Effect of position of hexagonal opening in concrete encased steel castellated beams under flexural loading

  • Castellated beams fabricated from standard I-sections are being used for several structural applications such as commercial and industrial buildings, multistory buildings, warehouses and portal frames in view of numerous advantages. The advantages include enhanced moment of inertia, stiffness, flexural resistance, reduction in weight of structure, by passing the used plate girders, the passage of service through the web openings etc. In the present study, experimental and numerical investigations were carried out on concrete encased steel castellated beams with hexagonal openings under flexural loading. Various positions of openings such as along the neutral axis, above the neutral axis and below the neutral axis were considered for the study. From the experimental findings, it has been observed that the load-carrying capacity of the castellated beam with web opening above neutral axis is found to be higher compared to other configurations. Nonlinear finite element analysis was performed by using general purpose finite element software ABAQUS considering the material nonlinearities. Concrete damage plasticity model was employed to model the nonlinearity of concrete and elasto-plastic model for steel. It has been observed that FE model could able to capture the behaviour of concrete encased steel castellated beams and the predicted values are in good agreement with the corresponding experimental values.

Optimal placement and tuning of multiple tuned mass dampers for suppressing multi-mode structural response

  • The optimal design of multiple tuned mass dampers (multiple TMD's) to suppress multi-mode structural response of beams and floor structures was investigated. A new method using a numerical optimizer, which can effectively handle a large number of design variables, was employed to search for both optimal placement and tuning of TMD's for these structures under wide-band loading. The first design problem considered was vibration control of a simple beam using 10 TMD's. The results confirmed that for structures with widelyspaced natural frequencies, multiple TMD's can be adequately designed by treating each structural vibration mode as an equivalent SDOF system. Next, the control of a beam structure with two closely-spaced natural frequencies was investigated. The results showed that the most effective multiple TMD's have their natural frequencies distributed over a range covering the two controlled structural frequencies and have low damping ratios. Moreover, a single TMD can also be made effective in controlling two modes with closely spaced frequencies by a newly identified control mechanism, but the effectiveness can be greatly impaired when the loading position changes. Finally, a realistic problem of a large floor structure with 5 closely spaced frequencies was presented. The acceleration responses at 5 positions on the floor excited by 3 wide-band forces were simultaneously suppressed using 10 TMD's. The obtained multiple TMD's were shown to be very effective and robust.

Utilization of the Stand-by Fuel Assemblies (예비 핵연료의 이용)

  • The change in the design-basis refueling strategy caused by the unexpected nuclear fuel failures may result in discharging intact fuel assemblies which were irradiated in the positions symmetric to the failed ones in addition to the failed ones in order to maintain the symmetric power shape in the reactor core. In this work an attempt is made to reuse the intact fuel assemblies which were discharged before reaching the design turnup in the above-described situation so as to improve the fuel utilization. The TDCORE code is used to estimate the flux and power distribution, and the RELOAD-II code for searching the optimal loading pattern with the minimum assembly radial power peaking factor. For the case of the Ko-ri unit 1, its third cycle turnup could be extended to 11,648 MWD/MTU by reusing the four low-burned fuel assemblies removed at the end of the first cycle, and then the loading pattern is searched to the equilibrium cycle.

Three-dimensional finite element modeling of a transverse top-down crack in asphalt concrete

  • In this paper, a four-layer road structure consisting of an edge transverse crack is simulated using three-dimensional finite element method in order to capture the influence of a single-axle wheel load on the crack propagation through the asphalt concrete layer. Different positions of the vehicular load relative to the cracked area are considered in the analyses. Linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) is used for investigating the effect of the traffic load on the behavior of a crack propagating within the asphalt concrete. The results obtained show that the crack front experiences all three modes of deformation i.e., mode I, mode II and mode III, and the corresponding stress intensity factors are highly affected by the crack geometry and the vehicle position. The results also show that for many loading situations, the contribution of shear deformation (due to mode II and mode III loading) is considerable.

Analysis of Microbial Communities in Biofilms from CSTR-Type Hollow Fiber Membrane Biofilm Reactors for Autotrophic Nitrification and Hydrogenotrophic Denitrification

  • Two hollow fiber membrane biofilm reactors (HF-MBfRs) were operated for autotrophic nitrification and hydrogenotrophic denitrification for over 300 days. Oxygen and hydrogen were supplied through the hollow fiber membrane for nitrification and denitrification, respectively. During the period, the nitrogen was removed with the efficiency of 82-97% for ammonium and 87-97% for nitrate and with the nitrogen removal load of 0.09-0.26 kg NH4+-N/m3/d and 0.10-0.21 kg NO3--N/m3/d, depending on hydraulic retention time variation by the two HF-MBfRs for autotrophic nitrification and hydrogenotrophic denitrification, respectively. Biofilms were collected from diverse topological positions in the reactors, each at different nitrogen loading rates, and the microbial communities were analyzed with partial 16S rRNA gene sequences in denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). Detected DGGE band sequences in the reactors were correlated with nitrification or denitrification. The profile of the DGGE bands depended on the NH4+ or NO3- loading rate, but it was hard to find a major strain affecting the nitrogen removal efficiency. Nitrospira-related phylum was detected in all biofilm samples from the nitrification reactors. Paracoccus sp. and Aquaspirillum sp., which are an autohydrogenotrophic bacterium and an oligotrophic denitrifier, respectively, were observed in the denitrification reactors. The distribution of microbial communities was relatively stable at different nitrogen loading rates, and DGGE analysis based on 16S rRNA (341f /534r) could successfully detect nitrate-oxidizing and hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria but not ammonium-oxidizing bacteria in the HF-MBfRs.

Effect of bite force on orthodontic mini-implants in the molar region: Finite element analysis

  • Objective: To examine the effect of bite force on the displacement and stress distribution of orthodontic mini-implants (OMIs) in the molar region according to placement site, insertion angle, and loading direction. Methods: Five finite element models were created using micro-computed tomography (microCT) images of the maxilla and mandible. OMIs were placed at one maxillary and two mandibular positions: between the maxillary second premolar and first molar, between the mandibular second premolar and first molar, and between the mandibular first and second molars. The OMIs were inserted at angles of $45^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ to the buccal surface of the cortical bone. A bite force of 25 kg was applied to the 10 occlusal contact points of the second premolar, first molar, and second molar. The loading directions were $0^{\circ}$, $5^{\circ}$, and $10^{\circ}$ to the long axis of the tooth. Results: With regard to placement site, the displacement and stress were greatest for the OMI placed between the mandibular first molar and second molar, and smallest for the OMI placed between the maxillary second premolar and first molar. In the mandibular molar region, the angled OMI showed slightly less displacement than the OMI placed at $90^{\circ}$. The maximum Von Mises stress increased with the inclination of the loading direction. Conclusions: These results suggest that placement of OMIs between the second premolar and first molar at $45^{\circ}$ to the cortical bone reduces the effect of bite force on OMIs.

Experimental Analysis of Curling Behavior of Concrete Slabs on Grade under Temperature Loading and Underlying Layers' Effects (지반위에 놓인 콘크리트 슬래브의 온도하중 하의 컬링 거동 및 하부층 영향 실험적 분석)

  • This study was conducted to analyze the curling behavior of concrete slabs on grade under temperature loading through the laboratory tests and to investigate the effects of the support conditions of underlying layers on the curling behavior of the slab on grade systems. For the laboratory tests, the concrete slabs were fabricated and the temperature measurement sensors were installed. The temperature loading was applied intentionally and the time histories of the vertical displacements of the slab at several different positions were measured. One-layered underlying layers were made using different materials and different thicknesses. Two-layered underlying layers were also made to have the same composite stiffness each other, but the material of the upper layer was designed to be different The experimental analysis results showed that the trend of the displacement time histories of the slab was basically the same as that of the temperature gradient time histories. The characteristics of the curling behavior of the slab were analyzed by separating the regions of curling up and curling down. The difference in the vertical displacements at the center and comer decreased as the stiffness of the underlying layer became larger, and the upper layer's material of the underlying layers affected the curling behavior of the slab.

Application of the Axiomatic Design Methodology to the Design of PBGA Package with Polyimide Coating Layer

  • The purposes of the paper are to apply the axiomatic design methodology to the design of PBGA package with polyimide coating under hygrothermal loading in the IR soldering process and to suggest more reliable design conditions by stress analysis. The analysis model is a 256-pin perimeter Plastic Ball Grid Array (PBGA) package with the polyimide coating surrounding chip and above surface of BT-substrate. The polyimide coating is suggested to depress the maximum stresses occurred on the stress concentration positions. The axiomatic design methodology is proved to be useful to find the more reliable design conditions for PBGA package. Finally, the optimal values of design variables to depress the stress in the PBGA package are obtained.

  • For dual-band operation, it can be done by loading two pair of narrow slots in the equilateral-triangular patch, one embedded close to the side edges of the patch and the other inserted at the bottom edge of the patch. The obtained two operating frequencies are of same polarization planes. The frequency ratio of the two operating frequencies is turnabled by varing the positions and lengths of the inserted slots at the bottom edge of the patch. In this paper, A single-feed equilateral-triangular microstrip patch with two pairs of narrow slot for dual-frequency operation is printed on the substrate(TMN-4 Rosers Co.) of the 60 miles. the antenna radiation characteristics are calculated by Ensemble ver. 5.0 software, and compared with the experimental results.

Case study on the reduction of airborne and structure-borne noise of a shipboard pump (함정탑재 펌프류 장비의 공기음/고체음 저감 사례 연구)

  • The reduction of airborne and structure-borne noise of a shipboard pump for a navel ship is very important because the noise levels of the pump must not exceed criteria such as MIL-STD. In this paper, several practical examples of reducing the noise levels are presented. The examples show that the inadequate rotor-balancing and shaft-alignment results in the increase of the structure-borne noise on all lower mounts. It is also found that the unequal loading on mounts can cause the dramatically increasing the noise levels on certain local positions. Since the piping system arrangement such as valve location, flexible joint, and elbow location affects on the noise measurement, care must be taken to minimize the unnecessary noise from the piping system.
