  • The article describes a technique for the measurement of the level of complexity of fracture surfaces by the method of vertical sections, and a performed statistical analysis of the effect of profile lines on the fractographic and fractal parameters of fractures, i.e. the profile line development factor, $R_L$, and the fracture surface development factor, $R_S$, (as defined by the cycloid method), as well as the fractal dimension, $D_C$, (as determined by the chord method), and the fractal dimension, $D_{BC}$, (as determined by the box method). The above-mentioned parameters were determined for fracture surfaces of basalt and gravel concretes, respectively, which had previously been subjected to fracture toughness tests. The concretes were made from mixtures of a water/cement ratio ranging from 0.41 to 0.61 and with a variable fraction of coarse aggregate to fine aggregate, $C_{agg.}/F_{agg.}$, in the range from 1.5 to 3.5. Basalt and gravel aggregate of a fraction to maximum 16 mm were used to the tests. Based on the performed analysis it has been established that the necessary number of concrete fracture profile lines, which assures the reliability of obtained testing results, should amount to 12.

  • The science of toxicology is the understanding of the mechanisms by which exogenous agents produce deleterious effects in biological systems. The actions of chemicals such as drugs are ultimately exerted at the cellular and gene levels. Over the past decade. several in vitro alternative methods such as cultured cells for assessing the toxicity of various xenobiotics have been proposed to reduce the use of animals. In this workshop three advanced methods will be presented. These methods are novel important models for toxicologic studies. Dr. Tabuchis group has establishcd two immortalized gastric surface mucosa cell lines from the pminary cultore of gastric fundic mucosal cells of adult transgenic mice harboring a temperature sensitive simian virus 40 large T-anugen gene. As the immortalized cell lines of various tissues possess unique characteristics to maintain their normal functions for several months, these cell lines are extremely useful for not only toxicity testing but also pharmacological screening in new drug development. Professor Funatsu have studied the formation of spherical multicelluar aggregates of adult rat hepatocytes(spheroid) having tissue like structure. The sphcroid shown thre is a prototype module of an artificial liver support system. Thus, the urea synthesis activity of the artificial liver was maintained at least to days in 100% rat blood plasma. Dr. Takezawa and his coworkers have developed a novel culture system of multicellular spheroids considered 〃organoids〃 by utilizing a thermo-responsive polymer as a substratum of anchorage dependent cells. His final goal is to reconstitute the organoids of various normal organs, e.g., liver, skin etc. and also abnormal deseased organs such as tumor.

  • The objective of this study was to isolate and identify the chemical structure of a biosurfactant produced by Nocardia farcinica strain BN26 isolated from soil, and evaluate its in vitro antitumor activity on a panel of human cancer cell lines. Strain BN26 was found to produce glycolipid biosurfactant on n-hexadecane as the sole carbon source. The biosurfactant was purified using medium-pressure liquid chromatography and characterized as trehalose lipid tetraester (THL) by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Subsequently, the cytotoxic effects of THL on cancer cell lines BV-173, KE-37 (SKW-3), HL-60, HL-60/DOX, and JMSU-1 were evaluated by MTT assay. It was shown that THL exerted concentration-dependent antiproliferative activity against the human tumor cell lines and mediated cell death by the induction of partial oligonucleosomal DNA fragmentation. These findings suggest that THL could be of potential to apply in biomedicine as a therapeutic agent.

  • A new wideband bandstop filter(BSF) with a sharp roll-off characteristic is introduced in a stripline structure in this paper. The BSF consists of two sections: the first is two capacitively coupled $\lambda/4$ short-circuited lines with opposite ground positions, while the second is a capacitively coupled $\lambda/4$ short-circuited line. The BSF provides three transmission zeros within the stopband and better than 22 dB rejection over the whole wireless local area network (WLAN) band from 5.15 to 5.825 GHz. The BSF, cascaded to an U.S. ultra-wideband(UWB: 3.1~10.6 GHz) band-pass filter(BPF), is simulated with HFSS and realized with low-temperature co-fired ceramic(LTCC) green tape with a dielectric constant of 7.8. The measurement results agree well with the HFSS simulation results. The size of the UWB BPF including the BSF is $3{\times}6.3\times0.45\;mm^3$.

  • In this study we use three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations to investigate how the dynamic state of emerging magnetic field is related to the twist of field lines. Emerging magnetic field forms a magnetic structure on the Sun where various kinds of activity such as solar flares, jets, and coronal mass ejections are observed. To understand the physical mechanism for producing such activity, we have to know the dynamic nature of this structure. Since flares are the manifestation of rapidly dissipating electric current in the corona, we also investigate the distribution of current density inside the structure and examine how it depends on the field-line twist. To demonstrate the dynamic structure of emerging magnetic field, we focus on the factors characterizing the geometric property and stratification of emerging magnetic field, such as the curvature of field line and the scale height of field strength. These two factors show that emerging field forms a two-part structure in which the central part is close to a force-free state while the outer marginal part is in a fairly dynamic state where magnetic pressure force is dominant. We discuss how the field-line twist affects the two-part structure and also explain a possible relation between electric current structure and sigmoid observed in a preflare phase.

  • We present the results of the linear analysis for the Parker-Jeans instability in the magnetized gas disks including the effect of cosmic-ray diffusion along the magnetic field lines. We adopted an uni-formly rotating two temperature layered disk with a horizontal magnetic fields and solved the perturbed equations numerically. Fragmentation of gases takes place and filamentary structures are formed by the growth of the instability. Nagai et al. (1998) showed that the direction of filaments being formed by the Parker-Jeans instability depends on the strength of pressure outside the unperturbed gas disk. We found that at some range of external pressures the direction of filaments is also governed by the value of the diffusion coefficient of CR along the magnetic field lines k.

  • Korean trains pass many mountain areas, so the volume of structures like bridge and tunnel has large part of railway lines. Train speed-up naturally needs a straight line in railway, then structures are increasing, and the length of structure has more than 70% in Kyongbu high-speed railway. The stiffness of bridge and tunnel is higher than the soil in the roadbed in spite of dynamic difference in vibration and displacement. Differences in stiffness have more dynamic effects and increase the deformation and destruction in the track and roadbed. This influences passenger's comfort and the safety of operation, and it needs more track maintenance. This study selected tunnel with ballast track, tunnel with concrete track, and structure's approaches with short maintenance cycle in the roadbed and had track acceleration tests and track liner inspections using track master in the field. This study will measure periodically to structure's approaches which have very fast track irregularity and analyze dynamic differences and track irregularity near structure's approaches, so realize the cause of track irregularity of structure's approaches and use basic data for reasonably strengthening method of structure's approaches.

  • This paper presents a tunable bandpass filter based on the varactor-loaded composite right- and left-handed transmission line (CRLH-TL). The proposed filter is composed of one CRLH-TL unit cell, which corresponds to the third-order bandpass filter. The tunable bandpass filter is designed using only lumped-elements. The use of lumped elements saves space and lowers the fabrication cost. The size of the proposed tunable bandpass filter is $17mm{\times}5mm$, neglecting the feed lines and DC lines. All of the varactors are controlled by one DC bias. The center frequency of the bandpass filter can be controlled by varying the value of the varactors. The tunable range of the center frequency is from 412.5 to 670 MHz. The insertion loss is less than 3 dB, the return loss is more than 10 dB in the passband.
