  • For an accurate on-line measurement of the ship's attitude the paper develops an intelligent sensing system which uses one servo-type accelerometer and two servo-type inclinometers appropriately located on the ship. By considering the dynamics of the servo-controlled rigid pendulums of the inclinometers, linear equations for the rolling and pitching of the ship are derived separately from each other. Moreover, one accelerometer is used for extracting the heaving signal. Through the introduction of linear dynamic models and the linear observation equations for the heaving, rolling and pitching, the on-line measurement of the three signals can be reduced to the state estimation of the linear dynamic systems. A bank of Kalman filters is adaptively used to achieve the on-line accurate state estimation and to overcome changes in parameters in the linear dynamic models.

  • In order to improve the measurement accuracy of the 6-dimensional accelerometer, the cross coupling compensation method of the accelerometer needs to be studied. In this paper, the non-linear error caused by cross coupling of piezoelectric six-dimensional accelerometer is compensated online. The cross coupling filter is obtained by analyzing the cross coupling principle of a piezoelectric six-dimensional accelerometer. Linear and non-linear fitting methods are designed. A two-level calibration hybrid compensation algorithm is proposed. An experimental prototype of a piezoelectric six-dimensional accelerometer is fabricated. Calibration and test experiments of accelerometer were carried out. The measured results show that the average non-linearity of the proposed algorithm is 2.2628% lower than that of the least square method, the solution time is 0.019382 seconds, and the proposed algorithm can realize the real-time measurement in six dimensions while improving the measurement accuracy. The proposed algorithm combines real-time and high precision. The research results provide theoretical and technical support for the calibration method and online compensation technology of the 6-dimensional accelerometer.

  • Hand Accelerometers are widely used to detect human motion patterns in real-time. It is essential to reliably identify which type of activity is performed by human subjects. This rests on having accurate template of each activity. Many human activities are represented as a set of multiple time-series data from such sensors, which are mostly non-stationary and non-linear in nature. This requires a method which can effectively extract patterns from non-stationary and non-linear data. To achieve such a goal, we propose the method to apply Hilbert-Huang Transform which is known to be an effective way of extracting non-stationary and non-linear components from time-series data. It is applied on samples of accelerometer data to determine its effectiveness.

  • We analyzed the relationship between the normal measurement of the seismic accelerometer (SA) and the error rate of the output voltage linear ratio to propose an evaluation method to determine whether the SA in use is measuring normally. Utilizing a test bed, the regular operation of SA in use was evaluated using acceleration data measured through impact tests since there are no regulations regarding performance testing of SA in use. For the used SA, the error rate of the output voltage linear ratio, which is a major performance criterion, was evaluated. We analyzed common characteristics of the SA that satisfied the impact test and the performance criteria of the output voltage linear ratio error rate. The results indicated that we must consider the decreasing trend and convergence of the error rate as the measurement angle increases, ensuring that the average value of the output voltage linear ratio error rate is within 1%.

  • In this study, problems of RTK (Real Time Kinematic)-GPS (Global Positioning System) and an accelerometer sensor when applied to structures were experimentally identified through a comparison between results of the displacement measurement using the RTK-GPS, the accelerometer, and LVDT (Linear variable differential transformer). Integrated displacement was calculated by the improved RTK-GPS and accelerometer on the frequency of observation and positioning accuracy. This integrated displacement was also compared with that of LVDT to check the validity of application and feasibility.

  • In this work the dynamics of an electromagnetic levitation system is described by a set of three first order nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The objective is to design a digital linear controller which takes the inherent instability of the uncontrolled system and the disturbing force into consideration. The controller is made by employing digital linear quadratic(LQ) design methodology and the unknown state variables are estimated by the kalman filter. The state estimation is performed using not only an air gap sensor but also both an air gap sensor and a piezoelectric accelerometer. The design scheme resulted in a digital linear controller having good stability and performance robustness in spite of various modelling errors. In case of using both a gap sensor and an accelerometer for the state estimation, the control input was rather stable than that in a system with gap sensor only and the controller dealt with the disturbing force more effectively.

  • In this paper, a small and effective attitude estimation system for a humanoid robot was developed. Four small inertial sensors were packed and used for inertial measurements(3D accelerometer and three 1D gyroscopes.) An effective 3D pose estimation algorithm for low cost DSP using an extended Kalman filter was developed and evaluated. The 3D pose estimation algorithm has a very simple structure composed by 3 modules of a linear acceleration estimator, an external acceleration detector and an pseudo-accelerometer output estimator. The algorithm also has an effective switching structure based on probability and simple feedback loop for the extended Kalman filter. A special test equipment using linear motor for the testing of the 3D pose sensor was developed and the experimental results showed its very fast convergence to real values and effective responses. Popular DSP of TMS320F2812 was used to calculate robot's 3D attitude and translated acceleration, and the whole system were packed in a small size for humanoids robots. The output of the 3D sensors(pitch, roll, 3D linear acceleration, and 3D angular rate) can be transmitted to a humanoid robot at 200Hz frequency.

  • This paper presents a study on the calibration of accelerometer data in the gyroscope free inertial navigation system(GFINS) using fuzzy inference system(FIS). The conventional INS(inertial navigation system) which can measure yaw rate and linear velocity using inertial sensors as the gyroscope and accelerometer. However, the INS is difficult to design as small size and low power because it uses the gyroscope. To solve the problem, the GFINS which does not have the gyroscope have been studied actively. However, the GFINS has cumulative error problem still. Hence, this paper proposes Fuzzy-GFINS which can calibrate the data of an accelerometer using FIS consists of two inputs that are ratio between linear velocity of the autonomous ground vehicle(AGV) and the accelerometer and ratio between linear velocity of the encoders and the accelerometer. To evaluate the proposed Fuzzy-GFINS, we made the AGV with Mecanum wheels and applied the proposed Fuzzy-GFINS. In experimental result, we verified that the proposed method can calibrate effectively data of the accelerometer in the GFINS.

  • Bump bonded piezoesistive silicon accelerometer was fabricated by the porous silicon micromachining and th eprocess technique of integrated circuit. The output voltage of the accelerometer fabricated on (111)-oreiented Si substrates with n/n$^{+}$n triple layers showed good linear characteristic of less than 1%. The measured sensitivity and the resonant frequency was about 743 .mu.V/g and 2.04 kHz, respectively. And the transverse sensitivity of 5.2% was measured from the accelerometer. Also, to investigate an influence on the output characteristics of the sensor due to bump bonding, the values of the piezoresistors were measured through thermal-cycling test in the temperature variation form -50 to 120.deg. C. Then, there was 0.014% resistance changes about 3.61 k.ohm., so sthe output charcteristics of the sensor was less affected by bump bonding.g.

  • In this Paper, the PC input device using MEMS gyros and accelerometer is newly developed, so that it can measure rotation rate and linear acceleration of the human body in space. In General, the human motion has 6 degree of freedom but 2 degree of freedom is enough PC monitor with 2D display. Therefore the simple method is proposed to achieve minimum degree of freedom. It is also applied to the PC mouse. This method can be expanded to the input device for internet set-top box or internet TV.
