To select the most suitable variety of forage rape for growth in the southern part of Korea, Seven introduced varieties were grown from Mar, 1999 to August 2000. Velox was shown to have the highest dry matter yield in comparison to other varieties used in this experiment. It showed relatively high content of crude protein and in virto dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) and low content of NDF, ADF, cellulose and lignin. Therefore, it was concluded that Velox was the most suitable variety with high yield and high nutrient quality for spring in the southern part of Korea. The heritabilities of all the observed characters were estimated to be high.
Lignin, a prominent constituent of woody biomass, is abundant in nature, cost-effective, and contains various functional groups, including hydroxyl groups. Owing to these characteristics, they have the potential to replace petroleum-based polyols in the polyurethane industry, offering a solution to environmental problems linked to resource depletion and CO2 emissions. However, the structural complexity and low reactivity of lignin present challenges for its direct application in polyurethane materials. In this study, Kraft lignin (KL), a representative technical lignin, was fractionated with ethanol, an eco-friendly solvent, and mixed with conventional polyols in varying proportions to produce polyurethane films. The results of ethanol fractionation showed that the polydispersity of ethanol-soluble lignin (ESL) decreased from 3.71 to 2.72 and the hydroxyl content of ESL increased from 4.20 mmol/g to 5.49 mmol/g. Consequently, the polyurethane prepared by adding ESL was superior to the KL-based film, exhibiting improved miscibility with petrochemical-based polyols and reactivity with isocyanate groups. Consequently, the films using ESL as the polyol exhibited reduced shrinkage and a more uniform structure. Optical microscope and scanning electron microscope observations confirmed that lignin aggregation was lower in polyurethane with ESL than in that with KL. When the hydrophobicity of the samples was measured using the water contact angle, the addition of ESL resulted in higher hydrophobicity. In addition, as the amount of ESL added increased, an increase of 7.4% in the residual char was observed, and a 4.04% increase in Tmax the thermal stability of the produced polyurethane was effectively improved.
The Yeongheungdo shipwreck was excavated in the sea of Seomeopbeol, Ongjin-gun, Incheon, Korea. Chemical characterization of timbers from the shipwreck occurred via maximum moisture content, chemical composition, FT-IR, solid state $^{13}C$ NMR, and XRD analyses. As maximum moisture content of the outer part of the timbers averaged 623%, a phenomenon in that lignin increased relatively, according to the decrease in cellulose, and the ash content increased, which is typical of waterlogged archaeological wood was shown. The results from the FT-IR and solid state $^{13}C$ NMR analyses showed that the cellulose band of the outer part had disappeared or had remarkably decreased. In addition, the bands assigned to lignin dramatically increased. However, regarding the inner part of the timbers, hemicellulose and some crystalline cellulose and amorphous cellulose bands decreased. Therefore, a large difference exists between the degradation levels of the outer and inner parts of the timbers of the Yeongheungdo shipwreck.
In a series of studies on the chemical compositions and properties of organic matter from peats, volcanic ash soils and paddy rice soils, a comparative study on the composition and the fractional distribution of nitrogenous organic matters were undertaken for the elucidation on their characteristics. The results obtained are summerized as follows. 1. Gimpo and Peongtaeg peats showed higher content of organic matter, more than 60%, than Gimje and Yeongdong peats, and there is a great difference between the two groups in total-N, CEC and ash content. 2. The content of Lignin, Hollocellulose and Hemicellulose in organic matter was 12-25%, 15-31% and 7-14% respectively, and Gimpo peats were lots of Lignin content compared to others. 3. Sixty seven to eighty eight percent of the total-N in the soil was hydrolysable by 6 N-HCl and they were decreased in the order of volcanic ash soils (86.4%), mineral paddy soils (77.2%) and peats (72.3%). 4. The fractionations of acid hydrolysable organic-N were ${\alpha}$-amino acid-N(25-45%), unidentified-N (12-50%), amino sugar-N (1-7%) and ammonium-N (12-25%). 5. Almost same pattern in the amino acid composition of the acid hydrolysates of peat and soil organic matter was showed in the thin-layer chromatogram.
This work was conducted to evaluate the effects of rooting on tissue cultured M.9 (Malus domestica Bork. cv, tcM.9) after layering in field. We investigated an appearance period of first root in shoot, rooting ratio, contents of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), abscisic acid (ABA), inorganic matters, sugars, and lignin in rooting areas of stems by layering. First root in shoot of tcM.9 and natural M.9 appeared 25 and 30 days after layering (DAL), respectively. Rooting ratio was much higher in tcM.9 than in natural M.9. The content of IAA was higher in tcM.9 than in natural M.9 before layering, but it was reversed at 20 and 30 DAL. In contrast, the content of ABA was much higher in natural M.9 than in tcM.9 in case of both before and 10 and 20 DAL. The contents of N, B, Mn, and Zn were significantly higher in tcM.9 than in natural M.9 both before and 10 and 20 DAL. The contents of sugars in tcM.9 had the similar pattern of the contents of inorganic materials. There were statistically significant differences in the contents of sucrose and glucose at 30 DAL as well as the content of maltose at 20 and 30 DAL. The content of lignin was significantly higher in tcM.9 than in natural M.9 before layering and 10 and 30 DAL while there was no difference 20 DAL. Therefore, improvement of rooting ability in the tissue cultured root stock M.9 might be due to the changes of inorganic matters or lignin rather than that of sugars and hormones.
In order to examine the possibility that oil seed rape could be used as a forage fodder crop and to select the most suitable variety of forage rape at the southern area of Korea, two varieties of oil seed rape currently grown for oil production and six introduced varieties of forage rape with relatively high yield and high nutritional value were grown at the same condition and their nutritional value were observed. Generally, rape was considered as a useful forage fodder crop with high content of crude protein and low contents of NDF, ADF, hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin. Differences in mean values of the above characters between two groups of rape were not statistically significant. Velox showed significantly higher content of crude protein and significantly lower contents of NDF, ADF, hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin compared with other varieties of forage rape. Rape was relatively high in IVDMD compared with other forage fodder crops, and forage rape was more or less higher in IVDMD and DDMM than oil seed rape. Velox was the highest in IVDMD and DDMM among the varieties of forage rape in this experiment.

The bast fiber of Paper mulberry has been generally used as a fibrous raw material in traditional Hanji-making. Nowadays, its uses is expanded to different special purposes such as paper mulberry yarn, laminated paper, antimicrobial paper depending on its application. Despite the wide array of the use of mulberry fibers, it is still limited due to some difficulties in the automation process of manufacturing works. This study is focused on the analysis of chemical components and morphological properties of paper mulberry bark for the automation of bark peeling process. The bast tissue of paper mulberry was separated in three plies; black outer layer, green inner layer, and white inner layer. The total lignin content, holocelluloses, extractives and ashes, and the anatomical structure of the three layers in mulberry bark tissue were investigated. The analysis showed that the black outer layer is composed of about 50% of total lignin content, whereas the white inner layer is composed of about 90% of holocellulose content.

The effects of cultivar and DAPs on the lignin content and dyeability of the kenaf fibers were investigated. Four kenaf fiber samples were prepared from two cultivars, Tainung 2 and Everglades 41, and their 60 and 120 DAPs(days after planting) for the experiments. The lignin contents of the kenaf fibers of Tainung 2(T2) and Everglades 41(E41) were $11.29{\sim}12.78%$. Both T2 and E41 kenaf fibers had comparable amount of lignin, and klason lignin of the fibers was $2.5{\sim}3$ times as much as much as acid-soluble lignin. In both T2 and E41, 120 DAPs kenaf have 1% more lignin than 60 DAPs kenaf. The moisture regains of the four kenaf fiber samples were almost the same as $10.25{\pm}0.05%$. The absorbances of residual solution after dyeing for $1{\sim}180$ minutes with Red 81 at maximum wavelength 520 nm and Green 26 at 600 nm were measured. Comparing to Green 26, the dyeing rate of Red 81 was rapid and equilibrium state was reached in 12 minutes. The CIE $L^*,\;a^*, \;b^*,\;{\Delta}E$ and K/S values of the kenaf fibers dyed with Red 81 and Green 26 were measured as well. The dye exhaustion ratio of 60 DAPs kenaf was higher than that of 120 DAP.

This study aimed to increase the sugar and ethanol yield from the mengkuang plant biomass through biological and liquid hot water (LHW) pretreatment and their combination. The results showed that biological pretreatments with 5% inoculum of the fungus Trametes versicolor resulted in the highest alpha cellulose content incubated for 30 days, and 10% inoculum resulted in the lowest lignin content. LHW pretreatment decreased the hemicellulose content of pulps from 10.17% to 9.99%. T. versicolor altered the structure of the mengkuang pulp by degrading the lignin and lignocellulose matrix. The resulting delignification and cellulose degradation facilitate the hydrolysis of cellulose into sugars. The alpha cellulose content after biological-LHW pretreatment was higher (78.99%) compared to LHW-biological pretreatment (76.85%). Scanning electron microscopy analysis showed that biological-LHW combinated treatment degrades the cell wall structures. The ethanol yield for biological-LHW pretreated sample was observed 43.86% (13.11 g/L ethanol by weight of the substrate, which is much higher than that of LHW-biological pretreatment (34.02%; 9.097 g/L). The highest reducing sugar content about 45.10% was observed with a resulting ethanol content of 15.5 g/L at LHW pretreatment temperature of $180^{\circ}C$ for 30 min.

In this study, the physical properties of the medium and changes in the wood chemical composition of the sawdust were investigated during the cultivation of oak mushroom sawdust bags, and the following results were obtained. After inoculation, the weight of the medium decreased during the incubation period. It is determined that this is not due to evaporation of moisture containing the medium or decomposition of sawdust, but to decomposition of rice bran, a low molecular substance added to the medium. It was confirmed that the moisture content of the medium was steadily increased during incubation, and it was estimated that the organic substrates such as rice brane in the medium was decomposed by mycelium, and water, one of the decomposition products of organic substrates, caused an increase in the moisture content of the medium. Along with the increase in the harvest of oak mushrooms, the proportion of organic substances such as holocellulose and lignin, the main components of the wood cell wall of sawdust, steadily decreased. In particular, the degradation characteristics of the wood cell wall component of shiitake, which is a white rot fungi, were confirmed by higher lignin reduction rate than that of holocellulose. On the other hand, ash, which is an inorganic material, increased with an increase in the number of mushroom harvests. The increase in the amount of ash in the medium may have been due to the decrease in the organic matter content such as holocellulose and lignin.
