  • To predict the dynamic behavior of the cylindrical liquid storage tank subjected to seismic ground motion three dimesional analysis with liquid-structure interaction must be performed, In this study a three dimensional dynamic analysis method over the frequency domain using FE-BE coupling technique which combines the efficiency of the boundary elements for liquid with the versatility of the finite shell elements for tank. The liquid region is modeled using boundary elements which can counter the sloshing effect at free surface and the structure region the tank itself is modeled using the degenerated finite shell elements. At the beginning of the procedure the equivalent mass matrix of the liquid is generated by boundary elements procedure. Then this equivalent mass matrix is combined with the mass matrix of the structure to produce the global mass matrix in the equation of the motion of fluid-structure interaction problem In order to demonstrate the accuracy and validity of the developed method the numerical results re compared with the previous studies. Finally the effects of the fluid-structure interaction on the natural frequency and dynamic response of the system are analyzed.

  • Innovative technical process for Energy Storage System (ESS), Liquid Air Energy Storage system (LAES) is mature technologies based on the gas liquefaction process. In spite of many advantages such as high energy density, no geographical constraints, low investment costs and long useful life, the system has not yet widely commercialized due to low round trip efficiency. To improve RTE and acquire high yield of liquid air, various configurations of LAES process have been considered. In this research, dual refrigerants cycle (R-600a and methanol) for air liquefaction and thermal oil circulation for power generation via liquid air gasification have been applied to improve cycle performance significantly using Aspen HYSYS simulator.

  • Analytical and experimental studies show that the dynamic behavior of liquid storage tanks is significantly influenced by the fluid-structure interaction (FSI). The effects of FSI must be rigorously considered for accurate earthquake analysis and seismic design of liquid storage tanks. In this study, a dynamic analysis of a rectangular liquid storage tank subjected to bi-directional earthquake ground motions is performed and its dynamic characteristics are examined, with the effects of FSI rigorously considered. Hydrodynamic pressure is evaluated using the finite-element approach with acoustic elements and applied to the structure. The responses of the rectangular tank subjected to bi-directional earthquake ground motions are thus obtained. It can be observed that the incident angle of bi-directional horizontal ground motions has significant effects on the dynamic responses of the considered system. Therefore, the characteristics of the system must be considered in its seismic design and performance evaluation.

  • One of the most feasible solution for reducing the excessive energy consumption and carbon dioxide emission is usage of more efficient fuel such as hydrogen. As is well known, there are three viable technologies for storing hydrogen fuel: compressed gas, metal hydride absorption, and cryogenic liquid. In these technologies, the storage for liquid hydrogen has better energy density by weight than other storage methods. However, the cryogenic liquid storage has a significant disadvantage of boiling losses. That is, high performance of thermal insulation systems must be studied for reducing the boiling losses. This paper presents an experimental study on the effective thermal conductivities of the composite layered insulation with aerogel blankets($Cryogel^{(R)}$ Z and $Pyrogel^{(R)}$ XT-E) and Multi-layer insulation(MLI). The aerogel blankets are known as high porous materials and the good insulators within a soft vacuum range($10^{-3}{\sim}1$ Torr). Also, MLI is known as the best insulator within a high vacuum range(<$10^{-6}{\sim}10^{-3}$ Torr). A vertical axial cryogenic experimental apparatus was designed to investigate the thermal performance of the composite layered insulators under cryogenic conditions as well as consist of a cold mass tank, a heat absorber, annular vacuum space, and an insulators space. The composite insulators were laminated in the insulator space that height was 50 mm. In this study, the effective thermal conductivities of the materials were evaluated by measuring boil-off rate of liquid nitrogen and liquid argon in the cold mass tank.

  • As a series of studies on improving the processing suitability of imported Pacific saury, oxidative stability of seasoned-dried Pacific saury treated with liquid smoke (T2 product) was examined during storage, comparing with control (C, seasoning only) and T1 (treatment of 0.05% BHT instead of liquid smoke). The pH of T2 treated with liquid smoke was relatively lower than those of C and T1 during storage. The contents of volatile basic nitrogen in all products increased continuously during storage. In the changes of TBA and POV of products during storage, the POV of T2 was lower than that of T1, and the TBA values of T1 and T2 were lower than that of C product. The major fatty acids were 22 : 1n-11, 20 : 1n-11, 16 : 0, 14 : 0, 22 : 6n-3, 20 : 5n-3, 18 : 4n-3, 16 : 1n-7, 14 : 1n-7 and 18 : 1n-9 in the both C and T2 products. The contents of polyunsaturated fatty acids in hath C and T2 somewhat decreased with increasing storage period, while those of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids increased.

  • In past major earthquakes (1994 Northridge, 1995 Kobe, Chi-Chi 1999, Kocaeli 1999), significant damages occurred in the liquid storage tanks. The basic failure patterns were observed to be the buckling of the tank wall and uplift of the anchorage system. The damages in the industrial facilities and nuclear power plants have caused the spread of toxic substances to the environment and significant fires. Seismic isolation can be used in liquid storage tanks to decouple the structure and decrease the structural demand in the superstructure in case of ground shaking. Previous studies on the use of seismic isolation systems on liquid storage tanks show that an isolation system reduces the impulsive response but might slightly increase the convective one. There is still a lack of understanding of the seismic response of seismically isolated liquid storage tanks considering the fluid-structure interaction. In this study, one broad tank, one medium tank, and one slender tank are selected and designed. Two- and three-dimensional elastomeric bearings are used as seismic isolation systems. The seismic performance of the tanks is then investigated through nonlinear dynamic time-history analyses. The effectiveness of each seismic isolation system on tanks' performance was investigated. Isolator tension forces, modal analysis results, hydrodynamic stresses, strains, sloshing heights and base shear forces of the tanks are compared. The results show that the total base shear is lower in 3D-isolators compared to 2D-isolators. Even though the tank wall stresses, and strains are slightly higher in 3D-isolators, they are more efficient to prevent the tension problem.

  • A reinforced concrete water tank is a typical functional liquid storage structure and cracks are the greatest threat to the liquid storage structure. Tanks are readily cracked due to seismic activity, thereby leading to the leakage of the stored liquid and a loss of function. In order to study the effect of cracks on liquid storage tanks, self-healing and leakage tests for bending cracks and through cracks in the walls of a reinforced concrete water tank were conducted. Material performance tests were also performed. The self-healing performance of bending cracks in a lentic environment and through cracks in a lotic environment were tested, thereby the self-healing width of bending micro-cracks in the lentic environment in the short term were determined. The through cracks had the capacity for self-healing in the lotic environment was found. The leakage characteristics of the bending cracks and through cracks were tested with the actual water head on the crack. The effects on liquid leakage of the width of bending cracks, the depth of the compression zone, and the acting head were determined. The relationships between the leakage rate and time with the height of the water head were analyzed. Based on the tests, the relationships between the crack characteristics and self-healing as well as the leakage were obtained. Thereby the references for water tank structure design and grading earthquake damage were provided.

  • Pig slurry has been considered as environmental waste to be treated in an appropriate manner. Recently, there has been the movement toward reusing the pig slurry as an alternative fertilizer sources for agricultural lands. For instance, SCB(Slurry Composting & Biofiltration) liquid fertilizer has been developed and widely used in Korea. However, the impacts of swine slurry liquid fertilizers on both agricultural environment and crop yield have not been investigated yet. Therefore, the current study was conducted to accumulate the basic data which can be subsequently used to determine appropriate application amount of swine slurry liquid fertilizers (SCB liquid fertilizer and storage liquid fertilizer) as well as the application method for each liquid fertilizer. For this, growth of rice was cultivated under the treatment of SCB liquid fertilizer, storage liquid fertilizer, and chemical fertilizer. Also, control treatment (no fertilizer) was included for comparison and all treatments were conducted in five replication. Rice growth was good with the treatment in the order of chemical fertilizer>storage liquid fertilizer>SCB liquid fertilizer>control and likewise, the yield amount of rice straw was in the same order of rice growth. The rice yield amount appeared to be no difference among the treatment except control which showed the least yield amount. Also there was no difference in nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in rice among the treatment except control which showed the least concentration.

  • In this study, a compact hydrogen liquefaction system was constructed with the aim of creating a data storage and monitoring program for liquid hydrogen production. This program was designed to receive and record signals from diverse control equipment through the LabVIEW software. A range of measurement instruments were devised to collect data, encompassing variables such as flow rate, pressure, temperature, and liquid level. As a result, it was possible to directly check the production of liquid hydrogen by obtaining various data of condensed liquid hydrogen. In addition, it was confirmed that long-term storage of liquid hydrogen is possible by developing automatic ON/OFF through the LabVIEW program.
