In this study, the mechanism on the phase behavior of polysorbate nonionic surfactants was investigated. In the ternary system containing water, hexanol as a polar oil and surfactant, the phase behaviors ranging from micellar region to occurrence of liquid crystal phase were observed by crossed microscope. As results, fine mosaic texture of liquid crystal phase and other phases were examined in the range of 20~70 wt%. This range if thought to give information about the basic data for the formulation of more stable emulsifying systems or dispersed systems. According to the alkyl chain length, three phase region diminished, whereas two phase range increased without an observation of the anisotropic liquid crystalline phase.
The synthesis and characterization of the nitrile ligands 3,4,5-tridodecyloxy benzonitrile (7) and 3,4,5-trioctadecyloxy benzonitrile (8), and their corresponding palladium(Ⅱ) complexes are described. The nitrile ligands display only a crystalline phase and do not show liquid crystalline behavior, while their corresponding palladium(Ⅱ) complexes dispaly an enantiotropic columnar mesophase. The induction of the columnar mesophase is mainly due to dimerization through the palladium complexation of the half disk-like nitrile ligands giving rise to a trans square planar geometry.
A homologous series of linear liquid crystal dimers, the ${\alpha},{\omega}$-bis(4-cyano-azobenzene-4'-oxy)alkanes (CATWETn, where n, the number of methylene units in the spacer, is 2~10) were synthesized, and their thermotropic liquid crystalline phase behavior were investigated. The CATWETn with n of 3 and 6 exhibited monotropic nematic phases, whereas other derivatives showed enantiotropic nematic phases. The nematic-isotropic transition temperatures of the dimers and their entropy variation at the phase transition showed a large odd-even effect as a function of n. This phase transition behavior was rationalized in terms of the change in the average shape of the spacer on varying the parity of the spacer. The thermal stability and degree of order in the nematic phase and the magnitude of the odd-even effect of CATWETn were similar to those for the methoxy-, nitro-, and pentyl-substituted dimers, while they were significantly different from those for the monomesogenic compounds, 1-{4-(4'-cyanophenylazo)phenoxy}alkylbromides and the side-chain liquid-crystalline polymers, the poly[1-{4-(4'-cyanophenylazo)phenoxyalkyloxy}ethylene]s. The results were discussed in terms of 'virtual trimer model' by Imrie.
The crosslinked films retaining cholesteric liquid-crystalline order were prepared by casting the liquid crystalline solutions of hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) in methanol with the two kinds of aliphatic dicarboxylic acid chlorides (succinyl chloride and suberoyl chloride). The temperature dependence on the cholesteric pitch of the crosslinked films and the swelling behavior of the films in both water and methanol were investigated. The films displayed fingerprint patterns charateristic of cholesteric liquid-crystalline phase, and their pitches, as well as HPC itself, increased with temperature. However, the pitch of all crosslinked samples was much greater than that of HPC at the same temperature and increased with increasing concentration and chain length of the crosslinker. The crosslinked samples exhibited an anisotropic swelling in both solvents. The degree of anisotropy slightly depended on the solvent and crosslinker species, but hardly on the crosslinker concentration investigated.
The thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior of the homologous series of combined-type liquid crystalline polymers, tri-O-{4-(4'-cyanophenylazo)phenoxy}alkyl celluloses (CACETn, where n, the number of methylene units in the spacer, is 2~10) have been investigated. The CACETn with n of 5 and 7 exhibited enantiotropic nematic phases, while other polymers showed monotropic nematic phases. The isotropic-nematic transition temperature($T_{iN}$) increased when n is increased up to 4, but it decreased with increasing n more than 5. The entropy change at $T_{iN}$ also reaches a minimum at n=5, before it increases again for n=6. The sharp change at n=5 may be attributed to the difference in arrangement in the side groups. The nematic-crystalline transition temperatures, in contrast with $T_{iNS}$, exhibited a distinct odd-even effect, suggesting that the average shape of the side chains in the crystalline phase is different from that in the nematic phase. The mesophase properties of CACETn were significantly different from those reported for tri-O-alkyl celluloses and poly[1-{4-(4'-cyanophenylazo)phenoxyalkyloxy}ethylene]s. The results were discussed in terms of the difference in the chemical structures of the main and side chains and the number of the mesogenic units per repeating unit.
A series of ${\alpha}{\omega}-bis[4-(4'-(S)-(+)-2-methylbutylbiphenyl-4-carboxy)phenoxy]alkanes$, were synthesized, and their thermal and liquid crystalline properties were studied. The chain length of the central polymethylene spacers, x, of the chiral twin compounds was varied from 3 to 12. These compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and NMR spectroscopy, differential thermal analysis (DSC), and crosspolarized microscopy. All compounds were found to be enantiotropic liquid crystalline, and the values of melting $(T_m)$ and isotropization temperature $(T_i)$ as well as ${\delta}H_I$ and ${\delta}S_I$ decreased in a zig-zag fashion, revealing the so called odd-even effect as x increased. Their mesomorphic properties fell into four categories depending upon x; (a) compounds with x=3, 4 and 5 formed only a cholesteric phase on heating, while on cooling they went through two transitions of isotropic (I)-to-cholesteric (Ch) and Ch-to-smectic $A\;(S_A)$ phases before crystallization. (b) compounds with x=6, 8 and 10 exhibited only a cholesteric phase both on heating and on cooling. (c) compounds with x=7 and 9 went through three transitions of crystal $(C)-to-S_A,\;S_A-to-Ch,$ and Ch-to-I phases on heating while on cooling they went through four transitions of I-to-Ch, $Ch-to-S_A,\;S_A-to-Smectic\;C\;(S_C),\;and\;S_c-to-C$ phases in that order, and (d) compounds with x=11 and 12 went reversibly through four transitions of $C-to-S_C,\;S_C-to-S_A,\;S_A-to-Ch,$ and Ch-to-I phases.
The new liquid crystalline (LC) epoxy was designed by substituting the phenylcyclohexyl (PCH) mesogen moiety with an alkyl chain at the 2,5 position of the diglycidyl terephthalate. The mesomorphic properties were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). All LC epoxy derivatives exhibited an enantiotropic smectic phase upon heating and cooling process. The LC phase temperature range was widened by mixing the eutectic mixture of LC epoxies. Interestingly, the cured LC epoxy exhibited the highest thermal conductivity of $0.4W{\cdot}m^{-1}{\cdot}K^{-1}$. The novel LC epoxy with high thermal conductivity might be used as a composite material for electronic and display devices.

Wholly aromatic polyesters having flexible alkoxy side chain were synthesized by direct polycondensation. The synthetic polymers have been characterized by $^1H$-NMR, FT-IR. DSC, TGA, optical polarizing microscope and X-ray diffractometer. The inherent viscosities (${\eta}_{inh}$) measured in 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane (TCE) were 0.46~2.41 dL/g. The polymers having side chain showed double melting transition, ie, solid-sanidic liquid crystalline (LC) phase transition ($T_{m1}$) and sanidic LC phase-nematic LC phase transition ($T_{m2}$). As incresing length of alkoxy side chain, phase transition temperatures decreased and solubilities in organic solvents incresed. The peaks of $2{\theta}\;{\simeq}5$ and $2{\theta}\;{\simeq}20$ in X-ray diffractograms are due to crystallization of polymer main chain and of long side chain, respectively.

The crystal structure of ZnS fabricated by gas-liquid phase reaction was obtained by XRD and refined by RIETAN near R$_{wp}$ factor 10%. The increasement of HCP phase depended on extra H$_2$S gas and the lattice parameter and crystalline size changed by the relative ratio of multiphase. Using ZnS of the different multiphase ratio and crystalline size, sintered ZnS:Cu, Al green phosphor and the CL property resulted optimum luminescence in the range of 91~94% and 150~190$\AA$, respectably, FCC/HCP ratio and crystalline size. As changing of structure ratio, the reason of different luminescence property is now studying. As well as, after XRD pattern of TiO$_2$powder fitted by RIETAN and the structure factor using MEED method simulated about each atom of (002) plane. Additionally, we proposed RIETAN and MEED were the methods of the study of luminescence mechanism for many phosphor materials.s.

The effects of water addition on $Y_2O_3$ coatings or thick films prepared by plasma suspension spray (SPS) have been investigated. Water addition in suspension media was found to be effective to control the color of a $Y_2O_3$ coating prepared by SPS. The color changed with water addition at the shortest stand-off distance of 50 mm even if samples had the same crystalline phase. Change was not correlated with fragmentation behavior of liquid suspension inside the plasma jet. Water content over 50 vol% was found to produce unmelted particles, indicating that water suppressed heat transfer to the particles. However, plasma jet temperature was not affected. Instead, the coating fabricated with water addition has higher oxygen and lower carbon content compared to these characteristics of the coating without water addition. This was attributed to the retarded complete evaporation of liquid media from the suspension droplet, resulting in inhibition of excessive heating and evaporation of the molten $Y_2O_3$ droplet. In this regard, crystalline phase development with respect to stand-off distance and water addition was discussed.
