  • Steel conical shells have long been used in various parts of different structures. Sensitivity to the initial geometrical imperfection has been one of the most significant issues on the stability of these structures, which has made them highly vulnerable to the buckling. Most attention has been devoted to structures under normal fabrication related imperfections. Notwithstanding, the challenges of large local imperfections - presented herein as dent-shaped imperfections - have not been a focus yet for these structures. This study aims to provide experimental data on the effect of such imperfections on the buckling capacity of these shells under axial compression. The results show changes in the buckling mode and the capacity for such damaged thin specimens as is outlined in this paper, with an average overall capacity reduction of 11%.

  • This study investigated the characteristics of bifurcation and the instability due to the initial imperfection of the space truss, which is sensitive to the initial conditions, and the calculated buckling load by the analysis of Eigen-values and the determinant of tangential stiffness. A two-free nodes model, a star dome, and a three-ring dome model were selected as case studies in order to examine the unstable phenomenon due to the sensitivity to Eigen mode, and the influence of the rise-span ratio and the load parameter on the buckling load were analyzed. The sensitivity to the imperfection of the two-free nodes model changed the critical path after reaching the limit point through the bifurcation mode, and the buckling load level was reduced by the increase in the amount of imperfection. The two sensitive buckling patterns for the model can be explained by investigating the displaced position of the free node, and the asymmetric Eigen mode was a major influence on the unstable behavior due to the initial imperfection. The sensitive mode was similar to the in-extensional mechanism basis of the simplified model. Since the rise-span ratio was higher, the effect of local buckling is more prominent than the global buckling in the star dome, and bifurcation on the equilibrium path occurring as the value of the load parameter was higher. Additionally, the buckling load levels of the star dome and the three-ring model were about 50-70% and 80-90% of the limit point, respectively.

  • This paper describes the collapse characteristics of the rectangular tube under eccentric compressive load. Overall buckling stress and bifurcation criterion (slenderness ration)are investigated. modified secant formula(MSF) is proposed to decide overall buckling stress. The bifurcation criterion which can distinguish between the local and overall buckling mode shapes is suggest by equating the local and overall buckling stresses. Additionally the effect of initial imperfection on bifurcation criterion is investigated.

  • Elastic and nonlinear ultimate strength analyses were conducted to examine the effects of the stiffness and slenderness of flat-type stiffeners on ultimate in-plane strengths of a stiffened plate system. Although it is not feasible to consider local buckling in the stiffeners in elastic analysis, it was confirmed that the in-plane strengths of the stiffened plate system can be achieved by antisymmetric buckling mode when a certain level of stiffness in the stiffeners is provided. Nonlinear ultimate strength analysis, in which initial imperfection and residual stress are incorporated, showed that the ultimate strengths are sensitively affected by the mode shapes for initial imperfections. The slenderness limit for flat-type stiffeners in KHBDC (Korean Highway Bridge Design Code) was evaluated as conservative compared to the analysis results.

  • Notwithstanding a considerable body of references in the literature on the buckling response of conical shell structures, it seems imperative to provide further insight on the buckling response of locally imperfect steel cones. This paper contains different simulations including non-linear FE analysis and discusses the influence of dent imperfection on the buckling load of these structures subject to external pressure. Data of the present work are evaluated against available experimental results, codes and recommendations and the effect of the local damages is exhaustively set forth. It is also found that the employed FE program can reliably predict the structural response of locally damaged conical shells.

  • This paper studies on the instability behaviour of the Seoul southwest baseball dome. The nonlinear Snapping phenomenon of the structure is investigated about the load mode by the design load of analysis structure and these combined loads. The initial imperfection obtains the buckling mode through the eigenvalue analysis of the tangential stiffness matrix and uses this for the nonlinear analysis. However, the buckling of members or the local buckling, and etc don't consider in the research range of this research task. Also it is limited the overall buckling phenomenon.

  • Developed in this study were Octagonal-hollow-section(OHS) struts, whose compressive strengths against flexural and local buckling is higher than H-shape or rectangular-hollow-section(RHS) struts with the same unit weight. OHS members are also advantageous in handling and storing compared to circular hollow sections(CHS). OHS members were fabricated from HR Plates by cold forming and fillet welding. 5 numbers of 20m long OHS struts were assembled, each of which consist of two 9.6m long OHS member and two end connection elements made of cast iron. The compressive strength of the OHS strut was evaluated by comparing the test results, design codes and FEM analysis each other. Test results show that all of the struts have almost same or larger compressive strength than Korean Road Bridge Design Code(KRBDC) (2012). The initial imperfections can be estimated by using measured strains and are turned out to be less than L/450 for all the struts tested. The results of FEM analysis show that the variation of initial imperfection has less effects on the compressive strength for struts with vertical surcharge than for those with self-weight only, while the strength decreases as the initial imperfection increases. As the result of this study, the allowable initial imperfection for 20m long OHS struts is recommended to be less than L/350 on job sites.

  • An experimental and analytical investigation is performed to study the buckling behavior of composite laminates with an embedded delamination. It is of particular interest to veryfy whether delamination growth cddurs with continuming deformation after buckling of composite laminates with an embedded delamination. Experiments are conducted for [0/sub 4///90/sub 8//0/sub 4/]/sub r/ laminates with delamination size in which local buckling mode governs buckling. Results show that delamination growth occurs in hgigher load after buckling and is accompanid by other damage mechanisms such as splitting. Also, it is found that transverse deformation before difurcation buckling is due to initial imperfection and structure such as plate with small bending stiffness is sensitive to that.

  • In this study, the local buckling behavior of steel built-up columns, fabricated with grade 800MPa high performance (HSA800), was investigated to verify the suitability of width-to-thickness ratio limits adopted by the current design code. For this purpose, an experimental program was designed and performed for HSA800 steel column specimens with various width-to-thickness ratios. Then the experimental results were compared and verified with finite element analysis results. The parametric analytical studies with various width-to-thickness ratios were also performed to investigate the missing data from the limited experimental studies. From the experimental and analytical studies, It was found that the finite analysis models could reasonably estimate the test results within the 5.3% average differences. The local buckling behaviors of HSA800 steel columns were found to be largely depend on the values of initial imperfection introduced into finite element analyses.

  • The local buckling strength and post-local buckling strength of thin steel plates in the steel-concrete composite column were evaluated by nonlinear finite element analyses. The proposed width-to-thickness limit ratio was based on elastic buckling analyses, in which the increased local buckling capacity of the plate due to the in-filled concrete was considered by the boundary conditions of the thin plate. Considering the initial imperfections and residual stresses, we determined the initial local buckling strength and post-local buckling strength of the thin plates with various width-to-thickness ratios. The formula to evaluate the compressive capacity of the steel-concrete composite column based on the effective width of the plate was proposed. For verification, values determined by the formula were compared with the experimental results.
