  • Currently, separated buses were increased to limit a fault currents in power transmission system. However, separated buses caused bad influences such as a decrease of reliability and stability. Superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) was proposed to limit a fault current lately and that has many merits beside any other solutions. Therefore, we proposed the install of Superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) in power transmission system with separated bus. And our proposal was verified by reliability of power system.

  • Our research team proposed a flux-offset type fault current limiter as a new limiter. The flux-offset type fault current limiter uses a fault current limit technology based on the flux offset principle of the primary and secondary windings of a transformer. Stable fault current limit characteristics were achieved through a preliminary study. However, it was discovered that the initial fault current was not limited. Therefore, in this paper, a high-speed interrupter and a superconducting element were separately applied to the secondary winding of the flux-offset type fault current limiter and the operating characteristics were comparatively analyzed. In the experiment, when the superconducting element was applied to the secondary winding of the transformer, the initial fault current was limited while the limitation in the operation time was further shortened.

  • The stability of Power system installed Hi-Tc Superconducting Fault Current Limiter(SFCL) is analyzed as a process of developing SFCL. For investigation, a simple mimic system(only one generator) is assumed and then the circuit with SFCL in that system is solved for transient performance. In case the SFCL is installed in the power system, it protected synchronization more effectively both in symmetrical 3-phase fault and single phase line to ground fault in that the machine remains in synchronism for the more time than of without superconducting fault current limiter. It shows that the superconducting fault current limiter not only limits fault current but also protest synchronism. So for design of this SFCL, its synchronism protection property must be considered.

  • In this paper was proposed a flux offset-type fault current limiter as means of reducing fault currents. To secure the operation reliability of a flux offset-type fault current limiter, constructed a simulation system to analyze its operation characteristics by generating a double line-to-line fault. According to the test results, the system performed stably without any impedance. However, when an accident occurred, the flux-offset of magnetic was not occurred. Because of this, any impedance occurred at circuit. It was confirmed that the impedance was low and fast to limit the fault current. At this time, the fault current limited rate was about 95%.

  • With increasing demand of power, the equipment of power system is enlarging and the absolute capacity is going up. As a result, when a fault occurs, the fault current is consistently increasing. Therefore, I suggested some solution for limiting the fault current more efficiently. This study shows the characteristics of superconducting limiting elements and normal conducting elements combined with a transformer. We performed a short-circuit test about the fault current by using SCR switching control system operated from a CT. When short circuit accidents happened in the secondary side of a transformer, fault currents flowed and a SCR switching control system was operated. It resulted in a decrease of the fault current in the limited elements of third winding connected in parallel. For this test, we used YBCO thin films and normal conducting elements as the limited elements. Within a cycle, a superconducting fault current limiter with YBCO thin films reduced more than 90% of fault current because the resistance of superconducting elements sustainedly grew. On the other hand, the limiter with normal conductors limited as much as a set value because its resistance characteristic was linear. Consequently, in case of the limiter with superconductor, limiting range of the circuit was wide but the range of protective detection was undefined. In contrast, as for the limiter with normal conductors, limiting range and protection duty were appropriate.

  • A rapid increase in power capacity in a power system can seriously reduce system reliability by causing the fault capacity to exceed the breaking capacity of circuit breaker. Fault current limiter is a practical and effective way to improve reliability by limiting fault capacity to the breaking capacity level. In this study, in order to help develop an application methodology when applying fault current limiters to power systems, first the topology and operating principles of each type of fault current limiters was reviewed, and the main advantages and disadvantages was compared. Next, to verify the effect of applying fault current limiter to the power system, the power system in which the fault current limiter was introduced was modeled. Finally, after simulating a three-phase short-circuit fault using EMTP-RV, the effect of application was verified by comparing the fault current before and after application of the fault current limiter and confirming that the fault current was reduced by the fault current limiter.

  • Under the full frontal crash event, seatbelt system is the most typical and primary restraint device that prevents the second impact between an occupant and vehicle interior parts by limiting the forward motion of an occupant in the vehicle occupant packaging space. Today's restraint systems typically include the three-point seat belt with the pretensioner and the load limiter. A pretensioner preemptively tightens the seat belts removing any slack between a passenger and belt webbing which leads to early restraint of a passenger. After that a load limiter controls level of belt load by releasing the belt webbing to reduce occupant injurys. In this study, load characteristics of load limiters are optimized by the computer simulation with a MADYMO model for a frontal impact against the rigid wall at 56kph and then we suggest performance requirements. We derived optimum load characteristic from the results using four vehicle simulation models represented by the vehicle. Based on the results, we suggest the performance from the results of the second optimization using the simulation considering the design and the standardization. Finally, the performance requirements is verified by the sled tests including the load limiter device for the full vehicle condition.

  • The energy-absorbing characteristic of impact limiters affects the cask design so significantly that it should be evaluated as accurate as possible. The objective of this study is to find the influence of the impact limiter's steel case and gusset plates which enclose the shock absorbing cellular material on the impact energy absorption. The influence of impact limiter's steel case and gusset plate stiffeners on the impact energy absorption behavior under horizontal drop impact was evaluated for a radioactive isotope transport cask. Though the impact limiters mitigate the impact damage of the cask, the impact limiter's steel case and gusset plate stiffeners increase the impact force so significantly that should be designed as soft as possible. The impact analysis without considering impact limiter's steel case and gusset plates stiffener gives non-conservative results, so the stiffness of the steel case and gusset plates should be considered in impact analysis.

  • With the development in industry, power demand has increased rapidly. As consumption of power has increased, Demand for new power line and electric capacity has risen. However, in the event of fault, problems occur in extending the range of fault coverage and increasing fault current. In these reasons, protection devise is recognized as the prevention of an accident and fault current. This paper dealt with minimizing fault propagation and limiting fault current by adjusting fault current limiter (FCL) with fast interrupter. At this point, we compared and analyzed characteristics between non-inductive resistance and fault current which is limited by superconducting units. In normal state of the power system, power was supplied to the load, but when fault occurred, the interrupter was operated as CT which detected the over-current. Its operation made the limitation of fault current through a FCL. We concluded that the limiter using superconducting units was more efficient with the increase of power voltage. Superconducting fault current limiter with the fast interrupter prevented the spread of a fault, and improved reliability of power system.
