  • We present a high-accuracy digital-to-analog (DA) actuator using a load spring, specially designed to compensate the output displacement errors caused by fabrication errors. The compensated linear DA actuator is capable to change the slope of input-output modulation line in order to compensate fabrication errors. We design, fabricate, and characterize three different prototypes: one uncompensated design and two compensated designs respectively for a specific value and for a given range of fabrication error. The compensated linear DA actuators show the output displacement errors of $-0.20{\pm}0.23{\mu}m\;and\;-0.13{\pm}0.18{\mu}m$, respectively, reduced by 64.3% and 76.8% of the output displacement error, $0.56{\pm}0.20{\mu}m$, produced by the conventional uncompensated linear DA actuator. We experimentally verify the fabrication error compensation capability of the present compensated linear DA actuators, thus demonstrating high-accuracy actuation performance immune to fabrication errors.

  • There is a great demand of micro-actuators for mobile information devices such as SFF optical drives and mobile camera phones. However, conventional magnetic coils of electromagnetic motors are a major obstacle for miniaturization because of their complicated structures and large power consumption. In this paper, a linear ultrasonic motor to actuate focusing lens of mobile devices is proposed. The new actuator uses a ring type bimorph piezoelectric material, and $d_{31}$ mode is adopted for applying linear motion. The interaction between inertia force and friction force makes linear motion by high-frequency saw signal input. The saw signal gives steady forces on the one direction by asymmetric inclination property of the signal itself on time domain. A commercial FEM (ANSYS) was used in this investigation for simulating structural analysis, identification of dynamic property, such as resultant displacement and coupled analysis with piezoelectric material. To evaluate the performance of the new design, a prototype was manufactured and experiments were carried out. Experimental results show the actuator motion of 1.52 mm/s at 10 kHz input signal in 5 V.

  • In this study, we improved control performance of an EMV (electromechanical valve) system using a PM/EM (permanent magnet/electromagnet) hybrid EMA (electromagnetic actuator) and showed the feasibilities of both soft landing and fast transition of the EMV system using a simple PID control. The conventional EMV systems using only EM show significant nonlinear characteristics. Therefore, it is very difficult to control the valve position and several complex control schemes are used. This paper focused on the control performance improvement using a PM/EM hybrid actuator. In particular, a PM is used as a key design parameter such as a bias current of a magnetic bearing in order to improve the linear characteristic of the actuator, although most PM/EM hybrid actuators use a PM as a power saver during valve-open and -closed states. First, a FE (finite element) analysis was performed to confirm its linear static force characteristics. Then, both a test rig and a valve control system were built in order to prove experimentally the control performance improvement of the actuator. Finally, feasibilities of both soft landing and fast transition of the system were shown experimentally through gain-scheduled PID (proportional derivative integral) control.

  • This study proposes the design algorithm of an electromagnetic linear actuator with a divided coil excitation system, such as the colenoid (COL) system, using the equivalent magnetic circuit (EMC) method. Nowadays, the clamping device is used to hold workpiece in the electrically driven chucking system and is needed to produce a huge clamping force of 40 kN like hydraulic system. The design algorithm for electromagnetic linear actuator can be obtained using the EMC method. At first, the parameter map is used to decide the slot width ratio in the initial design. Next, to make the magnetic flux density uniform at each pole, the pole width is adjusted by the pole width adjusting algorithm with EMC. When the dimensions of the electromagnetic linear actuator are decided, the clamping force is calculated to check the desired clamping force. The design results show that it can be used to hold a workpiece firmly instead of using a hydraulic cylinder in a chucking system.

  • This paper deals with the comparison and dynamic behavior of a moving-coil linear oscillatory actuator (MCLOA) with/without a mechanical spring. On the basis of a dynamic simulation model, the dynamic characteristics such as a current and a stroke of the MCLOA without the spring are predicted for various values of frequency. And then, dynamic test results are given to confirm the dynamic simulations. Finally, this paper describes the influence of the spring on the dynamic behavior of the MCLOA from the dynamic experiments of the MCLOA with/without the spring.

  • The present study conducts a series of experiments to develop a novel air supplying module for a micro fuel cell using piezoelectric linear actuator. An intermittently and operating air breathing module with reciprocating motion of the linear actuator has been suggested in the present study. A test bench for a micro fuel cell system has been constructed to estimate performance of the active fuel cell system using the air supplying module. With the stroke and operating duty as main control parameters, the optimal operating method of the air supplying module has been discussed.

  • The traditional engine valve train in a combustion engine is the mechanically driven camshaft system that provides one-fixed valve timing. The variable valve timing (VVT), however, is highly required to achieve the significant improvement in fuel economy. To achieve VVT in combustion engine, the solenoid type of actuator had been developed in past years, but it requires current in all operation period, the starting is difficult and the efficiency is low. In this paper, a new linear actuator using permanent magnet (PM) is proposed and verified its feasibility by finite element (FE) analysis.

  • Piezoelectric Fiber Composites with Interdigitated Electrodes (PFCIDE) were previously introduced as an alternative to monolithic wafers with conventional electrodes for applications of structural actuation. This paper is an investigation into the performance improvement of piezoelectric fiber composite actuators by changing the matrix material. This paper presents a modified micro-electromechanical model of a piezoelectric fiber/piezopolymer matrix composite actuator with interdigitated electrodes (PFPMIDE). Various concepts from different backgrounds including three-dimensional linear elastic and dielectric theories have been incorporated into the present linear piezoelectric model. The rule of mixture and the modified method to calculate the effective properties of fiber composites are extended to apply to the PFPMIDE model. The new model is validated comparing with available experimental data and other analytical results.

  • In the development of positioning device for precision manufacturing and measuring, the friction from mechanical contact causes serious decrease of performance. In this study, we studied about variable reluctance type contact-free linear actuator to overcome drawbacks from friction. In the view of electromagnetics, we analyzed and derived theoretical magnetic force equation and designed structure for generating suspension and propulsion force simultaneously. In the view of dynamics, we derived equation of motion and identified the stability of the system. Finally, we verified the feasibility of the proposed system.

  • With the development of precision manufacturing technologies, the importance of precision positioning devices is increasing. Conventional actuators, dual stage or mechanically contacting type, have limitation in coping with performance demands. As a possible solution, magnetic suspension technology was studied. Such a contact-free system has advantages in terms of high accuracy, low production cost and easy adaptability to high precision manufacturing processes. This paper deals with magnetically suspended multi-degrees of freedom actuator which can realize large linear motion. In this paper, the operating principle is explained with the magnetic force analysis, and the equations of motion are derived. Experimental results of the implemented system are also given.
