Human's landing strategies have been explained through lower extremity kinetics in various conditions. However, how lower extremity kinetics respond when the two conditions between a load and landing height are combined is not yet understood. To achieve the purpose of this study, a total of 20 men and women were subjected to drop landing according to a load(No load, 10%, 20%, 30% of the body weight) at various landing heights(0.3 m, 0.4 m, 0.5 m). As a result of the study, the main effect of a load was not statistically significant in all variables. But increasing of the landing heights showed more flexion angle which was statistically significant in knee joint. In addition, as the landing height increased, the medial-lateral, anterior-posterior, vertical force, and loading rate increased, while time to peak vertical force decreased which was statistically significant. Thus, humans can successfully perform the landing motion even if the load is changed at various heights. However, it reacted more sensitively to the change in landing height than that load condition. The landing height can be prepared for recognition and shock absorption through visual information, but the weight level is difficult for the body to perceive and explains why it is more difficult to apply it to the landing strategy mechanism for shock absorption.
SPLITT fractionation (SF) allows continuous (and thus a preparative scale) separation of micronsized particles into two size fractions ('fraction-a' and 'fraction-b'). SF is usually carried out in a thin rectangular channel with two inlets and two outlets, which is equipped with flow stream splitters at the inlet and the outlet of the channel, respectively. A new large scale splitter-less gravitational SF (GSF) system had been assembled, which was designed to eliminate the flow stream splitters and thus is operated by the full feed depletion (FFD) mode (FFD-GSF). In the FFD mode, there is only one inlet through which the sample is fed. There is no carrier liquid fed into the channel, and thus prevents the sample dilution. The effects of the sample-feeding flow rate, the channel thickness on the fractionation efficiency (FE, number % of particles that have the size predicted by theory) of FFD-GSF was investigated using industrial polyurethane (PU) latex beads. The carrier liquid was water containing 0.1% FL-70 (particle dispersing agent) and 0.02% sodium azide (used as bactericide). The sample loading rate was varied from about 4 to 7 L/hr with the sample concentration fixed at 0.01%. The GSF channel thickness was varied from 900 to $1300{\mu}m$. Particles exiting the GSF channel were collected and monitored by optical microscopy (OM). Sample recovery was monitored by collecting the fractionated particles on a $0.45{\mu}m$ membrane filter. It was found that FE of fraction-a was increased as the channel thickness increases, and FE of fraction-b was increased as the flow rate was increased. In all cases, the sample recovery has higher than 95%. It seems the new splitter-less FFD GSF system could become a useful tool for large scale separations of various types of micron-sized particles.
Bearing capacity of pile foundations in cold region is dominated by adfreeze bond strength between surrounding soil and pile perimeter. It denotes that adfreeze bond strength is the most important design parameter for foundations in cold region. Adfreeze bond strength is affected by various factors like 'soil type', 'frozen temperature', 'normal stress acting on soil/pile interface', 'loading rate', 'roughness of pile surface', etc. Several methods have already been proposed to estimate adfreeze bond strength during past 50 years. However, most methods have not considered the effect of normal stress for adfreeze bond strength. In this study, both freezing temperature and normal stress have been controlled as primary factors affecting adfreeze bond strength. A direct shear box was used to measure adfreeze bond strength between sand and aluminum under different temperature conditions. Based on the test results, the relation between shear strength of frozen sand and adfreeze bond strength have been investigated. The test results showed that both of shear strength and adfreeze bond strength tend to increase with decreasing frozen temperature or increasing confining pressure. The ratio of shear strength and adfreeze bond strength, expressed as $r_s$, decreased initially frozen section but increased at much lower frozen temperature and there were uniform intervals under the different normal stress conditions. A method for predicting adfreeze bond strength using $r_s$ has finally been proposed in this study.
Liquid-liquid extractions by use of microporous hollow fiber modules are fast compared with conventional extraction equipment because of the large surface area per volume. In these modules, the extractant and feed can be contacted at high speed and two flows are completely independent, so there are no problems with loading and channeling. In this paper, it was investigated the extraction selectivities for liquid-liquid extraction of Fe(II) and Ni(II) from dilute aqueous solution into TOA (tri-n-octylamine) and EHPNA (bis(2-ethylhexyle)hydrogenphosphite) as organic extractants by using the hydrophobic hollow fiber module. To determine the rate controlling step for mass transfer in hollow fibers, we also examined the effect of inside and outside flow rates of the hollow fiber module. From these experiments, we identified for the extraction of system with high partition coefficient in hydrophobic hollow fibers, mass transfer in the inside aqueous feed dominated the overall mass transfer, and in this paper, correlation between $K_w$ and $v_t$ was obtained as $K_w{\frac{d}{D}}=6.22\(\frac{d^2v_t}{LD}\)^{1/3}$ On the other hand, for the system with low partition coefficient, the resistance in the inside of hollow fibers was much less than membrane resistance because the extraction was not simple in the micropore. Thus, for systems with high partition coefficients, hydrophobic hollow fibers would be a better choice.
A beterotrophic Pseudomonas putida B2 was used to treat of hydrogen sulfide containing gas. The experimental approach involved operating two indentical bench-scale biofilters with media consisting of a mixture of peatmoss, perlite and granular activated carbon(GAC). One column was seeded with Pseudomonas putida B2 and the other was left unseeded. The biofilter was operated for 16 days under EBRT for 20-40 sec, at a temperature of 25-30$^{\circ}C$ and a hydrogen sulfide concentration of 40-190 ppm. The biofilter inocculated with P.putida B2 exhibited high hydrogen sulfide removal efficiency, average of 95%, at a gydrogen sulfide concentration of 40-190 ppm (flow rate 3.6 L/min). However, at a shock loading of 190 ppm the biofiter showed a removal efficiency of 78.9% and the control only showed a removal efficiency of 31.6%. The critical load of this biofilter was 14.83 g/㎥hr, and the critical load of the control column was 4.93 g/㎥hr. These results suggest that P. putida B2 has the potential to be used as a $H_2S$ removal agent in a biofilter.
In this study, the factors affecting commercialization of $Pt/TiO_2$ catalyst, which can oxidize HCHO at room temperature, was investigated. In order to determine the optimum noble metal loading, the catalytic activity was evaluated by varying the Pt loadings; the best catalytic activity was achieved for 1 wt% of Pt. In addition, the catalyst prepared under the reduction condition showed an excellent HCHO oxidation conversion at room temperature. Based on these results, it was confirmed that the activity could be changed by oxidation state of active metal, and in case of Pt, metallic Pt ($Pt^0$) species was more active on HCHO oxidation at room temperature. As a result of evaluating an effect of space velocity to determine the optimum operating condition, it was found that in the lower space velocity, conversion rate of HCHO was increased due to increase of catalyst bed. Catalytic activity was greater in the presence of moisture than in its absence. Through above results, the key factors for commercialization of oxidation catalyst, which was operated at room temperature even without any additional energy source was confirmed.

Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) was employed to qualify and quantify on survival, the injury rate and apoptosis of the human breast cancer cell line MCF-7 cells. MCF-7 cells were cultured in RPMI medium supplemented with 10% FCS in a 95% air and 5% CO2 atmosphere at 37$^{\circ}C$. For the viable cells preparation, cells were de-touched by 0.1% of trypsin treatment and washed with RPMI supplemented with 10% FCS medium by centrifugation at 1000 rpm for 3min. For the dead cells preparation, cells were de-touched by a cell scraper. The cells were counted by a hemacytometer, and the viability was estimated by the exclusion method with frypan blue dye. Each viable and dead cells were suspended in PBS (phosphate bufferred saline) or milk at the cell density desired. For the quantitative determination of cell death by measuring the LDH (lactate dehydrogenase) activity liberated from cells with cell membrane injuries, LDH-Cytotoxic Test Wako (Wako, Pure Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd., Japan) was used. We found that NIRS measurement of MCF-7 cells at the density range could evaluate and monitor the different characteristics of living cells and dead cells. The spectral analysis was performed in two wavelength ranges and with 1,4, 10 mm pathlength. Different spectral data pretreatment and chemometrics methods were used. We applied SIMCA classificator on spectral data of living and dead cells and obtained good accuracy when identifying each class. Bigger variation in the spectra of living cells with different concentrations was observed when compared to the same concentrations of dead cells. PLS was used to measure the number of cells in PBS. The best model for measurement of dead cells, as well as living cells, was developed when raw spectra in the 600-1098 nm region and 4 mm pathlength were used. Smoothing and second derivative spectral data pretreatment gave worst results. The analysis of PLS loading explained this result with the scatter effect found in the raw spectra and increased with the number of cells. Calibration for cell count in the 1100-2500 nm region showed to be very inaccurate.

Treatability tests were conducted to study the feasibility of EMMC process as a recycling-water treatment system in high density seawater aquaculture farm. To study the effect of organic and ammonia nitrogen loading rate on system performance, hydraulic retention time was reduced gradually from 12hr to 10min. The conclusions are can be summarized as follows. When the system HRT was reduced from 12hr to 2hr gradually, there was little noticeable change(reduction) in ammonia nitrogen removal efficiencies. However, removal efficiencies were decreased dramatically when the system was operated under the HRT of less than 2hr. In case of organics(COD), there was no dramatic change in removal efficiencies depending on HRT reduction. COD removal efficiencies were maintained successfully higher than 9% when the system was operated at tile HRT of 10 min. System performances depending on media packing ratio in the reactors were also evaluated. There were little differences in each reactor performances depending on media packing ratio in reactor when the reactors were operated under the HRT of longer than 1hr. However, differences in reactor performances were considerably evident when the reactors were operated under the HRT of shorter than 1hr. When comparing reactor performance among 25%, 50%,7 5% packed reactor, it can be judged that media packing ratio more than 50% plays no significant role in increasing reactor performance. For this reason, packing the media less than 50% is more reasonable way in view of economic. Such a tendency shown in COD removal efficiencies well agreed with the variation of ammonia-nitrogen removal efficiencies according to the media packing ratio in reactors at each HRT. Difference in effluent ammonia-nitrogen concentration between 50% media packing reactor and 75% media packing reactor was negligible. When comparing with the results of 25% packing reactor, difference was not so great.

The use of hydrodynamic separator is becoming increasingly popular for suspended solids reduction in urban storm runoff. This study is a laboratory investigation of the use of Vortex Screen to reduce the solids concentration of synthesized storm runoff. The synthesized storm runoff was made with water and addition of particles; manhole sediment, road sediment, fly ash, and ployvinyl chloride powder. Vortex Screen was made of acryl resin with 250 mm of diameter and height of 700 mm. To determine the removal efficiency for various influent concentrations of suspended solids (SS) and chemical oxygen demand (COD), tests were performed with different operational conditions. The samples were taken simultaneously at the influent storage tank and effluent tank, and measured SS and COD concentrations. The ranges of surface loading rate were 110 to 1,550 $m^3/m^2$/day, and influent SS concentrations were varied from 141 to 1,986 mg/L. This paper was intended to evaluate the effect of inlet baffle and the ratio of underflow to overflow ($Q_U/Q_O$) on particle separation efficiency for various particle size using Vortex Screen. It was found that when increase of $Q_U/Q_O$ from 10% to 20%, SS removal efficiency was increased about 6%. The range of SS and COD removal efficiencies of road sediment particle size 125<$d_p$<300 ${\mu}m$ were 68.0~81.0%, 53.1~71.9%, respectively. Results showed that SS removal efficiency with inlet baffle improved by about 10~20% compared without inlet baffle.

In case of retrofitting a concrete structure subjected to blast load by using retrofit materials such as FRP (fiber-reinforced polymer), appropriate ductility as well as raising stiffness must be obtained. But the previous approximate and simplified models, which have been generally used in the design and analysis of structures subjected to blast load, cannot accurately consider effects on retrofit materials. Problems on the accuracy and reliability of analysis results have also been pointed out. In addition, as the response of concrete and reinforcement on dynamic load is different from that on static load, it is not appropriate to use material properties defined in the previous static or quasi-static conditions to in calculating the response on the blast load. In this study, therefore, an accurate HFPB (high fidelity physics based) finite element analysis technique, which includes material models considering strength increase, and strain rate effect on blast load with very fast loading velocity, has been suggested using LS-DYNA, an explicit analysis program. Through the suggested analysis technique, the behavior on the blast load of retrofitted concrete walls using CFRP (carbon fiber-reinforced polymer) and GFRP (glass fiber-reinforced polymer) have been analyzed, and the retrofit capacity analysis has also been carried out by comparing with the analysis results of a wall without retrofit. As a result of the analysis, the retrofit capacity showing an approximate $26{\sim}28%$ reduction of maximum deflection, according to the retrofit, was confirmed, and it is judged ate suggested analysis technique can be effectively applicable in evaluating effectiveness of retrofit materials and techniques.
