This paper presents a novel method for predicting the failure probability of structural or mechanical systems subjected to random loads and material properties involving multiple design points. The method involves Multicut High Dimensional Model Representation (Multicut-HDMR) technique in conjunction with moving least squares to approximate the original implicit limit state/performance function with an explicit function. Depending on the order chosen sometimes truncated Cut-HDMR expansion is unable to approximate the original implicit limit state/performance function when multiple design points exist on the limit state/performance function or when the problem domain is large. Multicut-HDMR addresses this problem by using multiple reference points to improve accuracy of the approximate limit state/performance function. Numerical examples show the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed approach in estimating the failure probability.

The deterioration of PC box girder may cause serious effect on the durability of PC structure compared to that of RC structures. In the durability assessment of PC box girder bridges, a quantitive model on crack width is considered as a measure of durability. This study suggests a durability limit state model for PC box girder bridges. This durability limit state model in formulated based on the conventional models on the cracks in concrete. And the allowable crack width is taken as an assumed value established by the design specification or provided by the maintenance authority of the structure.
The goals of this study are to investigate the feasibility of the reference state approach in determining the generalized soil-water characteristic curve that is essential for characterization of unsaturated soil behavior. The soil-water characteristic curves are obtained from a number of specimens of fine-grained residual soils compacted with different void ratios. Based on the experimental test results, the feasibility of using the liquid limit state as the reference state for predicting the soil-water characteristic curve are verified. Finally, through the regression analysis of experimental data using the equation of Fredlund and Xing (1994), a reliable method is proposed to predict the generalized soil-water characteristic curve of fine-grained residual soils using the liquid limit state as the reference.
Steel fiber may be used to raise the effectiveness and safety of reinforced concrete structure and to relax its brittle-fracture behavior. However it is to be clearly stated that the uncertainty for the strength of fiber reinforced concrete(SFRC) is rather increased. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the safety of SFRC beam using reliability analysis incorporating realistic uncertainty. This study presents the statistical data and proposes the limit state model to analyze the reliability of SFRC bear In order to verify the efficiency of the proposed limit state model, its numerical application and sensitivity analysis were performed for a continuous SFRC beam. From the results of the numerical analysis, it is founded that the reliability of SFRC beam is significantly difficult from the conventional RC beams and proposed limit state model (or SFRC beam is more rational compared with that for conventional RC beams. Then it may be stated that the reliability analysis of SFRC beams must be carried out for the development of design criteria and the safety assessment.
Construction of a new cavern close to an existing cavern will result in a modification of the state of stresses in a zone around the existing cavern as interaction between the twin caverns takes place. Extensive plane strain finite difference analyses were carried out to examine the deformations induced by excavation of underground twin caverns. From the numerical results, a fairly simple nonparametric regression algorithm known as multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) has been used to relate the maximum key point displacement and the percent strain to various parameters including the rock quality, the cavern geometry and the in situ stress. Probabilistic assessments on the serviceability limit state of twin caverns can be performed using the First-order reliability spreadsheet method (FORM) based on the built MARS model. Parametric studies indicate that the probability of failure $P_f$ increases as the coefficient of variation of Q increases, and $P_f$ decreases with the widening of the pillar.
To ensure durability and light weight of bridges, high-strength concrete is required for long-span deck slabs. Such a technology eventually extends the life of bridges and improves the economic efficiency. The results of this study suggests a formula for calculating the minimum thickness of long-span deck slabs built with high strength concrete. The minimum thickness is proposed based on the limit states indicated in the CEB-FIP Model Code and the Korean Highway Bridge Design Code(limit state design). The design compressive strength of concrete used for the study is 80MPa. Moreover, the required thickness for satisfying the flexural capacity and limiting deflection is estimated considering the limit state load combination. The formula for minimum thickness of deck slabs is proposed considering the ultimate limit state(ULS) and the serviceability limit state(SLS) of bridges, and by comparing the Korean Highway Bridge Design Code and similar previous studies. According to the research finding, the minimum thickness of long-span deck slab is more influenced by deflection limit than flexural capacity.
One of the main objectives of this study is to propose a realistic limit state model for reliability-based safety assessment of precast segmental prestressed concrete box girder bridges, considering 1) combined effects of bending, shear and torsional forces, and 2) the difference between transverse reinforcments of box girder. A improved limit state model is derived from a modified interaction equation compared with the Bruno's equation. A Drectional sampling algorithm is used for reliability analysis of the proposed model.
The minimum thickness of long-span deck slab is proposed by checking the limit state according to the Korean highway bridge design code(limit state design). Both minimizing thickness and ensuring safety of deck slab are important design factors to increase a competitive price of the long span deck slabs. The required thicknesses for satisfying flexural capacity, preventing punching shear failure and limiting deflection were calculated by considering KL-510 load model which has increased total load compared to DB 24 from 432 kN to 510 kN. The results of the required thickness for various limit states were compared to propose the minimum thickness as a function of span length of deck slabs. The proposed minimum thickness is influenced by satisfying flexural capacity and limiting deflection. It turns out to be similar compared to the results of the previous study by ultimate strength design method even if the live load model was increased in total weights.
Nuclear power plants under expansion and under construction in China are mostly located in coastal areas, which means they are at risk of suffering strong earthquakes and subsequent tsunamis. This paper presents a safety analysis for a new reinforced concrete containment vessel in such events. A finite element method-based model was built, verified, and first used to understand the seismic performance of the containment vessel under earthquakes with increased intensities. Then, the model was used to assess the safety performance of the containment vessel subject to an earthquake with peak ground acceleration (PGA) of 0.56g and subsequent tsunamis with increased inundation depths, similar to the 2011 Great East earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Results indicated that the containment vessel reached Limit State I (concrete cracking) and Limit State II (concrete crushing) when the PGAs were in a range of 0.8-1.1g and 1.2-1.7g, respectively. The containment vessel reached Limit State I with a tsunami inundation depth of 10 m after suffering an earthquake with a PGA of 0.56g. A site-specific hazard assessment was conducted to consider the likelihood of tsunami sources.
