We found that the Bacterium Burkholderia cepacia in livestock wastewater treatment plant was predominant species. We investigated the growth rate of this and treatment characteristics for organic matter and nitrogen removal in livestock wastewater using this microorganism. First, we cultured B. cepacia. And then, to conducted treatment for livestock wastewater by using B. cepacia., we changed C/N from 0.2~4.4. When we operated A and B process, changing F/M ratio from 1.2 to 4.4. In experiment of C/N variations, when C/N was 1.8, we found that the optimal condition for organic matter and nutrient removal effect was higher and the removal efficiency of $SCOD_{cr}$, $SBOD_5$,$NH_4-N$ was 78.4%, 95% and 74.8%. So, It is possible to treat the wastewater having the lower C/N contents such as livestock wastewater using this microorganism. In experiment of A and B process for livestock wastewater, we found that the removal efficiency of organic matter and nitrogen in operating mode of A process was higher than that of B process. Also, the optimal F/M operating A process was 0.013 and the removal efficiency of $SBOD_5$, $SCOD_{cr}$, TN and TP were 97%, 60%, 95% and 91%.
An enrichment library of GATA-repeats from genomic DNA was constructed in this study to isolate and characterize microsatellite loci in Tsaiya duck (Anas platyrhynchos). Thirty-three microsatellite markers were developed and used to detect polymorphisms in 30 Tsaiya ducks. A total of 177 alleles were observed and all loci except APT022 were polymorphic. The number of alleles ranged from 2 to 9 with an average of 5.5 per microsatellite locus. The observed and expected heterozygosity of these polymorphic markers ranged from 0.07 to 0.93 with an average number of 0.60 and 0.10 to 0.86 with an average number of 0.61, respectively. Among the polymorphic markers, the observed heterozygosities of 23 loci were higher than 0.50 (69.70%). The polymorphism information content (PIC) in the 32 loci ranged from 0.09 to 0.83 with an average of 0.57. Seven of the 33 duck microsatellite loci had orthologs in the chicken genome, but only APT004 had a similar core repeat to chickens. These microsatellite markers will be useful in constructing a genetic linkage map for the duck and a comparative mapping with the chicken can also provide a valuable tool for studies related to biodiversity and population genetics in this duck species.
It's a case of the goat farm reared about 60 heads in Imsil county was outbreak Moniezia expensa infection. And 18 heads of less than 6 month olds goat were died. During the 2005 summer, morbidity and accumulative mortality were more than 60% and 30%, respectively less than 6 month young goat. Most young goat were suffer from diarrhea, severe weight losses, emaciations, and died. In necropsy, there were about 0.7-2.5m of 2-8 adult M expensa in the small intestinal lumen, swollen mesenteric lymph nodes. Slight hemorrhages were seen in lung and moderate hemorrhages were seen in mucous membrane of small intestine. Also various species (Trichostrongylus spp, Haemonchus spp, Eimeria spp) of parasite eggs were seen in fecal test. Pasteurella hemolytica was identified in lung by the API kit (Biomerieux Co. Ltd) for biochemical test. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) results, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, erythromycin, tyrosine, gentamycin, enrofloxacin, and norflocxacin were selected sensitive antibiotics.
This study is aimed to find out distribution status of online-market livestock products by purchasing and examining 120 cases of livestock products (seasoned meat: 17, 33 cases of packaged meat, 23 cases of ground meat, 19 cases of ham, 11 cases of sausage, 4 cases of bacon, 1 case of meat processing, 8 cases of Meat extract processed, and 4 cased of Dry storage of meat) at 17 On-line markets from April to August. 2015. We checked the weight of them first, and carried out ingredients test for each of processed meats. And we performed gene screening test on the products which were labelled 'Hanwoo' to investigate that the products were made of Korean native cattle. we also carried out test of identifying domestic animal species on ham, sausage and ground processed products. After weighing all products, we could know that all of them were delivered more than labelled weight or in allowable error. The result values of test which measured level of preservatives, Nitrite, Volatile Basic Nitrite (VBN), and tar Color by the type of processed meat products were in permissible range or not detected. Also, 17 beefs inspected Korean native cattle gene test were confirmed that they were made by real korean native cattle. But 2 cases of Ham, sausage, and ground processed products had difference between label and goods. In this study, we could make a decision that livestock products, distributed in On-line markets, were safe and expect to make higher degrees of hygiene for livestock products seller. Futhermore, we hoped result of this study could be used by basic data for progressive national policy decisions.

We have discovered Vicia grandiflora Scop., a newly invasive alien species in Baekun-ri, Okcheon-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, Korea. This species is native to regions from Central and Southeast Europe to Central Asia and Iran and is reported as an invasive species in North America and Japan. This species is similar to the Vicia sativa complex (V. sativa subsp. sativa, V. sativa subsp. nigra) but can be readily distinguished by the undivided ovate to semi-hastate stipules of the upper leaves, yellowish petals, large size of its flower, and elongated hilum. In the field, V. grandiflora grows in disturbed sites near cultivated land, suggesting that their seeds are typically transported by vehicles along with fertilizer or livestock feed. Here, we present the morphological description, photographs, and sites of V. grandiflora growth, which will be useful in guiding the management of this invasive alien plant.
Over the past decades, in vitro culture media have been developed to successfully support IVF embryo growth in a variety of species. Advanced reproductive technologies, such as somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT), challenge us with a new type of embryo, with special nutritional requirements and altered physiology under in vitro conditions. Numerous studies have successfully reconstructed cloned embryos of domestic animals for biomedical research and livestock production. However, studies evaluating suitable culture conditions for SCNT embryos in wildlife species are scarce (for both intra- and interspecies SCNT). Most of the existing studies derive from previous IVF work done in conventional domestic species. Extrapolation to non-domestic species presents significant challenges since we lack information on reproductive processes and embryo development in most wildlife species. Given the challenges in adapting culture media and conditions from IVF to SCNT embryos, developmental competence of SCNT embryos remains low. This review summarizes research efforts to tailor culture media to SCNT embryos and explore the different outcomes in diverse species. It will also consider how these culture media protocols have been extrapolated to wildlife species, most particularly using SCNT as a cutting-edge technical resource to assist in the preservation of endangered species.
Transgenic animals production tools have been valuable for research and purpose. The current methods of gene transfer, microinjection and nuclear transfer, which are widely used in transgenic animal production, but all most methods has only had limited success in production of larger species. Here, we report the possibility of a sperm-mediated gene transfer method in porcine embryos. Oocytes were collected from ovaries harvested at a local slaughterhouse were matured in 500${mu}ell$ drops of TCM-199 under mineral oil at 38.5$^{\circ}C$ in a humidified atmosphere of 5%CO2 in air. After 42-43h of in vitro maturation oocytes were denuded. for sperm injection into the cytoplasm of the porcine oocytes, sperm suspension in NIM medium are subjected extraction with TritonX-100 before mixing with a green fluorescent gene (GFP). Sperm with Tritonx-100 were prepared by adding TritonX-100 to a final volume of 0.05% in the sperm suspension and mixing by trituration for 60s before two wishes in NIM medium at 2$^{\circ}C$. A(ter wishing, sperm were mixed with TritonX-100 at $25^{\circ}C$ followed by washes at 2$^{\circ}C$. Sperm were resuspended in ice cold NIM to a final volume of 400${mu}ell$ and 2-20ng/${mu}ell$ DNA were triturated on ice for 60s. All microinjection was performed in HEPES-buffered CZB medium at room temperature within 2h. After culture in NCSU-23 for 72h, percent of porcine embryos transfected GFP gene are 20.7%(6/29) in 20ng/${mu}ell$ sperm-DNA mixed group and other groups were 3.7 %(2/54)and 4.7%(3/67). These data suggests that sperm-mediated gene transfer method should be used to the production tool of transgenic pig efficiently.
A significant proportion of the African continent is conducive for animal agricultural production, due to its historical experience and available resources to accommodate and nurture various indigenous and exotic animal species and breeds. With food security being a global challenge, animal products can play an important role as nutrient dense food sources in human diets, particularly in Africa. However, this does not seem to reach its full potential in practice, due to numerous reasons that have not been adequately addressed. Animal welfare reservations can be highlighted as one of the major contributing factors to the curbed progress. The consequences have been scientifically proven to affect product quality and market access. However, in the African community, the concept of animal welfare has not been fully embraced. While there are international animal welfare standards in the developed world, there are inherent factors that hinder adoption of such initiatives in most developing regions, particularly among communal farmers. These include cultural norms and practices, social ranking, socio-economic status, available resources, information dissemination and monitoring tools. Therefore, there is need to harmonize what is internationally required and what is feasible to accommodate global variability. The protocols followed to ensure and evaluate farm animal welfare require regular investigation, innovation and a sustainable approach to enhance animal productivity, efficiency and product quality. Additionally, investing in animal wellbeing and health, as well as empowering communities with significant knowledge, has a potential to improve African livelihoods and contribute to food security. This review seeks to highlight the concept of animal welfare in relation to livestock and food production in African conditions.
Bacteroiospermia is a frequently finding in fresh raw and extended porcine semen and can results in detrimental effects on semen quality and longevity. This study aims to evaluate the type of bacterial contaminants in raw and extended porcine semen and the reducing effect of antibiotic test. To investigate bacterial contaminants, out of 387 sample (raw semen 201, extended semen 186) were collected from 6 artifical insemination centers in Gyeongsangnam-do, were inoculated onto blood agar and MacKonkey agar, respectively. Bacterial colonies were selected after culturing for 48 hours, at $37^{\circ}C$, followed by Gram staining, KOH test, oxidase test, catalase test and eventually identified using VITEK System. Total 15 genus and 24 species of bacteria were isolated from these semen samlpes. In raw semen, the most prevalent contaminants were Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Staphylococcus auricularis, Delftia acidovorans, Acinetobacter lowffii, S. aureus and others. And in extended porcine semen, A. lowffii, S. aureus, S. auricularis and other bacteria were identified. Most of them was G(-), which is nonpathogenic bacteria. It seems that bacterial contaminants in fresh raw and extended porcine semen originated from multiple sources at the farms/stud, and were from animal origin and non-animal origins. Whereas, the 7 virus which is known to be detected in porcine semen in 75 cases was not detected. This results showed that removal of bacterial contamination in raw and extended porcine semen is essential and farms were kept for biosecurity and individual hygienes.
Toxoplasma gondii is a species of parasitic protozoa in the genus Toxoplasma. The definitive host of T. gondii is the cat, but the parasite can be carried by the vast majority of warm-blooded animals, including humans. It is often found in the tissues of food animals including pigs and sheep. To determine the regional prevalence of infection with T. gondii, bloods (n=300) from domestic pigs and tissues (n=200) from slaughter pigs in Gyeongnam province were tested using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for detection of antibody and antigen. A total of 115 sero-positive pigs were identified for a prevalence rate of 38.3%. Of the 50 herds from domestic pigs tested, 34 had at least one sero-positive pig for a herd prevalence rate of 68.0%. Sero-positive rates of pigs in fattening farm were higher than that of pigs in breeding company. Sero-positive rates of sows were higher than that of growing pigs. Seasonally, sero-positive rates of pigs were highest in winter (80.0%) and lowest in spring (23.8%). According to farm size, sero-positive rates of pigs were higher in small size farms (${\leq}$2,000) than that of big size farms (>2,000). However, none of the bloods (n=300) from domestic pigs and tissues (n=200) from slaughter pigs were positive for T. gondii specific DNA by PCR.
