  • Newly born lambs have to face challenges in a new environment totally different from that of the uterus. Adaptation to extra-uterine life involves functional changes with almost each organ and system in the body undergoing a series of metabolic and anatomical modifications. Failure to adapt the extra-uterine environment can not only lead to homeostatic disturbances but also lead to the death of the affected lambs. Hematological parameters of newly born lambs show variability that differs between breeds of lambs. The purpose of present study was to determine homeostatic responses and physiological reference values in Kajli breed lambs occurring in the neonatal period through changes in blood profile, respiratory rate, heart rate, live weight and rectal, scrotal and skin temperatures. For this purpose, sixteen clinically fit lambs (males = 10 and females = 6) with a mean body weight $6.92{\pm}0.46$ kg were selected. Physiological data of selected parameters of each Kajli lamb was recorded at three day intervals and hematological parameters at five days for a period of 30 days. In general, statistical analysis showed a significant effect of time (p<0.001) on all the studied physiological and hematological parameters except platelets counts, white blood cells and hemoglobin concentration. The results documented in the current study are an addition to existing knowledge of the physiology of Kajli sheep breed should be helpful in developing feeding, disease diagnoses and treatment protocols for newborn Kajli stock.

  • To determine the efficiency of copper (Cu) supplementation, a feeding experiment was carried out with 240 day old broiler chicks (vencobb-100). Birds were divided into four dietary treatments: i) C - no additives, ii) $T_1$-75 mg inclusion of Cu/kg diet, iii) $T_2$-150 mg inclusion of Cu/kg diet, iv) $T_3$-250 mg inclusion of Cu/kg diet. The present study was carried out in the Department of Animal Physiology, West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences, Kolkata, India for a period of 42 days (6 weeks). Growth performance was measured in terms of live weight gain, cumulative feed intake and feed conversion ratio at the end of $21^{st}$ and $42^{nd}$ day of the experiment and the result was found to be encouraging for commercial enterprises when the chickens were fed at 150 mg Cu/kg ($T_2$) of their diet. Excess dietary copper more than 150 mg/kg reduced the haemoglobin (Hb) concentration in blood and resulted in the accumulation of copper in the liver with decreased blood Hb concentration and packed cell volumes (PCV). Copper supplementation increased the total erythrocyte count (TEC) as copper is involved in erythropoiesis. But, from the result it is indicated that the dietary copper concentration could not alter the total leukocyte count (TLC). In case of different leucocytes count (DLC), there were no significant differences observed among the different treated groups. Statistical analysis showed significant (p<0.01) difference in plasma concentration of copper, zinc, ferrous and cholesterol among the different copper treated groups. The result indicates that supplementation of copper is an effective way of improving the production performance and haematological parameters in broiler chicken.

  • Background: Epidural steroid injections (ESI) are a common treatment for spinal disorders. Previous research has shown that aspiration of the syringe is not a sensitive test for placement of an intravascular needle. Serious complications have been reported from injection of steroids and local anesthetics into the vascular space. In addition to safety concerns, the efficacy may decline with partial injection outside the desired epidural location. We hypothesized that incidence of vascular problems is increased in patients who undergo spine surgery compared with the patients who don't undergo spine surgery. We investigated the incidence of vascular problems during lumbosacral transforaminal ESI and we compared the difference of vascular problems between the patients who undergo spinal surgery and those patients who don't undergo spinal surgery. Methods: Two hundreds and three patients were consecutively recruited and they received 299 fluoroscopically guided lumbosacral transforaminal ESIs. Injection of contrast was performed under live dynamic fluoroscopy with using digital substraction analysis. The observed uptake pattern was classified into one of three categories: flashback, aspirated, and positive contrast with negative flashback and aspiration. Results: The vascular incidence rate was 20.4%. Transforaminal ESIs performed at S1 had avascular incidence rate of 27.8% compared with 17.7% for all the other lumbar injection sites. The sensitivity of spontaneous observation of blood in the needle hub or blood aspirate for predicting an intravascular injection in lumbar transforaminal ESIs was 70.4%. Conclusions: There is a high incidence of intravascular problems when performing transforaminal ESIs, and this is significantly increased in patients with previous spine surgery. Using a flash or blood aspiration to predict an intravascular injection is not sensitive therefore; a negative flash or aspiration is not reliable. Fluoroscopically guided procedures without contrast confirmation are prone to instill medications intravascularly. This finding confirms the need for not only fluoroscopic guidance, but also for contrast injection instillation when performing lumbosacral transforaminal ESIs, and especially for patients with previous spine surgery.

  • It is widely known that pulsed magnetic field (PMF) is very useful tool to manipulate chemical and physiological processes in human body. The purpose of our study is to observe dynamics of rouleaux patterns of red blood cells (RBC) under PMF. The aggregation of RBCs or rouleaux formation is caused by fibrinogen in blood plasma. The maximum magnetic field intensity is 0.27 T and pulse time of 0.102 msec and pulse repetition rate was 1 Hz. PMF stimulus was applied to the palm of left hand for 5, 10, 15 and 20 min. Live blood analysis was used in vitro in order to quantitatively estimate the velocity of RBC exposed to PMF stimulus. The velocity of stacked-RBC of 10 minute PMF stimulus was increased up to $8{\times}10^{-4}m/sec$, but it decreased rapidly as the time passed. The results of present study have adduced that PMF stimulus on hand provide the improvement of RBC rouleaux formation, increase of RBC's moving velocity as well as low blood viscosity.

  • In an animals, identification system has been widely used by ear tag with dummy code and blood typing for parernity. Also, genotyping methods were using for useful mean of individual identification for live animals. In the case of genotyping estimation of gene in population of korean native chicken. In this study, we tested for development of genetic markers used it possible to determination of individual identification system. The candidate genetic markers were used already bow 10 of microstalite DNA sequence information in chromosome No. 1 and 14. Result of analysis for genotyping, the number of alleles of those microstatelites DNA was shown minimal 3 to 12 and the heterozygote expression frequency range was shown from 0.617 to 0.862. In our result, effective number of allele for each microsatellites DNA was shown 3~7, and the accuracy of individual identification was shown nearly 100%, when used with 6 genetic marker. This study was about genotyping method for identification used specific genetic marker form microsatellite DNA in the brand marketing of korean native chicken. Our results suggest that genotyping method used specific genetic marker from microsatellite DNA might be very useful for determination of individual identification.

  • Recently, the ratio of elderly in the population are fast growing due to socio-economical development and the better medical service. Proportionally, the health problems in elderly are increasing, too. Medical professionals must try so that the elderly have the better life through health promotion and disease prevention as well as disease treatment. This study evaluated the effect of walking exercise program on the cardiorespiratory function and the flexibility in the elderly women. The design of research was one group pretest-posttest design. The subjects were eleven elderly women over sixty years old to live in K-city, Kyonggi-do. The type of exercise was walking, which was the most popular exercise in questionnaire. The exercise intensity was 40%∼60% of the target heart-rate by Karvonen's method and maintained by the heart-rate monitor. The exercise period was five weeks and the exercise frequency was three times per week. The exercise duration was forty minutes at first and gradually increased up to an hour. In order to evaluate the effect of walking exercise, we measured VO/sub₂ max, resting heart -rate, systolic/diastolic blood pressure, FVC, FEV/sub₁, the flexibility before and after the five week's exercise program. The data are analyzed by the paired t-test and Wilcoxon signed rank test using SAS package. The results are as follows : 1) The hypothesis that cardiorespiratory function will be improved was partly supported. In VO/sub₂ max(p=0.0001), resting heart-rate(p=0.0030), systolic/diastolic blood-pressure(p=0.0387/ p=0.0024), there was significant difference. FVC and FEV/sub₁ were increased after the exercise, but there were no significant difference. 2) The hypothesis that the flexibility will be improved was supported. There was significant difference in the flexibility(p=0.0140). As the further study, it is necessary to reevaluate the effect with more refined design. We also need to try meta-analysis about the results of previous studies obtained in the experimental setting and compare our result obtained in the field setting with them.

  • This paper proposes the extraction of coronary arteries based on DSA(Digital Subtraction Angiography) through a texture analysis of background in the angiography. DSA is a well established modality for the visualization of coronary arteries. DSA involves the subtraction of a mask image - an image of the heart before injection of contrast medium - from live image. However, this technique is sensitive to the movement of background and can result to a wrong detection by the variance of background gray-level intensity between two images. Therefore, this paper solves a structural problem resulted from a background movement bV selecting an image which has the least difference of movement through an analysis of the similarity of background texture and proposes a method to extract only the blood vessel efficiently through local gray-level correction of the selected image. Using the coronary angiogram of 5 patients clinical data, we proved that the proposed method has the lower false-detection rate, approximately $2\%$, and the higher accuracy than the existing methods.

  • The incidence of second-grade milk production in 9 dairy farms of South Korea was investigated from May 2011 to March 2012, and the serum composition of cows producing first- and second-grade milk in 14 farms including the 9 farms was analyzed. The incidence rate of second-grade milk production of 402 cows in nine dairy farms located in the central and southwestern regions of Korea was 15.4% with the highest rate being 34.4%. Seasonal morbidity was higher during late winter (February) and early summer (June) with the highest rate observed in February (32.6%) followed by November (33.3%). Second-grade milk was most frequently found within one month postpartum (34.1%) while only 3.5% was found during the first 60~90 days of lactating period (n=785, 5 herds). The morbidity increased thereafter (P<0.05) with the highest observed between 270~300 days of lactation (36.1%). The acidity was not significantly different between second-grade ($0.159{\pm}0.026%$) and first-grade milk ($0.158{\pm}0.027%$). Blood serum analysis of 371 cows in the 14 dairy farms indicated that aspartate aminotransferase (AST) level was significantly higher (P<0.001) in cows producing second-grade milk while albumin was significantly lower (P<0.001) than cows producing first-grade milk. Total protein and triglyceride was also significantly low along with glucose, non-esterified fatty acid and blood urea nitrogen in cows producing second-grade milk. Statistical analysis including sensitivity, specificity and positive/negative prediction values showed that lactating cows with high AST, low albumin, total protein and triglyceride levels in the serum tended to produce second-grade milk. It was concluded that serological parameters, especially live functional and metabolic-related serum compositions (AST, albumin, total protein and triglyceride), were significantly influenced in cows producing second-grade milk.
