compression load approaches to certain value, the fundamental natural frequency reaches zero and instability occurs. The accuracy of the model is validated through the experimental data reported in the literature.

  • Recently, structures are becoming longer and higher because of the developments of new materials and construction techniques. However, such modern structures are more susceptible to excessive structural vibrations which cause deterioration in serviceability and structural safety. A modified probabilistic neural network(MPNN) approach is proposed to reduce the structural vibration. In this study, the global probability density function(PDF) of MPNN is reflected by summing the heterogeneous local PDFs automatically determined in the individual standard deviation of each variable. The proposed algorithm is applied for the vibration control of a three-story shear building model under Northridge earthquake. When the control results of the MPNN are compared with those of conventional PNN to verify the control performance, the MPNN controller proves to be more effective than PNN methods in decreasing the structural responses.

  • Thermoacoustic oscillation, which stems from phase correlation between unsteady heat release and acoustic fluctuation, can cause severe vibration and incite the excessive local heat transfer inside the rocket engine. It is very important to understand and prevent this phenomenon in the way of rocket engine development. In this study, the propulsion test facility of KSR-III, which is the first liquid propellant rocket developed by KARI, will be introduced. and the characteristics of thermoacoustic ocillation occurred at the facility will be examined.

  • In engineering education practical experiments is very important for each student, but due to the limitation of time and available resources such as laboratory equipment, space and instructors enough hands-on real experiments could not be provided to all students enrolled in the program throughout the academic year. In this sense web-based remote experiments through internet become a solution for engineering education and an emerging new paradigm for students and teachers. This paper presents the development of the web-based remote vibration experiment system for mechatronics education. Students can access this experimental equipment through an internet and conduct vibration experiment remotely without any restriction on time and place. IP address for data communication and web-service are assigned in local computer and then students receive experimental results and the captured pictures using network. The developed system provides real-time feedback of the tested results. Ubiquitous access to the system gained popularity from students.
