The structure of a variable liquid column oscillator(a VLCO) is analogous to that of the tuned liquid column damper used to suppress oscillatory motion in large structures like tall buildings and cargo ships. The VLCO is a system absorbing high kinetic energy of accelerated motions of multiple floating bodies in the effect of air springs occurred by installation of inner air chambers. Thus, VLCO can improve the efficiency of energy than wave energy converters of the activating object type made in Pelamis Company. In this research, the experiment was performed that a simple floating body was filled with internal fluid of same draft. The characteristics of motions were evaluated in each case of the opening or closing of the upper valves.

The numerical results were estimated by assuming that do not exist internal flow, and the results were compared with the results of experiments.

Gas-liquid mass transfer characteristics were investigated in pressurized three-phase slurry bubble columns with variation of column diameter. Effects of gas velocity, operating pressure, liquid viscosity, solid content in the slurry phase and column diameter on the gas-liquid volumetric mass transfer coefficient($k_La$) were determined. The effects of operating variables on the mass transfer coefficient tended to change with variation of column diameter. The mass transfer coefficient increased with increasing gas velocity or operating pressure but decreased with increasing column diameter, liquid viscosity or solid concentration in the slurry phase. The increase trend of $k_La$ value with increasing gas velocity and the decrease trend of $k_La$ value with increasing liquid viscosity, tended to decrease gradually with increasing column diameter. However, the effects of operating pressure and solid concentration in the slurry phase on the $k_La$ value did not change considerably with variation of column diameter. The values of $k_La$ were well correlated with operating variables with in this experimental conditions as $k_La=0.02D^{-0.26}U_G^{0.28}P^{0.43}{\mu}_L^{-0.04}S_c^{-0.35}$.
Liquid injection in a Venturi Scrubber creates great effect on the dust-collection efficiency and operation cost of venturi scrubbers. We have developed a model that can numerically simulate atomization of the liquid jet in the Venturi Scrubber. This simulation consists of models on liquid column, jet surface breakup, column fracture and secondary droplet breakup. These models have been embedded in the KIVA3-V code. We have calculated such parameters as the jet penetration, jet trajectory, droplet size, velocity field and the volume flux distribution. The results are compared with the experimental data in this paper.
The effects of column length and particle size on the efficiency of separation and characterization of phospholipids (PLs) are investigated using nanoflow liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (nLC-ESI-MS-MS). Since PLs are associated with cell proliferation, apoptosis, and signal transduction, it is of increasing interests in lipidomics to establish reliable analytical methods for the qualitative and quantitative profiling of PLs related to biomarker development in adult diseases. Due to the complexity of PLs, the preliminary separation of PLs is necessary prior to MS analysis. In this study, length of capillary column and the particle size of reversed phase ($C_{18}$) packing materials are varied to find a reliable condition for the high speed and high resolution separation using 8 PL standard mixtures. From experiments, it was found that a capillary column of nLC-ESI-MS-MS analysis for PL mixtures can be minimized to a 5 cm long pulled tip column packed with 3 ${\mu}m$$C_{18}$ particles without losing resolution.
Tomato fruits(Lycoperisicon esculentum) synthesize the glycoalkaloids dehydrotomatine and ${\alpha}$-tomatine, possibly as defense against bacteria, fungi and insects. We developed a new effective method to prepare and purify dehydrotomatine and ${\alpha}$-tomatine that exists in tomato fruits using alumina column chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The tomato glycoalkaloids(TGA) in tomato was extracted with 2% acetic acid, and then precipitated with ammonium hydroxide(pH=10.5). The dry precipitate substance was applied on alumina column, and then fractionated with water saturated n-butylalcohol. The TGA(Fr. No. 26~36) were collected and dried under reduced pressure. The TGA was performed on a reverse phase HPLC(Inertsil ODS-2, $5\;{\mu}m$), eluted with acetonitrile/20mM $KH_2PO_4$(24:76, v/v) at 208 nm. Two peaks were detected on HPLC, and individual peak was collected by repeating HPLC. Furthermore, to confirm the identity dehydrotomatine and ${\alpha}$-tomatine, each peak isolated was hydrolyzed with 1N HCl into sugar and aglycone tomatidine. The sugars were converted to trimethylsilyl ester derivatives. The nature and molar ratios of sugars were identified by gas-liquid chromatography(GLC) and the aglycone by high-performance liquid chromatography(HPLC). The first peak (Rt=17.5 min) eluted from HPLC was identified as dehydrotomatine, and second peak(Rt=21.0 min) was as ${\alpha}$-tomatine. This technique has been used effectively to prepare and isolate dehydrotomatine and ${\alpha}$-tomatine from tomato fruits.

Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi (Scutellariae Radix) has been widely used as a dietary ingredient and traditional herbal medicine such as diuretic, hyperlipidemia, antibacterial, anti-allergy, anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties. In this study, the isolation of biomarkers or bioactive compounds from complex S. baicalensis extracts represents an essential step for de novo identification and bioactivity assessment. The bioactive fraction consisted of eight compounds which was chromatographed on an analytical high performance liquid chromatography column using two different gradient runs. A simulative replacement of the analytical column with a medium pressure liquid chromatography and open column allowed the determination of gradient profile to allow sufficient separation in the preparative scale. From the optimized method, eight standard compounds have been identified in the fractions. In addition, MS, UV, HRMS detection was provided by ultraperformance liquid chromatographyequadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-QTof-MS) of all fractions. Therefore, this scale up procedure was successfully applied to a S. baicalensis extract.

LES(Large eddy simulation) of breakup and atomization of a liquid jet into cross turbulent flow was performed. Two phase flow between a gas phase and a liquid phase was modeled by a mixed numerical scheme of both Eulerian and Lagrangian methods for gas and liquid phases respectively. The first and second breakup of liquid column was observed. The penetration depth in cross flow was comparable with experimental data for several variant of a liquid-gas momentum flux ratio by varying liquid injection velocities. SMD(Sauter Mean Diameter) distribution downstream of jet was analyzed.

LES(Large eddy simulation) of breakup and droplet atomization of a liquid jet into cross turbulent flow was performed. Two phase flow of gas and liquid phases were modeled by the mixed numerical scheme of both Eulerian and Lagrangian methods for gas and liquid droplet respectively. The breakup process of a liquid column and droplets was observed by implementing the blob-KH wave breakup model. The penetration depth into cross flow was comparable with experimental data for several variants of the liquid-gas momentum flux ratio by varying liquid injection velocity. SMD(Sauter Mean Diameter) distribution downstream of jet was analyzed.
BACKGROUND: Because dried herbal medicines have many active ingredients, it is not easy to determine the residue amount after extraction, partition and clean up of pesticides from them. Especially, liquid-liquid partition method is consuming many times and solvents. Macroporous diatomaceous earth(MDE) column was used to replace the separatory funnel for liquid-liquid extraction with dichloromethane to analyze the endosulfan and its metabolite. METHODS AND RESULTS: The residue analysis method using MDE column instead of liquid-liquid partition for determining insecticide endosulfan and its metabolite in 4 dried herbal medicines was developed by GC/MS. As a result, the recovery rates of the pesticides in 4 herbal medicines were ranged from 80.3 to 93.5% for ${\alpha}$-endosulfan, from 81.0 to 100.3% for ${\beta}$-endosulfan and from 80.6 to 95.6% for endosulfan sulfate, respectively. The coefficients of variation for triplicate were ranged from 1.1 to 3.4%. CONCLUSION: The improved methods are more ecofriendly, safer, faster and less laborious than conventional method by KFDA.
