Lithium titanium oxide as anode material for energy storage prepared by novel synthesis method. Li$_{4}$Ti$_{5}$O$_{12}$ based spinel-framework structures are of great interest material for lithium-ion batteries. We describe here Li$_{4}$Ti$_{5}$O$_{12}$ a zero-strain insertion material was prepared by novel sol-gel method and by high energy ball milling (HEBM) of precursor to from nanocrystalline phases. According to the X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy analysis, uniformly distributed Li$_{4}$ Ti$_{5}$O$_{12}$ particles with grain sizes of 100nm were synthesized. Lithium cells, consisting of Li$_{4}$ Ti$_{5}$O$_{12}$ anode and lithium cathode showed the 173 mAh/g in the range of 1.0 $\~$ 3.0 V. Furthermore, the crystalline structure of Li$_{4}$ Ti$_{5}$O$_{12}$ didn't transform during the lithium intercalation and deintercalation process.

Vanadium dioxide is a well-known metal-insulator phase transition material. Lots of researches of vanadium redox flow batteries have been researched as large scale energy storage system. In this study, vanadium oxide($VO_x$) thin films were applied to cathode for lithium ion battery. The $VO_x$ thin films were deposited on Si substrate($SiO_2$ layer of 300 nm thickness was formed on Si wafer via thermal oxidation process), quartz substrate by RF magnetron sputter system for 60 minutes at $500^{\circ}C$ with different RF powers. The surface morphology of as-deposited $VO_x$ thin films was characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy. The crystallographic property was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. The optical properties were characterized by UV-visible spectrophotometer. The coin cell lithium-ion battery of CR2032 was fabricated with cathode material of $VO_x$ thin films on Cu foil. Electrochemical property of the coin cell was investigated by electrochemical analyzer. As the results, as increased of RF power, grain size of as-deposited $VO_x$ thin films was increased. As-deposited thin films exhibit $VO_2$ phase with RF power of 200 W above. The transmittance of as-deposited $VO_x$ films exhibits different values for different crystalline phase. The cyclic performance of $VO_x$ films exhibits higher values for large surface area and mixed crystalline phase.

The LiCo$O_2$ powder was synthesized by a solution phase reaction. This shows a high (003) peak intensity and low (104) or (101) peak intensities in X-ray diffraction spectra. The LiCo$O_2$/Li cell shows an initial discharge capacity of 102.9mAh/g and an average discharge potential or 3.877V at a current density of 50mA/g between 3.0~4.2V. The peaks of dQ/dV plot are associated with Li ion intercalation/deintercalation reaction. To evaluate the cycleability of an actual battery system, cylindrical lithium ion cell was manufactured using graphitized MPCF anode and LiCoO$_2$ cathode. After 100th cycle, this cel maintains 80% capacity of 10th cycle value. The LiCoO$_2$/MPCF cell has a high discharge voltage of 3.6~3.7V and a good cycle life performance on cycling between 4.2~2.7V.

The structural and thermal stability of $Li[Co_{0.1}Ni_{0.15}Li_{0.2}Mn_{0.55}]O_2$ electrode during cycling process was studied. The sample was prepared by simple combustion method. Although there were irreversible changes on the initial cycle, O3 stacking for $Li[Co_{0.1}Ni_{0.15}Li_{0.2}Mn_{0.55}]O_2$ structure was retained during the first and subsequent cycling process. Impedance of the test cell was decreased after the first charge-discharge process, which would be of benefit to intercalation and deintercalation of lithium ion on subsequent cycling. As expected, cycling test for 75 times increased impedance of the cell a little, instead, thermal stability of $Li[Co_{0.1}Ni_{0.15}Li_{0.2}Mn_{0.55}]O_2$ was improved. Moreover, based on DSC analysis, the initial exothermic peak was shifted to high temperature range and the amount of heat was also decreased after cycling test, which displayed that thermal stability was not deteriorated during cycling.

A fabrication condition of the cathode electrode was optimized in a lithium secondary battery. The $LiNi_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}Co_{1/3}O_2$ powders were used as a cathode material. The $LiNi_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}Co_{1/3}O_2$/Li cells were prepared with a certain formulation and their cycleability and rate-capability were evaluated. Optimum electrode composition simulated from the evaluated value was 86.3: 5.6: 8.1 in mass $\%$ of active material: binder: conducting material. Discharge capacity decreased markedly as the press ratio exceeded $30\%$ during preparation of the electrode. Discharge performance at a high current rate deteriorated abruptly as the electrode thickness was over $120{\mu}m$.

The electrochemical properties of flyash obtained from combustion of fuel in fossil power plants and their performance as anode material of secondary battery have been investigated Various flysh pellets molded at various molding pressure have been used as anode lithium secondary battery. The best Performance was achieved when flyash pellet molded at pressure of 400kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ is utilized, that is, charge capacity of 300kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and Coulombic efficiency of larger than 95% have been achieved. In addition, this battery exhibited good cycling performance. Considering these results, we predicted that utilization of the flyash as anode material and polyaniline conducting polymer as cathode material in a secondary will show capacity of 300mAh/g and Coulombic efficiency of higher than 95%.

The properties of $LiMnO_2$ was studied as a cathode active material for lithium polymer batteries. $LiMnO_2$ cathode active materials were synthesized by the reaction of $LiOH{\cdot}H_2O$ and $Mn_2O_3$ at various temperature under argon atmosphere. The powders were characterized by the X -ray diffraction. For lithium polymer battery applications, the $LiMnO_2$ cell was characterized electrochemically by charge-discharge experiments and a.c. impedance spectroscopy. And the relationship between the characteristics of powders and electrochemical properties was studied in this research. A maximum discharge capacity of 160~170 mAh/g for o-$LiMnO_2$ cell was achieved. The capacity of o-$LiMnO_2$ electrode demonstrated better than of the spinel $LiMnO_2$ by solid-state reaction.
Recently, layered nickel-rich cathode materials (NCM) have attracted considerable attention as advanced alternative cathode materials for use in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, their inferior surface stability that gives rise to rapid fading of cycling performance is a significant drawback. This paper proposes a simple and convenient coating method that improves the surface stability of NCM using sulfate-based solvents that create artificial cathode-electrolyte interphases (CEI) on the NCM surface. SOx-based artificial CEI layer is successfully coated on the surface of the NCM through a wet-coating process that uses dimethyl sulfone (DMS) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as liquid precursors. It is found that the SOx-based artificial CEI layer is well developed on the surface of NCM with a thickness of a few nanometers, and it does not degrade the layered structure of NCM. In cycling performance tests, cells with DMS- or DMSO-modified NCM811 cathodes exhibited improved specific capacity retention at room temperature as well as at high temperature (DMS-NCM811: 99.4%, DMSO-NCM811: 88.6%, and NCM811: 78.4%), as the SOx-based artificial CEI layer effectively suppresses undesired surface reactions such as electrolyte decomposition.
In order to improve the capacity and cycling stability of Ni-rich NCA cathode materials for lithium ion batteries, the boron and cobalt were doped in commercial $Li_{1.06}Ni_{0.91}Co_{0.08}Al_{0.01}O_2$ (NCA) powders. Commercial NCA particles are mixed composites such as secondary particles of about $5{\mu}m$ and $12{\mu}m$, and the particle size was decreased by doping boron and cobalt. The initial discharge capacities of the boron and cobalt doped NCA-B and NCA-Co were found to be 214 mAh/g and 200 mAh/g, respectively, which are higher values than that of the raw NCA cathode material. In particular, NCA-Co exhibits the best discharge capacity of 157 mAh/g after 20 cycles, which is probably due to the enhanced diffusion of lithium ion by crystal growth along with the c-axis direction.
There is a great deal of current interest in the development of rechargeable batteries with high energy storage capability due to an increasing demand for electric vehicles (EVs) with driving ranges comparable to those of gasoline-powered vehicles. Among various types of batteries under development, a Li-O2 battery delivers the highest theoretical energy density; thus, it is considered a promising energy storage technology for EV applications. Despite the fact that extensive research efforts have been made in the field of Li-O2 batteries in recent years, there are still many technical challenges to be addressed, such as low round-trip efficiency, poor reversibility, and poor power capability. In this article, we provide a short review on the fundamental electrochemistry of Li-O2 batteries with non-aqueous electrolytes and on electrode materials that have been employed in cathodes (oxygen electrodes). The major aim of this mini-review is to highlight the physical and electrochemical origins of scientific challenges facing Li-O2 battery technology and to overview the strategies proposed to overcome them.
