  • In this paper, we propose an efficient and robust lane detection method for detecting immediate left and right lane boundaries of the lane in the roads. The proposed method are based on hyperbolic lane model and the reliable line segment clustering. The reliable line segment cluster is determined from the most probable cluster obtained from clustering line segments extracted by the efficient LSD algorithm. Experiments show that the proposed method works robustly against lanes with difficult environments such as ones with occlusions or with cast shadows in addition to ones with dashed lane marks, and that the proposed method performs better compared with other lane detection methods on an CMU/VASC lane dataset.

  • We use edge detection technique for the input image to extract the entire edges of the object in the image and then select only the edges that construct the outline of the object. By examining the positional relation between these pixels composing the outline, a simplified version of the outline of the object in the input image is generated by removing unnecessary pixels while maintaining the condition of connection of the outline. For each pixel constituting the outline, its direction is calculated by examining the positional relation with the next pixel. Then, we group the consecutive pixels with same direction into one and then change them to a line segment instead of a point. Among those line segments composing the outline of the object, a line segment whose length is smaller than a predefined minimum length of acceptable line segment is removed by merging it into one of the adjacent line segments. As a result, an outline composed of line segments of over a certain length is obtained through this process.

  • This paper presents a method for line segment grouping used for detection of various building roofs. First, by using edge preserving filtering. noise is eliminated and then images are segmented by watershed algorithm, which preserves location of edge pixels. To extract line segments between control points from boundary of each region, we calculate curvature of each pixel on the boundary and then find the control points. Line linking is performed according to direction and length of line segments and finally the location of line segments is adjusted using gradient magnitudes of all pixels of the line segment. The algorithm has been applied to aerial imagery and the results show accurate building roof detection.

  • This paper proposes a method to detect vanishing points of an indoor scene using line segment classification. Two-stage vanishing points detection is carried out to detect vanishing point in indoor scene efficiently. In the first stage, the method examines whether the image composition is a one-point perspective projection or a two-point one. If it is a two-point perspective projection, a horizontal line through the detected vanishing point is found for line segment classification. In the second stage, the method detects two vanishing points exactly using line segment classification. The method is evaluated by synthetic images and an image DB. In the synthetic image which some noise is added in, vanishing point detection error is under 16 pixels until the percent of the noise to the image becomes 60%. Vanishing points detection ratio by A.Quattoni and A.Torralba's image DB is over 87%.

  • This paper represents 3D line segment extraction method, which can be used in generating 3D rooftop model. The core of our method is that 3D line segment is extracted by using line fitting of elevation data on 2D line coordinates of ortho-image. In order to use elevations in line fitting, the elevations should be reliable. To measure the reliability of elevation, in this paper, we employed the concept of self-consistency. We carry out the experiment of 3D line extraction using synthetic images generated from Avenches data set of Ascona aerial images.

  • This paper presents an algorithm for 3D building reconstruction from a pair of stereo aerial images using the 3D building model and the linear segments of building. Direct extraction of linear segments from original building images using parametric building model is attempted instead of employing the conventional procedures such as edge detection, linear approximation and line linking A segment measure function is simultaneously applied to each line segment extracted in order to improve the accuracy of building detection comparing to individual linear segment detection. The algorithm has been applied to pairs of stereo aerial images and the result showed accurate detection and reconstruction of buildings.

  • In this paper, neddle detection algorithm for the removal of needle stuck into skin in oriental clinic is presented. First, in the proposed method, potential candidate areas of each needle are selected by using the morphological open operation in a gray image, and the false candidates are removed by considering their area size. Next, edge points are extracted using canny edge detector in selected candidate areas, line segments are approximated using the edge points. Based on the direction of line segment and the distance between two line segments, two main line segments of the needle are extracted. The final verification of needle is accomplished by using the morphological analysis of these two line segments. In the experiments, the detection rate of proposed method reaches to 97.5% for the 16 images containing 119 needles.

  • Rectangular shape detection plays an important role in many image recognition systems. However, it requires continued research for its improved performance. In this study, we propose a strong rectangular shape detection algorithm, which combines the canny edge and line detection algorithms based on the perpendicularity and parallelism of a rectangle. First, we use the canny edge detection algorithm in order to obtain an image edge map. We then find the edge of the contour by using the connected component and find each edge contour from the edge map by using a DP (douglas-peucker) algorithm, and convert the contour into a polyline segment by using a DP algorithm. Each of the segments is compared with each other to calculate parallelism, whether or not the segment intersects the perpendicularity intersecting corner necessary to detect the rectangular shape. Using the perpendicularity and the parallelism, the four best line segments are selected and whether a determined the rectangular shape about the combination. According to the result of the experiment, the proposed rectangular shape detection algorithm strongly showed the size, location, direction, and color of the various objects. In addition, the proposed algorithm is applied to the license plate detecting and it wants to show the strength of the results.
