  • At steady state, the simultaneous transport of sulphuric acid and nickel sulphate through an anion-exchange membrane Neosepta-AFN (Astom Corporation, Tokyo, Japan) was investigated in a two-compartment counter-current dialyzer with single passes. The transport was quantified by the recovery yield of acid, rejection of salt and four phenomenological coefficients, which were correlated with the acid and salt concentrations in the feed. The phenomenological coefficients were determined by the numerical integration of the basic differential equations describing the concentration profiles of the components in the dialyzer. This integration was combined with an optimizing procedure. The experiments proved that the acid recovery yield is in the limits from 63 to 91 %, while salt rejection is in the limits from 79 to 97 % in the dependence on the volumetric liquid flow rate and composition of the feed.

  • Electrostatic printing either it is drop-on-demand or continuous has immense applications in non-contact printing systems such as solar cells, flexible printed circuits, RFIDs and bio applications. In this paper a laboratory manufactured nozzle has been designed for the experimental investigation of electrostatic dripping and atomization of liquid. Dripping and atomization conditions such as voltage, nozzle tip diameter, distance between counter electrode and flowrate has been indentified for the designed nozzle. Furthermore it is also demonstrated that the diameter of a generated droplet could be reduced from a significantly large size to a narrow size distribution which can be controlled by volumetric flow rate and applied voltage. This study will help in classify the conditions between different electrostatic dripping mode such as drop-on-demand formation, jet mode and finally the atomization mode based on the laboratory fabricated nozzle head.

  • The forced convective boiling heat transfer coefficients of R-407C were measured inside a horizontal tube 6.0mm I.D. and 4.0m long. The heat transfer coefficients increased according to an increase in heat flux at constant mass flux. Because nucleation was completely suppressed in the two-phase flow region with high quality, heat transfer coefficients in forced convective evaporation were higher than those in nucleate boiling region. Average heat transfer coefficients of R-407C were about 30 percent lower than the pure refrigerant correlation, due to mass transfer resistance at the gas-liquid interface. However, the total experimental data shows an agreement with the predicted data for ternary refrigerant mixtures with a mean deviation of 30%.

  • In this paper, a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamic model of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell(PEMFC) with serpentine flow channel is presented. A steady state, single phase and isothermal numerical model has been established to investigate the influence of the GDL (Gas Diffusion Layer) parameters. The GDL is made of a porous material such as carbon cloth, carbon paper or metal wire mesh. For the simplicity, the GDL is modeled as a block of material having numerous pathways through which gaseous reactants and liquid water can pass. The porosity, permeability and thickness of the GDL, which are employed in the model parameters significantly affect the PEMFC performance at the high current region.

  • This study strives to develop an effective strategy to inhibit cavitation inception on hydrofoils by using local cooling technique. By setting up a temperature boundary condition and cooling a small area on the upper surface of a hydrofoil, the fluid temperature around the cooling surface will be decreased and thereby the corresponding liquid saturation pressure will drop below the lowest absolute pressure within the flow field. Hence, cavitation can never occur. In this paper, a NACA0015 hydrofoil at $4^{\circ}$ angle of attack was numerically investigated to verify the effectiveness of the proposed technique. The CFD results indicate that the cooling temperature and the cooling surface roughness are the critical factors affecting the success of such technique used for cavitation suppression.

  • A plasmid vector containing two reporter genes, mer-lux and lac-GFP, was transformed to both Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas putida. Their cellular activities and biofilm characteristics were investigated in flow-cell units by measuring bioluminescent lights and fluorescent levels of GFP. Bioluminescence was effective to monitor temporal cell activities, whereas fluorescent level of GFP was useful to indicate the overall cell activities during biofilm development. The light production rates of E. coli and P. putida cultures were dependent upon concentrations of HgCl2. Mercury molecules entrapped in P. putida biofilms were hardly washed out in comparison with those in E. coli biofilms, indicating that P. putida biofilms may have higher affinity to mercury molecules than E. coli biofilms. It was observed that P. putida expressed GFP cDNA in biofilms but not in liquid cultures. This may indicate that the genetic mechanisms of P. putida were favorably altered in biofilm conditions to make a foreign gene expression possible.

  • An experiment was conducted to observe the safranine penetration depth in radial directions of Populus tomentiglandulosa. Radial penetration was considered from bark to pith. In radial direction, ray parenchyma and intercellular space were considered for the measurement of safranine penetration depth. It was found that sapwood conducted safranine 24.23% higher in radial direction compared with heartwood. Intercellular space conducted safranine 39.27% higher depth compared with ray parenchyma and the penetration depth was 39.41% higher in sapwood compared to heartwood. During safranine penetration, it formed a curvature in the lumen of ray parenchyma. Initially safranine penetration was found high and decreased gradually.

  • In this paper, it is studied the electrostatic discharge In Insulating oil for the purpose of the technical control of the streaming electrification resulted from the interface between an insulating liquid and a solid. The streaming current increases exponentially with flow rate and In region of lower than 50[$^{\circ}C$]but decreases at higher than the same temperature. The phenomena of electrostatic discharge appear at an interface between measuring tank and insulating oil when the seven sheets of gauzes are inserted in electrification apparatus. And those of partial or surface discharge are shown when eight sheets are inserted.
