In this paper a practical limit load estimating procedure is proposed for general pipe-elbow structures subjected to complex loading (in-plane and out-of-plane bending, internal pressure and axial force). The explicit calculating formulae are presented on the basis of theoretical analysis combined with numerical simulation. Von Mises' yield criterion is adopted in both analytical and numerical calculation. The finite element examination shows that the method provides a simple but satisfactory prediction of pipe structures in engineering plastic analysis.
A reliability analysis method is proposed in this paper based on the maximum entropy (MaxEnt) principle in which constraints are specified in terms of the fractional moments instead of integer moments. Then a multiplicative dimensional reduction method (M-DRM) is introduced to compute the fractional moments. The method is applicable for both explicit and implicit limit state functions of complex structures. After two examples illustrate the accuracy and efficiency of this method in comparison to the Monte Carlo simulation (MCS), the method is used to analyze the flutter reliability of suspension bridge. The results show that the empirical formula method in which the limit state function is explicitly represented as a function of variables is only a too conservative estimate for flutter reliability analysis but is not accurate adequately. So it is not suitable for reliability analysis of bridge flutter. The actual flutter reliability analysis should be conducted based on a finite element method in which limit state function is implicitly represented as a function of variables. The proposed M-DRM provide an alternate and efficient way to analyze a much more complicated flutter reliability of long span suspension bridge.

Limit analysis is based on the duality theorem which equates the least upper bound to the greatest lower bound. In this study, limit analysis of axisymmetric forming problem with workhardening materials is formulated by minimizing the upper bound functional and finite element program is developed for forward estrusion. Limit loads, velocity and flow line fields are directly obtained under various process conditions and deformation characteristics such as strains, strain rates and grid distortion are obtained from the optimum velocity components by numerical calculation. The experimental observation was carried out for extrusion and compared with computed results. The good agreement between theoretical and experimental results is shown that the developed programming is very effective for the analysis of axisymmetric extrusion.

This paper is intended to provide the background information and justification for Korean highway bridge design code(limit state design)(2012). Limit state design method calculates reliability index and probability of failure through the analysis of the reliability of the experimental database. It has become possible to perform the economical and consistent design by evaluating the safety of a structure quantitatively. In this paper, we used the design specifications of RC slab bridge of superstructure form of Road Design Manual in Part 5 bridge built in highway bridge. This study conducted structural analysis using the method of frame structure theory, design and analysis of bridge by limit state design method, the design code including various standards and Load model applied Korean highway bridge design code limit state design(KHBDC;2012). As a result, it analyzed the effect of safety through comparison. Showing effect of improvement the safety factor and comparing the value of the result, it is determined to be capable of economical design and safety. Furthermore, limit state design method was able to determine many redundant force of cross-section compared with existing design method. It is determined that it can reduce the overall amount because of the reduction of the cross-section and girder depth.
The forming limit diagram (FLD) is the most commonly used tool for evaluating of sheet metal formability in the manufacturing field as well as the finite element analysis (FEA)-based design process. Determination of the forming limits is considerably influenced by testing/measuring machines, techniques and conditions. These influences may cause a large scatter in FLD from laboratory to laboratory. Scatter is especially true when the ‘position-dependent method’, as is specified in most national and international standards, is used. In the current study a new ‘time-dependent method’ is proposed, which is to determine the forming limit strains more accurately and reasonably when producing a FLD from experimental data. This method is based on continual strain measurement during the test. The results are compared to those from the existing standardized methods.
The paper presents a numerical method for the limit analysis of structures made of a rigid no-tension material. Firstly, we formulate the constrained minimum problem resulting from the application of the kinematic theorem, which characterizes the collapse multiplier as the minimum of all kinematically admissible multipliers. Subsequently, by using the finite element method, we derive the corresponding discrete minimum problem in which the objective function is linear and the inequality constraints are linear as well as quadratic. The method is then applied to some examples for which the collapse multiplier and a collapse mechanism are explicitly known. Lastly, the solution to the minimum problem calculated via numerical codes for quadratic programming problems, is compared to the exact solution.
Conventional methods of reinforced slope analysis based on the concept of limit equilibrium have been widely adopted mainly due to their simplicity and short computation time. But depending upon the assumptions on the inter-slice forces, the factor of safety resulting from the limit equilibrium method is not uniquely determined. This paper describes a method to calculate the factor of safely of a slope using a numerical analysis. Recently some useful analysis techniques (Strength reduction method and the stability method using stress fields) by numerical analysis are proposed and their theory and characteristics applications are studied and investigated with simple examples in this paper.
The soil nailing was generally using method in practical business, in application of the soil nailing, the analysis was primarily used to Beam-Colum Method, Finite Element Method and Limit Equilibrium Method. Beam-Colum Method and Finite Element Method were able to examine transformation but widely using Limit Equilibrium Method wasn't able to examine transformation and displacement Therefore, this study was focused on presenting stability in comparison with former study-results about horizontal displacement of the soil nailing retaining-walls satisfing a criterion safety factor of Limit Equilibrium. There were performing comparison field measurements and former study-results in first step.

Forming limit diagram is created by graphical illustration indicating major and minor strain. In order to provide the criterion for forming safety, FLC(forming limit curve) need to be fitted to the diagram. However, the standard method for the strain measurement and FLC plotting are not fixed yet, which results in inconvenience in digitalized analysis. In this study, new construction method for FLC was suggested in order to minimize operator dependency. For this purpose, major and minor strain were measured automatically and analyzed. Then, a second order equation is adopted to fit the FLC. Optimized by response surface method was performed to ensure particular characteristics of the FLC.

The limit equilibrium method and finite element method have been commonly used to assess the stability of anchored slope. However, the existing limit equilibrium methods do not consider the load transfer of anchor and, if the potential failure surface crosses the bonded zone of anchors, the anchor loads are not included in computing the factor of safety. In this paper, simplified bishop method, one among several methods based on the limit equilibrium is used to develope the Excel Sheet program and the working load of anchor along the failure surface is calculated by Flamant's formula, proposed by Morlier and Tenier(1982). Additionally, the finite element analysis of anchored slope considering the load transfer is performed in order to compare with the result from the limit equilibrium analysis and analyze the reinforced effect of anchor. From this study, new modelling method that limits the reinforcing range and considers the load transfer is proposed and Excel Sheet program is developed. The factor of safety for several cases between PC STABL and Excel Sheet program is also compared for verification of the program.
