  • Self-leveling material(SLM) is one of the floor finishing materials which make flat surface like as water level by itself in a short time. So it is possible to increase construction speed and enhance economical efficiency In this study, author intended to develop SLM for the industrial warehouse and factory loading heavy weight machinery and vehicles. The demanded properties for this type of SLM are above 200mm of flow value and above 300kgf/$cm^2$ of 28-days compressive strength. To possess demended strength and fluidity, SLM have to be composed of many types of binders and chemical additives. So it is difficult to decide suitable mixing proportion of composition materials. In this study, author investigated the weight percentage effect of main composition materials for high-strength self-leveling material, by experimental design such as tables of orthogonal arrays and simplex design, and by statistical analysis such as analysis of variance and analysis of response surface. Variables of experiments were ordinary Portland cement(OPC), alumina cement(AC), anhydrous gypsum(AG), lime stone(LS) and sand, and properties of tests were fluidity of fresh state and strength of hardened state. Results of this study are showed that suitable mix proportions of binders for the high strength self-leveling materials are two groups. One is 78~85.5% OPC, 7.5~9.5% AC, 9~12.5% AG and the other is 72.5~78% OPC, 9~12.5% AC, 13~15% AG.

  • Asian dust evens took place in Seoul on 27~28 March and 31 March~1 April 2007, during which the mass and chemical compositions of $PM_{10}$ were measured at urban area in Seoul, Korea. In conjunction with $PM_{10}$ compositions, the behaviors of gas precursors such as CO, $O_3$, $SO_2$, and $NO_2$ and meteorological parameters and air mass trajectories were thoroughly examined. The earlier case was a weak dust incidence which was characterized by elevated concentrations of CO, $SO_2$ and $NO_2$ as well as secondary aerosols. In contrast, the later showed the trait of the dust aerosols associated with high $PM_{10}$ mass and $Ca^{2+}$ concentrations. In general, the fractions of ionic species against mass decreased with increase in dust loading. The ratios of ${SO_4}^{2-}$ to ${NO_3}^-$ and $SO_2$ to $NO_2$ were similar in temporal variations, suggesting the concentrations of secondary aerosols were sensitive to the level of precursor gases. In this study, $Na^+$ and $Cl^-$ were also highly elevated during the heavy dust episode, which is thought to have originated from alkaline soils spreading through the northeast regions of China.

  • The effects of the vertical component of a ground motion on the earthquake performances of semi-ductile high-rise R/C structures were investigated in the present study. Linear and non-linear time-history analyses were conducted on an existing in-service R/C building for the loading scenarios including and excluding the vertical component of the ground motion. The ratio of the vertical peak acceleration to the horizontal peak acceleration (V/H) of the ground motion was adopted as the main parameter of the study. Three different near-source earthquake records with varying V/H ratio were used in the analyses. The linear time-history analyses indicated that the incorporation of the vertical component of a ground motion into analyses greatly influences the vertical deflections of a structure and the overturning moments at its base. The lateral deflections, the angles of rotation and the base shear forces were influenced to a lesser extent. Considering the key indicators of vertical deflection and overturning moments determined from the linear time-history analysis, the non-linear analyses revealed that the changes in the forces and deformations of the structure with the inclusion of the vertical ground motion are resisted by the shear-walls. The performances and damage states of the beams were not affected by the vertical ground motion. The vertical ground motion component of earthquakes is markedly concluded to be considered for design and damage estimation of the vertical load-bearing elements of the shear-walls and columns.

  • This study explored the feasibility of utilizing an SWCNT-coated fabric sensor for the development of a wearable motion sensing device. The extent of variation in electric resistance of the sensor material was evaluated by varying the fiber composition of the SWCNT-coated base fabrics, attachment methods, number of layers, and sensor width and length. 32 sensors were fabricated by employing different combinations of these variables. Using a custom-built experimental jig, the amount of voltage change in a fabric sensor as a function of the length was measured as the fabric sensors underwent loading-unloading test with induced strains of 30 %, 40 %, and 50 % at a frequency of 0.5 Hz. First-step analysis revealed the following: characteristics of the strain-voltage curves of the fabric sensors confirmed that 14 out of 32 sensors were evaluated as more suitable for measuring human joint movement, as they yield stable resistance values under tension-release conditions; furthermore, significantly stable resistance values were observed at each level of strain. Secondly, we analyzed the averaged maximum, minimum, and standard deviations at various strain levels. From this analysis, it was determined that the two-layer sensor structure and welding attachment method contributed to the improvement of sensing accuracy.

  • It has been commonly assumed that during the 21st century, the korean peninsula may suffer huge earthquake damage to people, society, and economic system. The recent report of "Seoul Earthquake Response model development" conducted by the city of Seoul indicated that a magnitude 6.3 earthquake possibly hit Seoul, the capital of Korea. However, due to the insufficient amount of study on seismic performance of structures reflecting the various types of element peculiar to Korea application of the currently available earthquake damage evaluation methods has limitations. In order to conduct various studies on seismic hazards that are suitable for the actual conditions in Korea, therefore, fundamental studies first have to be properly conducted. The purpose of this study is to serve as the basis of establishing a reliable earthquake damage estimation system, and to provide essential data for the seismic damage evaluation of nonseismically reinforced concrete apartment structures. In this study, a standard type of nonseismically reinforced concrete apartments has been determined based on an extensive survey and careful review of such structures in Korea, and their performance level on seismic loading has been estimated.

  • Vitrification technology has been gradually recognized as one of effective solidification methods for concentrated boric acid wastes generated in PWR. Vitrification for low- and intermediate-level radioactive wastes has a large volume reduction and good durability for the final products. A feasibility study for the vitrification of concentrated boric acid wastes has been performed with developing the pre-treatment methods of powdered wastes, glass compositions using glass formulation and demonstration test. The pre-treatment method is pelletizing the powder type for stable feeding within cold crucible melter. The glass compositions should be developed considering molten glass are related with wastes reduction. High contents of sodium and boron within borate wastes give influence to waste loading. A variety of factors obtained from the demonstration test are reviewed, which is wastes feeding rate, off-gas characteristics on stack and glass characteristics of final products such as durability for implementing the wastes disposal requirement. The aim of this paper is to present the feasibility of vitrification and review the solidification method for concentrated boric acid wastes and obtain the physicochemical characteristics of solidified glass.

  • Korea Radioactive Waste Agency (KORAD) began to operate the low and intermediate level radioactive waste disposal facility in Gyeongju and to transport the radioactive waste containing radioactive isotopes from Daejeon to the disposal facility for the first time at 2015. For this radioactive waste transportation, in this study, radiological impact assessment is carried out for workers and public. The dose rate to workers and public during the transportation is estimated with consideration of the transportation scenarios and is compared with the Korean regulatory limit. The sensitivity analysis is carried out by considering both the variation of release ratios of the radioactive isotopes from the waste and the variation of the distances between the radioactive waste drum and worker during loading and unloading of radioactive waste. As for all the transportation scenarios, radiological impacts for workers and public have met the regulatory limits.

  • In the case of elevated railway station in which railway is connected with superstructure of station, vibration and noise level is relatively higher than those of general structure type station due to structural characteristic which transmits vibration directly. Therefore, characteristic understanding of structural vibration and accompanying structure cause noise and establishment of reduction plan through the results are in need. Test and analysis are performed in this research to consider correlativity between structural vibration and accompanying structure cause noise when external forces are applied on standard slab and floating slab which is able to isolate vibration. By producing and loading on standard and floating slab, vibration and noise response are measured while simulation using numerical analysis, finite element method and SEA method is performed. The results about structural dynamic behavior of slab, correlativity between structural vibration and noise, reduction performance of floating slab is deduced through the analysis of tests.

  • This study is performed to evaluate the physical and mechanical characteristics of an acryl polymer concrete that is developed as an overlay material for cement concrete slabs and pavements. Various laboratory tests including viscosity, flow, compressive strength, flexural strength, tensile strength, linear shrinkage, thermal expansion and thermal compatibility tests are performed. It is observed from the laboratory tests that the acryl polymer concrete developed in this study satisfies all the requirements suggested by ACI guideline. In addition to the laboratory tests, an accelerated performance testing (APT) is conducted to validate the performance of the acryl polymer concrete. During the APT, no significant distresses are observed until 15,903,939 cycles of equivalent single axle loading is applied. Finally, a 10mm thick overlay with the acryl polymer concrete is applied on top of an old deteriorated concrete pavement to evaluate field performance. Right after the field construction, skid resistance, noise and roughness are measured. The skid resistance and noise level have been significantly improved while the roughness is increased. Periodic investigation for the field study section will be conducted to evaluate the long-term performance.

  • The behaviors and stability of reinforced subgrade with short geogrid were examined and evaluated during construction. First of all, analytical approach for the minimum length of geogrid was performed to guarantee stability during construction loading state. Secondly, the economic aspects for reinforced subgrade were compared with between domestic standards applying with 0.7 H reinforcement length and new way to mix short and long reinforcement. Full scale railroad subgrade was constructed with the size of 5 m high, 6m wide, and 20m long to verify the stability of the subgrade with the length of 0.3 H, 0.35 H, 0.4 H reinforcement. Total 51 sensors were installed to measure settlement, bulging, and the change of stress of the subgrade. It is concluded that the reinforced subgrade with short(0.35H, 35% of height) geogrid had stability within allowable level of deformation and stress increment during construction.
