  • Local protein synthesis mediates precise spatio-temporal regulation of gene expression for neuronal functions such as long-term plasticity, axon guidance and regeneration. To reveal the underlying mechanisms of local translation, it is crucial to understand mRNA transport, localization and translation in live neurons. Among various techniques for mRNA analysis, fluorescence microscopy has been widely used as the most direct method to study localization of mRNA. Live-cell imaging of single RNA molecules is particularly advantageous to dissect the highly heterogeneous and dynamic nature of messenger ribonucleoprotein (mRNP) complexes in neurons. Here, we review recent advances in the study of mRNA localization and translation in live neurons using novel techniques for single-RNA imaging.

  • Adaptive brain function and synaptic plasticity rely on dynamic regulation of local proteome. One way for the neuron to introduce new proteins to the axon terminal is to transport those from the cell body, which had long been thought as the only source of axonal proteins. Another way, which is the topic of this review, is synthesizing proteins on site by local mRNA translation. Recent evidence indicates that the axon stores a reservoir of translationally silent mRNAs and regulates their expression solely by translational control. Different stimuli to axons, such as guidance cues, growth factors, and nerve injury, promote translation of selective mRNAs, a process required for the axon's ability to respond to these cues. One of the critical questions in the field of axonal protein synthesis is how mRNA-specific local translation is regulated by extracellular cues. Here, we review current experimental techniques that can be used to answer this question. Furthermore, we discuss how new technologies can help us understand what biological processes are regulated by axonal protein synthesis in vivo.

  • Objectives : This report is to investigate clinical effects of Chuna treatment on anterior translation of sternoclavicular joint. Methods : The female Patient, 50 years old, had anterior translation of sternoclavicular joint and the local pain. We treated the patient with Chuna treatment. In order to evaluate the improvement, Degrees of pain were measured with Visual Analogue Scale(VAS), and the change of anterior translation was assessed with anterior height of clavicle head. Results : After 3 weeks treatment, In VAS, Degrees of pain decreased 10 to 2. and Anterior height of clavicle head decreased 15mm to 5mm. Conclusions : Chuna treatment is effective on treating anterior translation of sternoclavicular joint and the local pain.

  • Recently, studies about bilingual word embedding have been gaining much attention. However, bilingual word embedding with Korean is not actively pursued due to the difficulty in obtaining a sizable, high quality corpus. Local embeddings that can be applied to specific domains are relatively rare. Additionally, multi-word vocabulary is problematic due to the lack of one-to-one word-level correspondence in translation pairs. In this paper, we crawl 868,163 paragraphs from a Korean-English law corpus and propose three mapping strategies for word embedding. These strategies address the aforementioned issues including multi-word translation and improve translation pair quality on paragraph-aligned data. We demonstrate a twofold increase in translation pair quality compared to the global bilingual word embedding baseline.

  • Wavelet Transform can effectively represent the local characteristics of a signal in the space-frequency domain. However, the feature vector extracted using wavelet transform is not translation invariant. This paper describes a new feature extraction method using wavelet transform, which is translation-invariant. Based on this translation-invariant feature extraction, the iris recognition method, based on this feature extraction method, is robust to noises. Experimentally, we show that the proposed method produces super performance in iris recognition.

  • Target word selection is one of the most important and difficult tasks in English-Korean Machine Translation. It effects on the translation accuracy of machine translation systems. In this paper, we present a new approach to select Korean target word for an English noun with translation ambiguities using multiple knowledge such as verb frame patterns, sense vectors based on collocations, statistical Korean local context information and co-occurring POS information. Verb frame patterns constructed with dictionary and corpus play an important role in resolving the sparseness problem of collocation data. Sense vectors are a set of collocation data when an English word having target selection ambiguities is to be translated to specific Korean target word. Statistical Korean local context Information is an N-gram information generated using Korean corpus. The co-occurring POS information is a statistically significant POS clue which appears with ambiguous word. The experiment showed promising results for diverse sentences from web documents.

  • Brain cytoplasmic 200 RNA (BC200 RNA) is proposed to act as a local translational modulator by inhibiting translation after being targeted to neuronal dendrites. However, the mechanism by which BC200 RNA inhibits translation is not fully understood. Although a detailed functional analysis of RNA motifs is essential for understanding the BC200 RNA-mediated translation-inhibition mechanism, there is little relevant research on the subject. Here, we performed a systematic domain-dissection analysis of BC200 RNA to identify functional RNA motifs responsible for its translational-inhibition activity. Various RNA variants were assayed for their ability to inhibit translation of luciferase mRNA in vitro. We found that the 111-200-nucleotide region consisting of part of the Alu domain as well as the A/C-rich domain (consisting of both the A-rich and C-rich domains) is most effective for translation inhibition. Surprisingly, we also found that individual A-rich, A/C-rich, and Alu domains can enhance translation but at different levels for each domain, and that these enhancing effects manifest as cap-dependent translation.

  • Local deformations in back filling materials of two sands and one glass bead with different particle shapes behind a rigid retaining wall were studied. Two kinds of boundary conditions were compared: active wall translation and active rotation of the wall about its toe. Effect of the speed of active wall translation was also investigated. The digital image correlation method was used to analyze local deformation developments inside the materials. Test results showed that particle shape and density mainly influence the inclination angle and width of the shear band. The general shear band pattern is strongly dependent on the wall movement mode, while it was little influenced by particle shape. Within a limited range of wall speed in this study, shear band became wider and local deformation became larger with increase of wall speed.

  • Global firms have to acquire various kinds of knowledge from worldwide markets and use it strategically in local markets. Especially, the ability to learn competitive advantage of an industry leader or competing firm is a critical factor in a firm's competitiveness. The concept of knowledge transfer has been used to explain these phenomena. However, with the broadening concept of knowledge and increasing importance of interaction between firms, the perspective of knowledge transfer has reached its limits. In this study we will conceptualize the new concept of 'knowledge translation', and analyze the globalization case of Hyundai Motor Co. to improve the validity and usefulness of this perspective. The results show that knowledge translation is a critical factor of success in a firm's globalization and efficient management of the knowledge translation process enhances a firm's global competitiveness.

  • A new method for recognizing and locating partially occluded or overlapped two-dimensional objects regardless of their size, translation, and rotation, is presented. Dominant points approximating occuluding contoures of objects are generated by finding local maxima of smoothed k-cosine function, and then used to guide the contour segment matching procedure. Primitives between the dominant points are produced by projecting the local contours onto the line between the dominant points. Robust classification of primitives. Which is crucial for reliable partial shape matching, is performed using adaptive resonance theory (ART2). The matched primitives having similar scale factors and rotation angles are detected in the hough space to identify the presence of the given model in the object scene. Finally the translation vector is estimated by minimizing the mean squred error of the matched contur segment pairs. This model-based matching algorithm may be used in diveerse factory automation applications since models can be added or changed simply by training ART2 adaptively without modifying the matching algorithm.
