  • This paper is an HPSG approach to agreement phenomena involving the Korean honorific expressions. it is shown that the theoretical devices developed by the constraint-based theory of HPSG can be fruitfully used to capture the interactions between syntactic constraints and semantic of pragmatic factors in Korean honorific agreement. The HPSG's semantic feature 'referential index' plays a key rele in discribing the multiple interaction. The constraint-based theory of agreement proves successful in accounting for the phenomenon that may be called 'inconsistent' honorific agreement as well as 'consistent' regular honorific usages. However, this paper acknowledges its limit. Recognizing an important distinction between basic and 'coercive' honorific expressions, it is argued that a systactic-semantic-pragmatic approach such as the present one can only be applied to basic honorific agreement. Being sociolinguistic in nature, coercive honorific agreement is perhaps not amenable to formal linguistic investigation.

  • The flank wear at the minor cutting edge significantly affects the geometric accuracy and surface roughness in finish machining. A fuzzy estimator based on a fuzzy inference algorithm with a max-min composition rule is introduced to evaluate the minor flank wear length. The features sensitive to minor flank wear are extracted from the dispersion analysis of a time series AR model of the feed directional acceleration signal. These features, dispersions, are used for constructing linguistic rules, and then the fuzzy inferences are carried out with test data sets collected under various cutting conditions. The proposed system turns out to be effective for estimating minor flank wear length.

  • Social media platforms have become prominent channels for e-commerce, and the role of social network sites' (SNS) content marketing is expanding as a strategic marketing communication approach to attract and retain consumers and increase sales. In this study, we focused on South Korea market and explored the influence of linguistic complexity and informality on consumer engagement. In particular, we identified the importance of complexity, focusing on its negative effects, as well as the moderating effect of commerce features to minimize these effects. Specifically, content length, hashtags, long words, and average sentence length significantly and negatively impacted consumer engagement. The influence of emojis, an informality variable, was not statistically significant. Shoppable tags, a commerce feature that provides both advertising explicitness and shopping convenience, were a moderating factor in the influence of complexity. Our findings provide new insights for content marketing researchers, and have practical implications for social media managers and content developers.

  • In this paper, we introduce a system that summarizes product evaluation through linguistic analysis to effectively utilize explosively increasing product reviews. Our system analyzes polarities of product reviews by product features, based on which customers evaluate each product like 'design' and 'material' for a skirt product category. The system shows to customers a graph as a review summary that represents percentages of positive and negative reviews. We build an opinion word dictionary for each product feature through context based automatic expansion with small seed words, and judge polarity of reviews by product features with the extracted dictionary. In experiment using product reviews from online shopping malls, our system shows average accuracy of 69.8% in extracting judgemental word dictionary and 81.8% in polarity resolution for each sentence.

  • We propose a new similarity measure based on relative membership function (RMF). In this paper, the RMF is suggested to represent the relativity between fuzzy subsets easily. Since the shape of the RMF is determined according to the values of its parameters, we can easily represent the relativity between fuzzy subsets by adjusting only the values of its parameters. Hence, we can easily reflect the relativity among individuals or cultural differences when we represent the subjectivity by using the fuzzy subsets. In this case, these parameters may be regarded as feature points for determining the structure of fuzzy subset. In the sequel, the degree of similarity between fuzzy subsets can be quickly computed by using the parameters of the RMF. We use Euclidean distance to compute the degree of similarity between fuzzy subsets represented by the RMF. In the meantime, we present a new linguistic approximation method as an application area of the proposed similarity measure and show its numerical example.

  • This study aimed to investigate speech motor control in adults who stutter (AWS) by testing whether articulation rate changes with practice and linguistic complexity. Eleven AWS and 11 adults who do not stutter (AWNS) repeated four sentences of different lengths and syntactic complexity [simple-short (SS), simple-long (SL), complex-long (CL), and faulty-long (FL) sentences]. Overall articulation rates of each sentence were measured and compared between groups. Practice effects were evaluated by comparing the articulation rates of the first three, middle four, and last three productions. Overall, the AWS had significantly slower articulation rates than AWNS across the four sentences. The longer sentences showed significantly slower articulation rates than the baseline sentence (SS). The articulation rates of the middle four and the last three productions were significantly faster than those of the first three productions of each sentence in both groups. The articulation rates of the SS, SL, and CL sentences indicated a consistent practice effect. The slower articulation rates of the AWS are consistent with a speech motor limitation. There was no interaction with linguistic complexity or practice, so a slower articulation rate may be a general feature of the speech of AWS. Both AWS and AWNS showed practice effects with faster articulation rates which may reflect a degree of adaptation to the stimuli.

  • Text Generation is a process of generating comprehensible texts in human languages from some underlying non-linguistic representation of information. Among several sub-processes for text generation to generate coherent texts, this paper concerns referring expression generation which produces different types of expressions to refer to previously-mentioned things in a discourse. Specifically, we focus on pronominalization by zero pronouns which frequently occur in Korean. To build a generation model of referring expressions for Korean, several features are identified based on grammatical information and cost-based centering model, which are applied to various machine learning techniques. We demonstrate that our proposed features are well defined to explain pronominalization, especially pronominalization by zero pronouns in Korean, through 95 texts from three genres - Descriptive texts, News, and Short Aesop's Fables. We also show that our model significantly outperforms previous ones with a 99.9% confidence level by a T-test.

  • Referential expression 'Geot' is often occurred in Korean dialogues. However, it has not been properly dealt with by the previous researchers of reference resolution, since it is not by itself the referential expression like pronoun and definite noun phrases, and it has never been discriminated from non-referring 'geot'. To resolve this problem, we establish a feature set which is based on the linguistic property of 'geot' and the discourse property of its text, and propose a method to identify referential 'geot' from non-referring 'geot' using decision tree. In the experiment, our system achieved the F-measures of 92.3% for non-referring geot and of 82.2% for referential geot and the total classification performance of 89.27%, and outperformed the classification system based on pattern rules.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the feature and phenomena of women's costume in Choson dynasty by the approach of semiotics. In order to do so, F Saussure's linguistic symbol theory, C. Peirce's conception on semiology theory and cultural semiology of R. Barthes ware used as tool to analyse traditional women's costumes in $Chos\v{o}n$ dynasty. And I choose basic conceptions based on their semiotic theory. which were langue & parole. dennotation & connotation, paradigm & syntagm, code, and analysed. structure of sign, communication though the non-language. The fashion of the $Chos\v{o}n$ dynasty contains various meaning as sign symbol system and makes the communication possible as it is mentioned above. We nay understand the sign symbol system described in the fashion sign by analysing the structure and meaning operation of sign on the basis of social, political, and idealistic background of the times, to understand the polysemy quality of the fashion.

  • Background in a novel is most important elements with characters and events, and means time, place and situation that characters appeared. Among the background, spatial background can help conveys topic of a novel. So, it may be helpful for choosing a novel that readers want to read. In this paper, we are targeting Korean historical novels. In case of English text, It can be recognize spatial background easily because it use upper and lower case and words used with the spatial information such as Bank, University and City. But, in case Korean text, it is difficult to recognize that spatial background because there is few information about usage of letter. In the previous studies, they use machine learning or dictionaries and rules to recognize about spatial information in text such as news and text messages. In this paper, we build a nation dictionaries that refer to information such as 'Korean history' and 'Google maps.' We Also propose a method for recognizing spatial background based on patterns of postposition in Korean sentences comparing to previous works. We are grasp using of postposition with spatial background because Korean characteristics. And we propose a method based on result of morpheme analyze and frequency in a novel text for raising accuracy about recognizing spatial background. The recognized spatial background can help readers to grasp the atmosphere of a novel and to understand the events and atmosphere through recognition of the spatial background of the scene that characters appeared.
