Through the full scale ship collision response analysis of high speed passenger ship with underwater floating matters, the objective of this study is to perform the crashworthy safety assessment of its hull and passengers. For this safety assessment, diverse collision scenarios could be established through the thorough understanding of damage mechanisms due to the collision of its hydrofoil system with underwater floating matter examining the damage informations of its hull and passengers from the collision accidents, and through the estimation of the damages of its hull and passenger. The next step, crashworthy safety assessment of its hull and passengers, was carried out by the collision response analyses of high speed passenger ship with underwater floating matter using Fluid-Structure Interaction(FSI) analysis technique of LS-DYNA code in consideration of surrounding water, and using local zooming analysis technique.

In this study, a simplified analysis method was developed to evaluate the fatigue damage of an ice-going ship under broken ice condition. The global ice load, which is essentially calculated at the design stage of the Arctic vessel, and the hull form information were used to estimate the local ice load acting on the outer-shell of the ship. The local ice load was applied to the finite element analysis model, and the Weibull parameters for the target fatigue point were derived. Finally, fatigue damage was evaluated by applying the S-N curve and the Palmgren-Miner rule. For the verification of the proposed method, numerical analyses using direct approach were performed for the same conditions. A numerical model that implements the interaction between ice and structure was introduced to verify the local ice load and the stress calculated from the proposed method. Finally, the fatigue analyses of the Baltic Sea for actual ice conditions were performed, and the results of the proposed method, the method using numerical analysis, and the LR method were compared.

The object of this study is to get the superior double hull structure to its crashworthiness against collision comparing absorbed energy capacities of its various types with each other, varying material properties, collision positions and velocities, and structural arrangements such as double hull width, web and stringer spaces, etc. Local absorbed energy capacities, failure behaviors and damage extents of their members are also considered during collision in addition to the estimations of their global ones. This paper describes a series of numerical simulations of collisions between DWT 45,000 oil tanker(struck ship) and DWT 10,500 rigid one(striking ships) using Hydrocode LS/DYNA3D. Collisions are assumed to occur at the middle of struck ship with striking one moving at right angle to its centerline. The following remarks were obtained through this study: More flexible the double hull structure is, much superior its crashworthiness against collision is. The increment of double hull width does not give much influence than other factors do. The exact use of material property such as failure strain is also important on the numerical simulation of collision.
Survivability improvement method for naval ship design has been continually developed. In order to design naval ships considering survivability, it is demanded that designers should establish reasonable damage conditions by air explosion. Explosion may induce local damage as well as global collapse to the ship. Therefore possible damage conditions should be realistically estimated in the design stage. In this study the authors used ALE technique, one of the structure-fluid interaction techniques, to simulate air explosion and investigated survival capability of damaged naval ships. Lagrangian-Eulerian coupling algorithm, equation of the state for explosive and air, and simple calculation method for explosive loading were also reviewed. It is shown that air explosion analysis using ALE technique can evaluate structural damage after being attacked. This procedure can be applied to the real structural design quantitatively by calculating surviving time and probability.

Sea ice is the main factor affecting the safety of the Arctic engineering. However, traditional numerical methods derived from classical continuum mechanics have difficulties in resolving discontinuous problems like ice damage. In this paper, a non-local, meshfree numerical method called "peridynamics", which is based on integral form, was applied to simulate the interaction between level ice and a cylindrical, vertical, rigid structure at different velocities. Ice in the simulation was freshwater ice and simplified as elastic-brittle material with a linear elastic constitutive model and critical equivalent strain criterion for material failure in state-based peridynamics. The ice forces obtained from peridynamic simulation are in the same order as experimental data. Numerical visualization shows advantages of applying peridynamics on ice damage. To study the repetitive nature of ice force, damage zone lengths of crushing failure were computed and conclude that damage zone lengths are 0.15-0.2 times as ice thickness.
As regulations concerning ship vibration and noise are becoming stricter, considerable attention is being drawn to prediction technologies for ship vibration and noise. In particular, the resonance and lock-in phenomena caused by vortex-induced vibration (VIV) have become considerably important with increases in the speed and the size of ships and ocean structures, which are known to cause structural problems. This study extends the fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis method to predict resonances and lock-in phenomena of high modes and VIV of ship rudders. Numerical stability is secured in underwater conditions by implementing added mass, added damping, and added stiffness by applying the potential theory to structural analysis. An expanded governing equation is developed by implementing displacements and twist angles of high modes. The lock-in velocity range and resonant frequencies of ship rudders obtained using the developed FSI method agree well with the experimental results and the analytic solution. A comparison with local vibration guidelines published by Lloyd's Register shows that predictions of resonances and lock-in phenomena of high modes are necessary in the shipbuilding industry due to the possible risks like fatigue failure.

Ship structure is composed of the welded mixture members which are plate and stiffeners. Ship structure is also influenced by variable loadings such as wave and inertia load. There have been several fatigue damage problems on the connection between longitudinal and transverse web due to wide usage of high tensile steel and adoption of wide web space to improve shipbuilding productivity. It is impossible to estimate the fatigue lives for all connection details through refined fatigue analysis. It is necessary to use the simplified approach for the fatigue life estimation of the connection details. PLUS analysis, which is suggested by the classification society, is one of the simplified approaches and is widely adopted to get fatigue lives for the connection details along whole cargo hold area. However, ship building yards still have difficulties to get fatigue lives due to large amount of calculation and time even if this approach reduce the time and amount of calculation. This paper treats the computing system developed to reduce efforts of estimating the fatigue lives. The influence factors of mean shear stress and local dynamic pressure are easily calculated and fatigue lives for all hot spots can be estimated automatically by the developed computing system. It is possible to reduce computing time and efforts to get the fatigue lives for the connection details between longitudinals and transverse webs along the ship. This system was applied to get fatigue lives on the connection details of a VLCC and verified the availability.
The paper is devoted to study a mesh-free analysis method of structural elements of engineering structures based on B-spline Wavelet Basis Function. First, by employing the moving-least square method and the weighted residual method to solve the structural displacement field, the control equations and the stiffness equations are obtained. And then constructs the displacement field of the structure by using the m-order B-spline wavelet basis function as a weight function. In the end, the paper selects the plane beam structure and the structure with opening hole to carry out numerical analysis of deformation and stress. The Finite Element Method calculation results are compared with the results of the method proposed, and the calculation results of the relative error norm is compared with Gauss weight function as weight function. Therefore, the clarification verified the validity and accuracy of the proposed method.
A very large shell-structure built in shipyards like ship hulls or offshore structures are joined by welding through full process. As the welding contains a high thermal cycle at a local area, the welded structures should be distorted unavoidably. Because a distorted ship block should be revised to the designed value before the next stage, the ability to predict and to control the weld distortion is an accuracy level of the yard itself. Despite the ship block size, several present thermal distortion methodologies can deal those sizes, but it is a different story to deal full ship size model. Even a fully constructed ship hull not remaining any welding can have an accuracy issue like outfitting installation problems. Any present thermal distortion methodology cannot accept this size for its recommended element size and the number. The ordinary welding breadth at erection stage is about 20~40 mm. It can hardly be a good choice to make finite element model of these sizes considering human effort and computational environment. The finite element model for structure analysis of a ship hull is prepared at front-end engineering design stage which is the first process of the project. The element size of the model is as fine as the longitudinal space, and it is not proper to obtain a weld distortion at the erection stage. In this study, a methodology is suggested that a weldment can be shrunk at original place instead of using structural finite element model. We cut the original shell elements at erection weld-line and put truss elements between the edges of cut elements for weld shrinkage. Additional truss elements are used to facsimile transverse weld shrinkage which cannot be from the weld-line truss element shrink. They attach to weld-line truss element like twigs from barks. The capacity of developed elements is verified through an accuracy check of erection process of a container vessel at the apt. hull. It can be a useful tool for verifying a centering accuracy after renew and for block-separating planning considering accuracy.

In this paper, some theoretical equations are derived to calculate natural frequencies and their modes of a portal type derrick system and developed a computer program to carry out their calculations. The ship's structures, such as funnels, upper decks, engine structures, shaft systems suffer local vibrations of the ship. The exciting forces of vibrations are induced by the bearing force and the surface force of propeller or by the main engine. For solving the vibration problem of riggings like the derrick system the natural frequency of its system must be exactly estimated as far as possible and its resonance condition must be kept out of the normal engine operating speed range. When some severe resonances are encountered after the ship's launching, it may be required a tremendous cost to amend their condition. An experimental model of the portal type derrick is made, which is composed of two posts and a truss. This experimental model is excited by an electrical-magnet, and its vibration responses are found out. The calculating results of the model by the developed computer program are compared with those of measured values of model experiment, and they show fairly good agreements.
