  • n accordance with the National Health Promotion Act of 1995, newly designed National Health and Nutrition Survey was carried out in winter of 1998. Although this survey amended most of the problems noted in previous Nutrition Surveys, it still had a limitation in reflecting seasonal variation in food intake due to the survey period which was confined to November and December. In order to counterbalance this limitation and estimate the yearly food intake of Korean population, three seasonal nutrition surveys were taken place in spring, summer, and fall of 1999. Seasonal Nutritional survey targeted 15 households each in 60 nationwide primary sampling units(PSUS) which were part of 200 PSUS of 1998 National Health and Nutrition Survey. Therefore, total of 2,700 households were surveyed in 3 seasons. The interviewers visited each household members and carried out face to face interview on household. Daily food intake was monitored using 24 hour recall method. According to the survey results, fruits, beverage and alcohol intake showed large variation with season while processed foods showed almost no variation. And intake of vegetables and fruits were influenced by their own harvesting time and had impact on the list of foods consumed most. With the result of the 1998 NHNS, this study made it possible to estimate the yearly average food intake of Korean population. The result of this survey is expected to be used in planning food supply and setting tolerance level of contaminants of each foods at the government level.

  • Nutrient limitation was examined for the Dongbak Lake based on bioassay experiments and analyses of long-term monitoring data. From the results of data analyses, molar ratios of TN/TP and DIN/DIP were higher than 16 : 1 suggesting that phytoplankton growth was potentially limited by phosphorus. Phytoplankton responded to the addition of phosphates in the incubation experiments for all seasons whereas phytoplankton did not respond to other nutrients such as ammonia, nitrate and silicates. Size fraction (net and nano size) of phytoplankton also responded to the addition of phosphorus indicating that phytoplankton growth was limited by phosphorus in the Dongbok Lake. There was also a taxonomic shift from euglenophyceae to bacillariophyceae after addition of phosphate during warm season especially.

  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to evaluate different types of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) testing for characterizing the road cavity detection. The impulse and step-frequency-type GPR tests were conducted on a full-scale testbed with an artificial void installation. After analyzing the response signals of GPR tests for detecting the road cavity, the characteristics of each GPR response was evaluated for a suitable selection of GPR tests. METHODS : Two different types of GPR tests were performed to estimate the limitation and accuracy for detecting the cavities underneath the asphalt pavement. The GPR signal responses were obtained from the testbed with different cavity sizes and depths. The detection limitation was identified by a signal penetration depth at a given cavity for impulse and step-frequency-type GPR testing. The unique signal characteristics was also observed at cavity sections. RESULTS : The impulse-type GPR detected the 500-mm length of cavity at a depth of 1.0 m, and the step-frequency-type GPR detected the cavity up to 1.5 m. This indicates that the detection capacity of the step-frequency type is better than the impulse type. The step-frequency GPR testing also can reflect the howling phenomena that can more accurately determine the cavity. CONCLUSIONS :It is found from this study that the step-frequency GPR testing is more suitable for the road cavity detection of asphalt pavement. The use of step-frequency GPR testing shows a distinct image at the cavity occurrences.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of upper extremity exercise and Bandage on the edema and range of motion. Complex decongestive physiotherapy was one of the latest methods to deal with the limitation of range of motion and the edema that were the prime problems of patients with lymphedema. Methods : Twenty patients undergone mastectomy were participated in this study voluntarily. They had lymphedema on upper extremity and partial limitation of range of motion. The subjects had been treated with upper extremity home exercise and complex decongestive physiotherapy with Bandage for 4 weeks. The measure of these patients with upper extremity edema was included: the volume, arm circumfenence and range of motion. These were measured two times: before the treatment, after 4 weeks of the treatment. Results : The upper extremity edema of patients treated home exercise group and complex decongestive physiotherapy group with Bandage was definitely decreased (p<0.05). Moreover, the upper volume of those who were the same condition also significantly shrank and patients' arm circumferences of upper arm breathtakingly diminished as well (p<0.05). But home exercise group patients' arm circumferences of forearm was not remarkable(p>0.05). However, patients' range of motion who were treated with upper extremity exercise were evidently increased when compared to that of the before treatment (p<0.05). Conclusion : Complex decongestive physiotherapy and bandage performed by physical therapist increased the ROM of upper arm and reduced the edema in patients with lymphedema.

  • PURPOSE: This study was to determine the effect of the plane of movement (sagittal plane vs. scapular plane) and shoulder flexion angle ($90^{\circ}$ vs. $130^{circ}$) during scapular protraction exercises in healthy subjects by investigating the elecromyographic (EMG) activities of the serratus anterior (SA), upper trapezius (UT), and pectoralis major (PM). METHODS: Twenty-one healthy subjects participated in this study. Subjects performed maximal scapular protraction at the $90^{\circ}$ or $130^{\circ}$ shoulder flexion angles in the sagittal or scapular planes. Surface EMG was recorded from the SA and UT, and PM muscles. Dependent variables were examined by 2 (plane) ${\times}$ 2 (angle) repeated measures of analysis of variance (ANOVA). RESULTS: Significantly increased EMG activities in the SA and UT were found during scapular protraction exercise at the $130^{\circ}$ shoulder flexion angle in the sagittal and scapular plane. Also, EMG activity of the PM significantly decreased at the $130^{\circ}$ shoulder flexion angle in the sagittal plane and the $90^{\circ}$ and $130^{\circ}$ shoulder flexion in the scapular plane. CONCLUSION: we recommend scapular protraction exercise at the $90^{\circ}$ shoulder flexion in the sagittal plane to selectively strengthen the SA muscle with limitation of upper trapezius activity and at the $130^{\circ}$ shoulder flexion in the scapular plane to selectively strengthen the SA muscle with limitation of pectoralis major activity.

  • A method is presented to alter the geometry of the conventional linearly shaped wire antenna for increasing its bandwidth. The synthesis is two-demensionally symmetric and is based on the minimization of frequency-dependence of the boresight far-field electric field intensity. The current distribution on the wire is calculated by Galerkin method using pulse functions. The shaping limitation for wide-band characteristics is still found because of standing waves due to reflected waves from antenna ends. The limitation overcome by a distribution of resistive loads near ends of wire. The antenna loaded resistively has flat characteristics satisfying a power gain of $6.5\pm1.1$dBi and VSWR of at most 2 over 10:1 bandwidth. The results are verified by comparing with similar results for the conventional linear V-dipole.

  • The position effects on the abortion of flowers, fruits, and ovules were examined in relation to the resource limitation hypothesis using a temperate legume species, Vicia cracca. Fifty plants were randomly sampled from a natural population located at the Belmont Conservation Site in Belmont, MA, USA. Due to indeterminant growth and acropetal flowering of this species, the position of flower or fruit on the plant was able to be coded by the combination of architectural levels such as plant half (lower and upper half) and inflorescence half (lower and upper half) within each plant half. Overall, only 17.3% of the flowers on an inflorescence began to develop into fruits, while overall 36.0% of the fruits initiated failed to mature. Consequently, 11.5% of the flowers successfully matured into fruits. The mean flower number per inflorescence differed significantly among plants as well as between plant halves. Although the probability of fruit initiation was higher in the lower halves of both plant and inflorescence than in the upper halves of the latter, fruit abortion rate differed significantly only between plant halves. The overall mean seed set was 33.6%, implying that about two out of six ovules in a fruit matured into seeds. The seed set was independent of both plant identity and architectural level unlike other reproductive characters examined. When the ovule developmental stage was examined on data pooled over all fruits, the proportion of ovules in varying developmental stages decreased in order of early abortion, seed maturation, late abortion, and seed predation (48.4, 34.9, 12.2, and 4.5%, respectively). A within-fruit ovule position was also used as a class variable for the analysis of position effects on ovule development. All architectural levels considered exerted singificant influence over the ovule development. In particular, ovule development was strongly affected by the within-fruit ovule position. Ovules in both extreme ends within a fruit tended to abort early, while those in the middle position were more likely to mature into seeds. The strong position effects detected from the flowering to seed maturation stage were interpreted as an indication of competitive interaction among reproductive characters which are largely constrained by plant architecture.

  • The production of extracellular polysaccharide by Methylomonas mucosa (NRRL B-5696) was investigated. The microorganism uses methanol as the carbon source for their growth and produces exopolysaccharides. The productivity of exopolysaccharides was investigated under various culture modes: batch, fed-batch and continuous culture. In flask culture the growth of cell mass and the production of polysaccharide were inhibited at above 1% (v/v) methanol. At 1%(v/v) methanol maximum specific growth rate was obtained. As C/N ratio (g methanol/g ammonium sulfate) increased, polysaccharide production increased and cells mass decreased. Magnesium ion was also found to be essential for the polysaccharide production. In batch culture the production of polysaccharides was more affected by the specific growth rate than the cell concentration. In fed-batch culture the concentration of polysaccharide was 4 times higher than that of batch culture, but the yield was lower. The productivity of fed-batch with continuous feeding was higher than that of batch or fed-batch with intermittent feeding. This is due to no methanol limitation or inhibition that used to occur in fed-batch culture with intermittent feeding. In continuous culture pure oxygen was supplied to avoid the oxygen limitation. As the dilution rate in- creased up to 0.21 h-1, the yield and productivity increased. The solution viscosity of the produced polysaccharide obtained from above increased exponentially with the concentration of polysaccharide.
