Abies koreana Wilson is a proper tree to Korea. We tested the antimicrobial activity of the lignans isolated from it. The lignans inhibited the growth of Klebsiella pneumoniae and Vibrio parahaemolyticus at the concentration of $10^3\;ppm\;and\;10^4\;ppm$. Especially, the compound V showed higher inhibition activity to Vibrio parahaemolyticus by 1.7 times compared with the control. The compound III showed activity of 36% of the control to Klebsiella pneumoniae. The compounds II and VI had the high growth inhibition activity of 48, 66% respectively to Vibrio parahaemolyticus.

Schisandra chinensis is a fruit which is called Omija in South Korea. The Korean word Omija means "five flavors" (sweet, spicy, sour, bitter, and salty). The aim of his study was to investigate the correlation between growth characteristics and lignans (gomisin A, gomisin N, schisandrin) contents of Schisandra chinensis. The method for determining lignans was validated by measuring the linearity, limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantification (LOQ), precision and accuracy using UPLC-UV. Growth characteristics of S. chinensis such as number of fruits per fruit bunch, length of fruit bunch, width of fruit bunch, fresh weight of fruit bunch, length of fruit, width of fruit, fresh weight of fruit, fresh weight of 30 fruits, and sugar contents of fruit were measured. From the results of correlation analysis, it was found that the contents of lignans showed a significantly negative correlation with fresh weight and sugar contents of fruit. These results will be used to study for quality control of S. chinensis fruit.
Antimicrobial activities of the organosoluble extracts, seperated fractions and isolated lignans from the leaves tissue of Magnolia kobus DC. var. borealis Sarg. were investigated. The results are summarized as follows : 1. The inhibitory components against the spore growing test were concentrated on light petroleum ether and diethyl ether soluble fractions. The light petroleum ether solubles of the leaves tissue had terpenes compound, so, that they caused growing inhibition. These appearance showed high values of Rf on TLC bioautography and GC analyses with monoterpenes. 2. In the lignans, syringaresinol(X III), medioresinol(VI), phillygenin(VIII), kobusinol A(X) showed relatively high inhibitory effects in the spore growing test, and these are all showed structural characteristic of the phenolic hydroxyl group of guaiacyl and syringyl skelecton. 3. The light petroleum ether soluble fraction showed the strongest inhibitory effect against the antimicrobial activity in the seperated fractions. 4. The inhibitory effects of the lignans against the bacteria showed not so pronounced independantly, but the extracts and separated fractions contained with these lignans showed something synergism.

Five lignans including gomisin N (1), wuweizisu C (2), gomisin L1 (3), (+)-deoxyschizandrin (4), and gomisin J (5) have been isolated from the fruits of Schizandra chinensis. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated by analyzing MS and NMR spectra. Effects of the compounds isolated in this study on the dopamine content in PC12 cells were investigated to evaluate their inhibitory effectiveness. The gomisin N, wuweizisu C, and gomisin J showed 25.4%, 39.8%, and 35.1 %, respectively, inhibition effect on dopamine content in PC12 cells at the concentration of $50\;{\mu}g/ml$.
Three TNF-$\alpha$inhibitory lignans were isolated from the flower buds of Magnolia fargesii through bioassay-guided isolation. They were identified as eudesmin, magnolin and lirioresinol-B dimethylether on the basis of their spectroscopic data. All three lignans showed inhibitory effects on TNF-$\alpha$ production in LPS-stimulated murine macrophage cell line, RAW264.7 and eudesmin showed the strongest activity ($IC_{50}=51{\mu}M)$.
The effects of lignans, related to macelignan, on hepatic microsomal drug-metabolizing enzyme (DME) activity were evaluated to elucidate the structure-activity relationship in mice and rats. The compounds carrying the methylenedioxyphenyl nucleus were found to be the msot potent among compounds tested; which not only produced a marked inhibition of DME with a single dose but a significant induction with repeated treatments. Lack of the methylenedioxy group caused marked decrease in the activity, implying that a methylenedioxy group is essential and of major importance eliciting DME modifying activity.
The CH$_2$Cl$_2$ fraction of the bark of Machilus thunbergii Sieb. et Zucc. (Lauraceae) significantly protected primary cultures of rat cortical cells exposed to the excitotoxic amino acid, L-glutamate. Several lignans including (-)-isoguaiacin, meso- dihydroguaiaretic acid, machilin A, (+)-galbelgin, licarin A, (-)-sesamin, and (+)-guaiacin were isolated from the CH$_2$Cl$_2$ fraction using by bioactivity-guided isolation techniques. Among these lignans, (-)-isoguaiacin, meso-dihydroguaiaretic acid, licarin A and (+)-guaiacin had significant neuroprotective activities against glutamate-induced toxicity in primary cultures of rat cortical cells at concentration ranging from 0.1 ${\mu}$M to 10.0 ${\mu}$M. (omitted)
Eight lignans (1-8) and two macrolides (9-10) were isolated from the CHCl3-soluble fraction of Houttuynia cordata Thumb (Saururaceae). Structures of isolates were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic methods. Fatty acid-derived macrolides (9-10) have rarely been reported from nature. All the isolates were tested for their inhibitory activities against NO production in RAW 264.7 cells stimulated by LPS. It was found that compounds 3 and 9 remarkably down-regulated LPS-induced NO production with IC50 values, 5.4 and 40.3 μM, respectively, without cytotoxicity.

This study was carried to investigate the effect of soil texture on the growth and the contents of quercetin-glycoside and lignans, and to improve the qualities of Saururus chinensis Baill. Soil texture resulted no significant effects on the number of nodes, the number of leaves, the number of branches and dry matter ratio. However, the shoot dry weight was higher in sandy loam, loam, silt loam and sand soil in that order. Although the weight of rhizomes of below 5 mm in diameter was not significantly different among soil textures, the weight of rhizomes between 5.1 and 10.9 mm and the weight of rhizomes of above 11 mm in diameter ranged $437{\sim}465\;g$ and was larger in clay loam than in other soil textures. No significance difference was showed in rhizome dry ratio ranging from 19.1 to 20.8%. The amount of quercetin-glycoside in leaves was higher in loam and sandy loam and ranged from 219.3 to 222.4 mg/100 g of quercetin-glycoside quercitrin, rutin, isoquercitrin and hyperin were higher in that order. On the other hand, quercetin-glycoside contents in stem were 14.8 mg/100 g and 12.4 mg/100 g in sandy and sandy loam, respectively, and were higher than in other soil textures of quercetin-glycoside constituents, the content of rutin was the highest. The content of lignans was increased in clay loam, loam, sandy loam, and sandy in that order of lignans, the manassatin B was the highest.

Schisandra chinensis is a traditional herbal medicine that is widely spread in Korea, Japan, and China. The fruits of S. chinensis Bailon, known as omija in Korea, have traditionally been used for the treatment of coughs, fatigues, and insomnia. Up to now, there have been several reports for the identification of major lignan compounds and their quantitation in S. chinensis extracts. To the best of our knowledge, however, there is no report on the analysis of lignans in omija wine and omija cheong (sugared omija or omija sugar syrup). In the present study, seven dibenzocyclooctadiene lignans (gomisin A, gomisin B, gomisin C, gomisin N, schisandrin, deoxyschisandrin, and wuweizisu C) in omija wine and omija cheong were analyzed and quantitated using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Among seven lignans, pharmacologically active gomisin A, schisandrin, and deoxyschisandrin, which are major components in fruits of S. chinensis, were the most abundant lignans in omija wine and cheong. The content of lignan in omija wine was in the order: schisandrin > gomisin A > deoxyschisandrin > gomisin N > gomisin B > gomisin C > wuweizisu C. The concentration of deoxyschisandrin and gomisin N in omija wine was approximately 2.0- and 6.0-fold higher than for omija cheong. Additionally, this study provided a systematic identification of lignans in omija wine and cheong and indicated that the omija wine and cheong might be of value for their dietary application.
