Bank Capital Adequacy Ratio and Bank Performance in Vietnam: A Simultaneous Equations Framework

  • Playing an important role in developing the economy and overall developments of the country, commercial banks have to be aware of their crucial presence in order to perform well and contribute significantly. At the same time, as a place to receive deposits, banks are required to be in safe situations to avoid bankruptcy or deal with financial crises. This research seeks to identify the determinants of Capital Adequacy Ratio and Banks' performance as well as the relationship between these two dependent variables. The paper uses 128 observations of 16 Vietnamese commercial banks during the period from 2010 to 2017, with two simultaneous dependent variables CAR and ROE, and independent variables including Return on Assets, Tobin Q, Credit growth, GDP growth, Equity to Deposits, Loans to Deposits, Bank size, Cost to Income, Liquidity risk, Provision for Loan loss ratio, Non-performing loans and Inflation. The results reveal that Capital Adequacy Ratio and Banks' Performance have statistically significant relationship and Credit growth, GDP growth, Equity-to-Deposit ratio and Cost-to-Income ratio all have significant effects on two dependent variables. The findings of this study suggest that commercial banks should control the respective elements in order to maintain adequate level of capital and also create effective performance.

Analysis of Financial Ratio Change in Self-Employed Households with Economy Depression -A Comparison between year of 1997 and 1998- (경기불황에 따른 자영업가구의 재정비율의 변화분석 -1997년 대비 1998년의 재정비율분석 비교-)

  • This study analyzed the financial ratio change of self-employed households between 1997 and 1998. The data were drawn from Korean Households Panel Study and utilitze7 descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentile to investigate the differences between two period of time, 1997 and 1998. The sampe size in 1997 was 692 householdsand and 600 households in 1998. The mean of financial asset showed that in 1997, self-employed households had much less in liquidity assets, especially in bank-related income, stock, but had more in real-estate, Gye, and private loan than those in 1998. In cases of debt-owned, the self-employed tended to have more debt in non-bank related and it illustrates that the self-employed may experience the difficulties to access the financial assistance in economic depression. Using guideline of each ratios, for six financial ratios, self-employed could meet less proper level$ in 1998 compared to those in 1997. It proves that the economic crisis affect the stability of income and financial assets of self-employed households and types of financial assets changes because of the stability.

A Study on the Archives Management of $Chos\v{o}n-chongdokbu$ (일제 조선총독부의 문서관리에 관한 연구)

  • Government archives are basic source materials in the historical study. Whereas, researches on the archives of Choson-chongdokbu have been very scant. Those archives contain information about both colonism of Japan and independent movement of Korea are comparatively well preserved at Government Archives and Record Services. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the characteristic of archives and to evaluate the system of archival management of Choson-chongdokbu. Based on the official gazette and archives of Choson-chongdokbu, this study has revealed the division of archival work, the writing and treatment of official document, compilation and preservation, and the procedure of use and destruction. As a result of the research, the followings have been identified; 1. Archival regulations were prepared by the instructions of Choson­chongdokbu at the early days of its establishment. Inspite of several revisions, its basis was maintained until 1945. 2. Each agency had its own archival department instead of central archives. 3. The archival department of Choson-chongdokbu controlled the archival administration of headquarters and attached agencies. But the secret archives were managed by the secretarial department. 4. The writing and treatment of archives were done by the archival regulation made in 1911. 5. Each agency had set more or less different preservation period. 6. There were three ways of using archives, 1) the in-house reading 2) the loan 3) the transcriptions. The archives passed the preservation period were destroyed in accordance with the related departments.

  • As the government announced Real Estate Policies on August 02, most areas except for Seoul cities face increasing business risks. Moreover, the government control over financial sectors' loan leads to the highly possible contraction of new distribution markets. The market trend could bring about the reduction of new demand in PF (Private Financing) business that large construction companies mainly concentrate on, and even the business already obtained has a high risk of being distributed, which could result in substantially low profitability. The currently unstable financial structure of most construction companies is caused by the hike of the prime cost of foreign plants except for that of a few construction companies. If PF (Private Financing) business also faces a difficult situation in such a financial condition, even large construction companies come to have the high possibility of a deficiency in credit rating. Accordingly, the major business that large construction companies concentrate on needs the sufficient business review. It is desirable to make a bid for business guaranteeing stability rather than business solely in consideration of profitability, when participating in a competition for a new construction contract.

  • Building remodeling concept includes maintenance & repair and renovation. We have long-term repair plan and special repair fund system for the apartment maintenance & repair, but they do not operate well. And laws and ordinances are being revised in relation with renovation. However, more policy improvement and assistance are needed in order to activate the apartment remodeling project. Especially preferential loan and tax reduction policy and deregulation of building provisions are the main tasks for the apartment remodeling.

  • With the advent of the digital era, even thought the configuration and the importance of library resources have changed, still only traditional library resources of the past have been used to measure the effectiveness of university libraries. To overcome these limits, this study purposed to redefine the library resources factors for the evaluation of the library effectiveness as appropriate standards in digital library era. The survey method was used, the result follows. Budget, librarians, space, books, periodicals, e-journals, non-book materials, Web DB, e-book, computers are selected as input resources elements, while loan books, users, website visits, web DB uses are selected as output resoures elements. It could be noticeable that the elements related to the electronic resources was reidentified quiet a lot.

대학도서관의 복본수 결정기법에 관한 연구

  • This study is designed to review the methods of duplicate copies decision making in the academic library. In this thesis, I surveyed queueing & markov model, statistical model, and simulation model. The contents of the study can be summarized as follows: 1) Queueing and markov model is used for one of duplicate copies decision-making methods. This model was suggested by Leimkuler, Morse, and Chen, etc. Leimkuler proposed growth model, storage model, and availability model through using system analysis method. Queueing theory is a n.0, pplied to Leimkuler's availability model. Morse ad Chen a n.0, pplied queueing and markov model to their theory. They used queueing theory for measuring satisfaction level and Markov model for predicting user demand. 2) Another model of duplicate copies decision-making methods is statistical model. This model is suggested by Grant and Sohn, Jung Pyo. Grant suggested a model with a formula to satisfy the user demand more than 95%, Sohn, Jung Pyo suggested a model with two formulars: one for duplicate copies decision-making by using standard deviation and the other for duplicate copies predicting by using coefficient of variation. 3) Simulation model is used for one of duplicate copies decision-making methods. This model is suggested by Buckland and Arms. Buckland considered both loan period and duplicate copies simultaneously in his simulation model. Arms suggested computer-simulation model as one of duplicate copies decision-making methods. These methods can help improve the efficiency of collection development and solve some problems (space, staff, budget, etc, ) of Korean academic libraries today.

The Plan for Activating Collection Services of Public Library in Seoul Metropolitan (서울시 공공도서관 자료서비스 활성화 방안)

  • The goal of this study is to propose the plan for activating collection services of public library in Seoul. For this goal, author analyzed and compared the core infrastructure, collection services, and their correlation of public libraries in 16 local governments and evaluated environment and the current situation of collection service of public libraries in Seoul. Based on the these results, author suggested five plans or strategies for vitalizing the collection services of public libraries. All public libraries in Seoul must maximize the visibility of the new collections, supply the culture(life-long learning) programs based on library collections, expand the breadth of the collection service through library cooperation system, strengthen interlibrary loan by establishment of the collaborative repository, and raise the awareness of the citizens about the library and collections.

Data Envelopment and Classification Model for Efficiency Analysis of Information Technology Promotion Fund (DEA와 로지스틱 회귀분석을 이용한 정보화촉진기금 융자사업의 효율성 분석)

  • The relative efficiency of loan projects of information technology promotion fund is measured using Data Envelopment Analysis. Information technology promotion project is supervised by the Ministry of Information and Communication and is managed by the Institute of Information Technology Assessment. Among all the projects of information technology supported by this fund, this study deals with the themes that have been completed from 2000 to 2002. With multiple input and output data including the amount of fund, the period of study, the rate of increase in revenue, the increase in the amount of export and the increase in the number of patent, the relative efficiency scores of all the 119 subjects were calculated in CCR and BCC models of DEA. From the reference sets of some inefficient Decision Making Units, the causes of their inefficiency were analyzed. To compare the relative efficiencies among various DMUs, Super-Efficiency Ranking Method and Logistic Regression Model were used. As the result of this study, it was shown that W promotion funds in the fields related to mobile technology, visual equipment and communication device were used most efficiently.

Long-Term Projection of Demand for Reverse Mortgage Using the Bass Diffusion Model in Korea (Bass 확산모형을 활용한 국내 주택연금의 중·장기 수요예측)

  • Korea is expected to become a super-aged society by 2050. Given an aging population and the increasing pressure for the early retirement, a sufficient social safety net for elderly population becomes important. The Korean government introduced public reverse mortgage program in 2007, which is a product for aging seniors and the elderly, The number of reverse mortgage subscribers has also steadily grown. The demand continues to grow, but the reverse mortgage over a long period of time is a highly uncertain and risky product in the position of guarantee or lending institution. Thus, suitable demand prediction of the reverse mortgage subscribers is necessary for stable and sustainable operation. This study uses a Bass diffusion model to forecast the long-term demand for reverse mortgage and provides insight into reverse mortgage by forecasting demand for stability and substantiality of the loan product. We represent the projections of new subscribers on the basis of the data obtained from Korea Housing Finance Corporation. Results show that potential market size of Korean reverse mortgage reaches approximately 760,000-1,160,000 households by 2020. We validate the results by comparing the estimate of the cumulative number of subscribers with that found in literature.
