  • In this paper, a new procedure for selecting weighting matrices in linear discrete time quadratic optimal control problem (LQ-problem) is proposed. In LQ-problems, the quadratic weighting matrices are usually decided on trial and error in order to get a good response. But using the proposed method, the quadratic weights are decided in such a way that all poles of the closed loop system are located in a desired region for good responses as well as for stability and values of the quadratic cost function are kept less then a specified value.

  • This paper studies on the design of a looper control system for hot strip mill finisher using ILQ(Inverse Linear Quadratic optimal control) control method. The loopers are placed between each rolling stands and looper control plays an important role in regulating strip tension. The strip tension is controlled by raising and lowering the looper and by changing the speed of main work rolls. Firstly, it is shown from a nonlinear dynamic simulation that the strip tension is more influenced by difference of rolling speed than that of the looper angle. Secondly, a servo controller of the looper is designed using ILQ control method of which the characteristics and algorithms are simply introduced. Finally, the performances of the ILQ servo controller are compared with those of the LQI servo controller from computer simulation. In result, it is shown that the proposed ILQ servo controller has the better performances and robustness far parameter perturbations and disturbances than those of LQI controller.

But using the proposed method, the quadratic weights are decided in such a way that all poles of the closed loop system are located in a desired area for good responses as well as for stability and values of the quadratic cost functional are kept less then a specified value. The closed loop systems constructed by this method have merits of LQ problems as well as those of pole assignment problems. Taking into consideration that little is known about the relationship among the quadratic weights, the poles and the values of cost functional, this procedure is also interesting from the theoretical point of view.

  • This paper studies on the relation between linearization methods and controller gains in the looper ILQ(lnverse Linear Quadratic optimal control) system for hot strip finishing mills. Firstly, two linear models arc respectively derived by a linearization method using Taylor's series expansion and a static state feedback linearization method, respectively, and the linear models are compared with the nonlinear model. Secondly, the looper servo controllers are respectively designed on the basis of two linearization models. Finally, the relation between the performances of two ILQ servo controllers and the linearization methods, and the structures and control gains of two controllers are evaluated by a computer simulation.

  • An optimal control technique designed for simultaneous tracking and quality control for batch processes. The proposed technique is designed by transforming quadratic-criterion based iterative learning control(Q-ILC) into linear quadratic control problem. For real-time quality inferential control, the quality is modeled by linear combination of control input around target qualify and then the relationship between quality and control input can be transformed into time-varying linear state space model. With this state space model, the real-time quality inferential control can be incorporated to LQ control Problem. As a consequence, both the quality variable as well as other controlled variables can progressively reduce their control error as the batch number increases while rejecting real-time disturbances, and finally reach the best achievable states dictated by a quadratic criterion even in case that there is significant model error Also the computational burden is much reduced since the most computation is calculated in off-line. The Proposed control technique is applied to a semi-batch reactor model where series-parallelreactions take place.

  • In this paper, we propose an optimal power control algorithm for CDMA cellular systems. The proposed power control algorithm is based on linear quadratic control theory. As the cellular system includes the changeability of system environment or various noise, Kalman filter is adapted to estimate the time-varying interference. This is the well-known linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) theory. Through this algorithm, power transmission of each mobile with optimal one is more realistic. Simulation results show a fast convergence rate to optimal power value, and a rapid decreasing outage probability.

  • This paper concerns controller design for the Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy systems. The design method proposed in this paper is derived in the framework of the optimal control theory utilizing the piecewise quadratic optimal value functions. The major part of the proposed design procedure consists of solving linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Since LMIs can be solved efficiently within a given tolerance by the recently developed interior point methods, the design procedure of this paper is useful in practice. A design example is given to illustrate the applicability of the proposed method.

  • This paper studies on the feedback linearization of the looper system for hot strip mills, where the looper system plays an important role in regulating the strip tension. Firstly, nonlinear dynamic equations of the looper system are simply introduced. Secondly, using the static feedback linearization algorithm, a linear model of the looper system is obtained, of which usefulness is validated from comparison between the linear model and the nonlinear model, and design of LQI(Linear Ouadratic Integral optimal control) and ILQ (Inverse Linear Quadratic optimal control) looper control systems. In result, it is shown that the linear looper model by the feedback linearization well describes nonlin...

  • There are mainly two types of bang-bang controllers for nominal linear time-invariant (LTI) system. Optimal bang-bang controller is designed based on optimal control theory and suboptimal bang-bang controller is obtained by using Lyapunov stability condition. In this paper, the suboptimal bang-bang control method is extended to LTI system involving both control input saturation and structured real parameter uncertainties by using Lyapunov robust stability condition. Two robust optimal bang-bang controllers are derived by minimizing the time derivative of Lyapunov function subjected to the limit of control input. The one is developed based on the classical quadratic stability(QS), and the other is developed based on the affine quadratic stability(AQS). And characteristics of the two controllers are compared. Especially, bounds of parameter uncertainties which theoretically guarantee robust stability of the two controllers are compared quantitatively for 1DOF vibrating system. Moreover, the validity of robust optimal bang-bang controller based on the AQS is shown through numerical simulations for this system.
