  • This paper revisits politeness expressions in English, exploring their linguistic characteristics and the underlying social dynamics they reflect. Grounded in pragmatic theories, politeness is examined as a phenomenon shaped by societal norms, wherein language users navigate the delicate balance between efficiency and maintaining positive social interactions. Through an analysis of various linguistic devices such as modal auxiliary verbs, progressive and past tenses, depersonalization, and the use of hedges, the study elucidates how speakers endeavor to mitigate potential burdens on listeners and foster smoother communication. By understanding and employing these linguistic strategies, English learners can better navigate the nuances of politeness expressions in the English cultural context. This exploration underscores the pivotal role of politeness in interpersonal communication and highlights its significance in facilitating effective interaction among language users.

  • The study examined the longitudinal relations of preschool children's peer interaction, linguistic and cognitive abilities, and self-control, while taking into account gender differences. The study was conducted with 671 preschoolers from the $5^{th}$, $6^{th}$, and $7^{th}$ wave of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Study (KCYPS). Data were analyzed by means of basic descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlations, and structural equation modeling analysis. Bootstrapping method was also used to determine the significance of indirect effects. The analysis were conducted to find the longitudinal effects of peer interaction at the age of 4 on their self-control at the age of 6, and the mediating effects of linguistics and cognitive abilities at the age of 5 on its associations. The results indicated gender differences among the variables. According to multi-group analysis, there was a significant influence of 4 years' peer interaction on subsequent 5 years' linguistic and cognitive abilities but also on 6 years' self-control across time for boys; however, no significant direct effect of peer interaction on self-control was found for girls. Based on the findings of this study, it can be implied that it is necessary to apply different methods for boys and girls to promote self-control from the influence of peer interaction and linguistic and cognitive abilities.

  • There are tries to unite through consilience in many fields. Interdisciplinary research is an instance of those. Linguistic studies called linguistic informatics or quantitative linguistics is a field of interdisciplinary research related with statistics linguists have studied chiefly statistics and linguistics. In the statistical aspect, there is need to supplement somewhat of the result of researches by linguists. This study shows statistical method can supplement insufficient objectivity in linguistic studies, and examines the way to raise a degree of completion of interdisciplinary research on statistics and linguistics. This study also shows an introduction and application of the statistical method can be useful for the deduction of objective linguistic information in linguistic studies.

  • The purpose of this study is to categorize a landscape adjective list for urban landscape analysis. For this purpose, four methods are used. The first method is to survey the foreign landscape adjective lists such as Feimer's EACL & LACL, VRM suggested vocabulary, and IEA and LI's aesthetic factors, which are commonly used in domestic research. The second method is to analyze vocabulary in Korean linguistic textbook the third is to investigate Korean adjective lists from 36 domestic research. The last is to survey adjectives used to express the urban landscapes. 24 landscapes from BunDdang, GwaCheon, YakSoo and ApGuJeong were presented to 40 subjects, whose responses were collected and categorized. The frequency analysis of the adjectives and landscape factors were processed by SJTOOL, which was programmed for Korean vocabulary analysis. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: Foreign adjective lists were mainly focused on the physical features of landscapes and they also had linguistic problems caused by the translations. Therefore, it is undesirable to use the foreign adjective list directly to analyze Korean urban landscapes. The vocabulary from the linguistic textbook has more variety, but it includes many adjectives irrelevant to the urban landscape. More types of adjectives were used in the researches(890 adjectives/295 types), compared with the result of response survey(1,406 adjectives/270 types). Because some adjectives were partly confusing, it is desirable to categorize the adjectives. The categorized adjectives could therefore be more useful and practical for urban landscape analysis.

  • Recently corpus linguistic analyses enable researchers to examine meanings and structural features of data, that is not detected intuitively. While the potential of corpus linguistic techniques has been established and demonstrated for non-literary data, corpus stylistic analyses have been rarely performed in terms of the analysis of literature. Specifically this paper explores keywords and their role in text analysis, which is primary part of corpus linguistic analyses. This paper focuses on the application of techniques from corpus linguistics and the interpretation of results. This paper addresses the question of what is to be gained from keyword analysis by scrutinizing keywords in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

  • This study aims to establish ways of how languages are used as determination factors for investment decisions among Asian countries where used languages are diversified. According to the analysis result, language segmentation of the investing country increases investment whereas the language segmentation of the invested countries is analyzed as the decreasing factor of investment. Also, it is analyzed that the further the linguistic distance between the investing country and the invested country the more investment increases. In the aspects of approached language distance and investment time selection, along with the increased linguistic distance, the elasticity to foreign direct investment is apprehended to be more flexible than other forms of investment. Such result shows the more segmented the languages of the targeted invested country the more investment cost will increase and therefore the results in linguistic distance can be explained as diversification of the invested country and the result to the forming of bridgehead at the invested area.

  • This paper presents a study on the fuzzy linguistic variable based approach for safety assessment of human body in ELF electromagnetic field considering power system states. To cope with the demand in modern industry, the power system becomes larger in scale, higher in voltage. The advent of high voltage system has increased the relative importance of field effects. The analysis of ELF electromagnetic field based on Quasi-Static Method is introduced while the power system is included to model the expected and/or unexpected uncertainty caused by the load fluctuation and parameter changes. In order to analyze the power system, Monte Carlo simulation method and contingency analysis method are adopted in normal state and alert state, respectively. In the safety assessment of human body, the approach based on fuzzy linguistic variable is employed to overcome the shortcomings resulting from a crisp set concept. The suggested scheme is applied to a sample system(modified IEEE 14 bus system) to validate the usefulness.
