This study applied long-term wind speed data from Penghu and Dongjidao weather stations to simulate the wind energy production for eight onshore and one offshore wind farms at Penghu Island, Taiwan by a commercial software package, Wind Atlas Application Program (WAsP). In addition, the RET Screen software suite was also applied to analyze economic characteristics of these nine wind farms (WFs). The results show that the capacity factors (CFs) of the nine wind farms mentioned above are in the range of 44.5% to 49.1%. In addition, utilizing 1.8-MW wind turbines (WTs) for all onshore WFs was the most feasible selection among the four potential types of WTs (600, 900, 1,800 and 3,600 kW) considered. 3-MW WTs selected for the offshore WF can produce the most wind energy and the smallest wake loss among the three possible types of WTs (1, 2 and 3MW). As a consequence of implementing these WFs, the emission of about 680,977 tons carbon dioxide ($tCO_2$) into the local atmosphere in Penghu Island annually could be avoided. Finally, based on the payback periods achieved, the order of implementation of the considered WFs can be identified more clearly. Longmen WF should be the first priority, and the next one should be SiyuWF and so on. Besides, this study provides much useful information for WF planning on Penghu Island.
An experimental study on critical heat flux (CHF) has been performed in an internally heated vertical annulus with non-uniform heating. The CHF data for the chopped cosine heat flux have been compared with those for uniform heat flux obtained from the previous study of the authors, in order to investigate the effect of axial heat flux distribution on CHF. The local CHF with the parameters such as mass flux and critical quality shows an irregular behavior. However, the total critical power with mass flux and the average CHF with critical quality are represented by a unique curve without the irregularity. The effect of the heat flux distribution on CHF is large at low pressure conditions but becomes rapidly smaller as the pressure increases. The relationship between the critical quality and the boiling length is represented by a single curve, independent of the axial heat flux distribution. For non-uniform axial heat flux distribution, the prediction results from Doerffer et al.'s and Bowling's CHF correlations have considerably large errors, compared to the prediction for uniform heat flux distribution.
Normally, PV system is designed using local weather condition like lowest and highest temperature and irradiance. But this might give misleading results because it is not realistic data of PV module itself. To give more specific description of PV system, we tested photovoltaic(PV) modules' temperature, irradiance and maximum power generation characteristics from January to December in 2008 for 3kW PV system. From this, we could deeply analyze the accumulation temperature, electrical characteristics of PV module in various condition. So precise approach to PV system design can be done. The detail description is specified as the following paper.
The plasma density distribution in between the electrode and lateral wall of a narrow gap CCP was investigated. The plasma density distribution was obtained using single Langmuir probe, having two peaks of density distribution at the center of electrode and at the peripheral area of electrodes. The plasma density distribution was compared with the RF fluctuation of plasma potential taken from capacitive probe. Ionization reactions obtained from numerical analysis using CFD-$ACE^+$ fluid model based code. The peaks in two region for plasma density and voltage fluctuation have similar spatial distribution according to input power. It was found that plasma density distribution between the electrode and the lateral wall is closely related with the local ionization.

Thin client computing trades local processing for network bandwidth consumption by offloading application logic to remote servers. User input and display updates are exchanged between client and server through a thin client protocol. On wireless devices, the thin client protocol traffic can lead to a significantly higher power consumption of the radio interface. In this article, a cross-layer framework is presented that transitions the wireless network interface card (WNIC) to the energy-conserving sleep mode when no traffic from the server is expected. The approach is validated for different wireless channel conditions, such as path loss and available bandwidth, as well as for different network roundtrip time values. Using this cross-layer algorithm for sample scenario with a remote text editor, and through experiments based on actual user traces, a reduction of the WNIC energy consumption of up to 36.82% is obtained, without degrading the application's reactivity.
Increasing numbers of photovoltaic arrays are being connected to the power utility through the power conditioning systems (PCS). This has raised potential problems of network protection. If, due to the action of the PCS, the local network voltage and frequency remain within regulatory limits when the utility is disconnected, then islanding is said to occur. In this paper, the representative methods to prevent the islanding are described and a PSIM-based model and analysis of the reactive power variation (RPV) method are presented. A novel phase detector using the all-pass filter and digital phase locked loop (DPLL) is proposed especially for the single-phase PCS. Finally, this paper provides the simulation and experimental results with a single-phase 3kW prototype PCS. Islanding test method of IEEE Std. 929-2000 was performed for verification.
Effort to reduce energy consumptions or CO2 emissions is global trend. To follow this trend, spatial studies related to characteristics affecting energy consumptions or CO2 emissions have been conducted, but only with the focus on spatial dependence, not on spatial heterogeneity. The aim of this study is to investigate spatial heterogeneity patterns of CO2 emission based on socio-economic factors, land-use characteristics and traffic infrastructure of Seoul city. Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) analysis was performed with 423 administrative district data in Seoul. The results suggest that population and employment densities, road density and railway length in most districts are found to have positive impact on the CO2 emissions. Residential and green area densities also have the highest positive impact on CO2 emissions in most districts of Gangnam-gu. The resulting model can be used to identify the spatial patterns of CO2 emissions at district level in Seoul. Eventually it can contribute to local energy policy and planning of metropolitan area.
The rapidly growing global population increases the awareness of water, energy, and food security worldwide. The concept of Water, Energy, and Food nexus (hereafter, WEF nexus) has been widely introduced as a new resources management concept that integrate the water, energy, and food in a single management framework. Recently, WEF nexus analyzes not only the interconnections among the resources, but also considers the external factors (such as environment, climate change, policy, finance, etc) to enhance the resources sustainability by proper understanding of their relations. A nation-level resources management is quite complex task since multiple regions (e.g., watersheds, cities, and counties) with different characteristics are spatially interconnected and transfer the resources each other. This study proposes a multiple region WEF nexus simulation and transfer model. The model is equipped with three simulation modules, such as local nexus simulation module, regional resources transfer module, and optimal investment planning module. The model intends to determine an optimal capital investment plan (CIP), such as build-up of power plants, water/waste water treatment plants, farmland development and to determine W-E-F import/export decisions among areas. The objective is to maximize overall resources sustainability while minimize financial cost. For demonstration, the proposed model is applied to a semi-hypothetical study area with three different characterized cities. It is expected the model can be used as a decision support tool for a long-term resources management planning process.
Three small-break loss-of-coolant accident (SBLOCA) tests with safety injection pumps were carried out using the integral-effect test loop for SMART (System-integrated Modular Advanced ReacTor), i.e., the SMART-ITL facility. The types of break are a safety injection system line break, shutdown cooling system line break, and pressurizer safety valve line break. The thermal-hydraulic phenomena show a traditional behavior to decrease the temperature and pressure whereas the local phenomena are slightly different during the early stage of the transient after a break simulation. A safety injection using a high-pressure pump effectively cools down and recovers the inventory of a reactor coolant system. The global trends show reproducible results for an SBLOCA scenario with three different break locations. It was confirmed that the safety injection system is robustly safe enough to protect from a core uncovery.
This paper is a study on the thermal design of printed circuit heat exchanger (PCHE) to supply cryogenic high pressure liquid hydrogen stored from hydrogen liquefaction process by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This PCHE should be thermally designed to raise the temperature of cryogenic liquid hydrogen to a desired temperature and also to be anti-icing to avoid any local freezing in hot channel. This research presents the effect of inlet velocity and inlet temperature of hydrogen, and the effect of flow configurations of co/counter-flow on thermal design of PCHE heat exchanger based on various CFD simulation analysis.
