  • Blends of silicone rubber (VMQ) and liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) were prepared by the melt mixing technique. Mechanical, XRD, thermal and dynamic mechanical investigations are reported for the pure silicone rubber and blends. The mechanical properties, viz. the tensile strength, tear strength and elongation at break, of the silicone rubber decreased with the addition of LCP. The SEM study on the tensile fractured surface of the blends revealed that they had a two phase structure, and that the failure was mainly due to fiber pull out, which suggests that the VMQ and LCP are incompatible in all of the proportions examined in this study. However, the FTIR study shows that there was a partial interaction between the VMQ and LCP, but which may not be sufficient to grip the fibrils under the applied load. In the XRD analysis, it was observed that the crystalline structure of the silicone rubber deteriorated in the presence of LCP. The DMA study suggested that the storage modulus of the silicone rubber was improved with the addition of LCP, due to the high modulus of the LCP phase. The thermal stability of the silicone rubber was greatly reduced by the addition of LCP, due to the latter having a thermal stability lower than that of silicone rubber.

  • We synthesized chiral choleseric liquid crystalline monomer p-phenylene bis-(p-3-acryloxy-2(S)-methylpropoxy)benzoate (1) and achiral nematic liquid crystalline monomer, p-phenylene p-acryloxy-6-hexyloxy-p-octyloxybenzoate (2) for the construction of cholesteric polymer network with a pitch gradient. In this research we attempted to synthesize cholesteric polymer film which have a wide reflection bandwidth in the region of visible wavelength with the synthesized chiral cholesteric monomer 1 and nematic monomer 2 under various photopoly merization conditions. We succeeded to construct cholesteric polymer film network with a pitch gradient covering more than 200 nm bandwidth in the visible wavelength by diffusion controlled photostructuring method.

  • We fabricated the outer type-dynamic microlens array using a surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal, UV curable polymer and the stacked liquid crystalline polymer. The outer type-microlens array has a lower driving voltage and fast switching property. It is applicable to a variety of optical systems.

  • Blends of silicone rubber (VMQ) and liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) were prepared using a melt blending technique in the presence and absence of glass fiber and coupling agents. The effect of glass fiber and coupling agents on the thermal, dynamic mechanical, morphological pro-perties and cure characteristics of VMQ/LCP blends were studied. The vinyl silane coupling agent showed a significant effect on the above mentioned properties of VMQ/LCP blends by reacting at the interface between VMQ and LCP. The viscosity of the VMQ/LCP blends decreased with the addition of a coupling agent. A substantial improvement in storage modulus of VMQ/LCP blends was observed in the presence of glass fiber and coupling agents. However, as a coupling agent vinyl silane proved to be better than amine for the VMQ/LCP-glass-containing blends. The thermal stability of the pure silicone rubber was higher than those of the blends. This high thermal stability of silicone rubber was attributed to the Si-O-Si bonds. However, the thermal stability of the blends decreased further in the presence of a coupling agent, possibly due to a decrease in blend crystallinity.

  • Several liquid crystalline monomers were synthesized and characterized to utilize as new matrix materials of liquid crystal/polymer composite films for display application. Liquid crystalline compounds which have azo group as center link, cyano group at one of the terminal position in common and bromoalkyl(azo(n)), azidoalkyl(AZI(n)), aminoalkyl(ALC(n)) as the terminal group were synthesized and identified respectively by FT-lR, $^1H-NMR$ spectrometer and elemental analysis. All these compounds exhibited nematic liquid crystalline region in the certain temperature range as determined by DSC and polarized optical microscope. These liquid crystalline compounds also showed a typical even-odd effect in both $T_{KN}$ and $T_{NI}$ due to conformational change as the length of terminal alkyl chain, $-(CH_2)n-$. was varied.

  • New liquid crystalline Y-shaped molecules containing 1,3,4-oxadizoles have been synthesized with variation of terminal groups (R = H, $OCH_3$ or $OC_8H_{17}$). The structures of obtained compounds were identified by FT/IR and NMR spectrometry, and their thermal and liquid crystalline properties were investigated by DSC and polarizing optical microscope.

  • In-situ photopolymerization of alkyl acrylate monomers in the presence of a nematic fluid provides a cellular matrix of liquid crystalline droplets in which the chemical structure of the encapsulating polymer exerts control over the alignment (anchoring) of the liquid crystalline molecules. Control is obtained by variation of the alkyl side chains and through copolymerization of two dissimilar monofunctional acrylates. Two monofunctional acrylates with opposing tendencies on copolymerization provide control over the tunability of anchoring over a wide temperature range. Using various acrylates we show that a uniform vertical alignment can be achieved over a large area. Utilizing this technique and a nematic with negative dielectric anisotropy, we have fabricated highly flexible liquid crytal based devices, with high contrast and fast response time, without using any alignment layer.

  • Linear aromatic polyesters are representative examples of thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers (TLCPs), which have been the subject of many researches. This article reviews the structure-LC properties relationship in wholly aromatic CLCPs mostly based on the results obtained for the past quarter of a century. Especially, this review deals with the structural details of aromatic polyester TLCPs that influence the liquid crystalline and thermal properties. In the last part of this article the liquid crystalline properties of combined type and hyperbranched polyester also are discussed. Introduction to various synthetic methods are included in the last section.

  • A new hydroxylpropyl chitosan (HPCTO) capable of forming both thermotropic and lyotropic liquid crystalline phases was synthesized by reaction of alkali chitosan with propylene oxide and its solid films cross-linked with glyoxal were prepared by casting the liquid crystalline solution in methanol. The thermal and swelling properties of the cross-linked films were investigated. The films displayed fingerprint patterns characteristic of cholesteric liquid-crystalline phase, and their pitches increased with increasing temperature and cross-linker concentration. The cross-linked samples exhibited an anisotropic swelling in both water and methanol, suggesting that the two-dimensional cross-linking preferentially performs between HPCTO molecules. The degree of anisotropy highly depended on the solvent, but hardly on the cross-linker concentration investigated.
