  • Precision electronic equipments for outdoor use are composed of sophisticated microcircuits that are extremely vulnerable to lightning-caused voltage spike. This transient voltage spike may cause upset, latent failure or Interference on electronic equipments. In order to develop efficient lightning protection measures on AC power lines of a road traffic controller as a electronic equipment for outdoor use, experimental surge immunity tests were conducted according to IEC standard 801-5. The combination of gas tube arrester and metal-oxide varistor was installed at the input of AC power lines and the silicon avalanche suppressor installed at the output of DC power supply for the lightning protection measures.

  • In today's competitive power market, electric power utilities have strived to provide energy at an acceptable level of quality due to increased expectations from customers. For this reason, electric power utilities have invested in electric equipment and new techniques. That is the Distribution Automation System (DAS). A merit of DAS is the ability to reduce outage time because of fast service restoration. However, DAS is usually installed in outdoor environments. Therefore, their efficiency is affected by the external conditions. Lightning creates varying degrees of physical stress on DAS. This paper focuses on the reliability of DAS for lightning. Four application studies were performed to compare the reliability indices.

  • This paper describes the characteristic evaluation of 154kV lightning arrester developed by domestic technology. To prove the protective ability of lightning arrester developed, various overvoltages were analyzed for A and B arrester were being used now at 154kV air and gas insulation substation, and for arrester developed. The results obtained by the various simulations show that the developed arrester has the effective protective ability and reducing ability of the overvoltage as A and B arrester, nevertheless there are somewhat differences among three kinds of arresters. Accordingly, it is evaluated that the arrester developed by domestic technology secured reliability can be installed actually at 154kV substation. In this paper, EMTP/ATP was used for simulation.

  • This paper describes the effect of lightning current on combination transmission line. In the paper, an lightning current which can generate 2/80[${\mu}s$]. 20[kA] - 40[kA] waveform is modeled in ATPDraw. The lightning current invaded to the overhead power transmission line propagates to the underground power cable. The simulation was performed to analyze the effect of arrester location and overvoltage occurred in power cable.

  • This paper describes the analysis results for the protection of lightning surge at 154 kV substation. We found that the surge arrester is needed at the inlet structure. The maximum overvoltage is 975 kV at the circuit breaker without the surge arrester at the inlet structure. This value can be lower than 600 kV by installing the surge arrestor at the inlet structure. In addition to the incoming surge from transmission line, the shield wire should be considered to prevent the shielding failure by the direct lightning stroke.

  • The conventional SiC-type of lightning arresters in distribution systems has been replaced by ZnO-type because the ZnO-type has characteristics such as outstanding non linearity, high energy absorption capability, surge suppressing performance, and excellent response to abrupt wave. Out of the various types of lightning arrester failures, some which have been often reported could be prevented in advance. Therefore, the preventive countermeasures which can cope with the failures are strongly required. This paper summed up and analyzed the lightning arrester failures which occurred, from 1983 to 1992, in distribution systems in order to provide fundamental data, classified by year, to make countermeasures.

  • In order to obtain the detailed informations about the lightning electromagnetic fields, the electric and magnetic fields radiated by lightning return strokes were observed with the electric field sensor of hemi-sphere type and the magnetic field sensor of loop type and their physical characteristics were statistically analyzed. The multiple stroke occurrence numbers was 2.6. In multiple lightning strokes the amplitude of peak and the time interval between the subsequent strokes were decreased as the number of the subsequent strokes increases.

  • A strong need to improve the quality of electric power is increased because of increasing use of the sensitive and small-sized electronic devices. The surges on the low-voltage ac power lines are induced by nearby lightning return strokes, and the facilities for HA, OA, FA, ME as well as computer are easily damaged by high-voltage transients. The behaviors of lightning surge characteristics transferred from the primary winding to the secondary winding in distribution transformers using a Marx generator were experimentally investigated. The transfer characteristics of lightning surge associated with a custom service ground of secondary side were also examined.

  • This paper deals with n rise in electric potential of telecommunication line for electric power system by lightning surges. When $1.2/50{\mu}s$ and $8/20{\mu}s$ impulse voltage and current were applied on telecommunication cable, the voltage waveforms at the end terminal and equipment were measured. The telecommunication lines, which consist of 60 conductors and 3.5km in length, have some surge protectors such as preposition lightning arrester and TVSS. In each case, the rise in electric potential was measured for differential mode and common mode, respectively. Also, the rise in ground potential and the induced voltages were measured and analyzed. As a result, a significant rise in ground potential was observed for lightning surge. It can cause failure or malfunction of telecommunication systems.

  • In this paper, in order to obtain statistical informations on lightning electromagnetic waveforms, electric field waveforms produced by lightning return strokes were measured and analyzed. The electric field measuring system consists of hemisphere antenna 30[cm] in diameter, integrator and data acquisition. system. The frequency bandwidth of the measuring system is 200[Hz] to 1.56[MHz], and the sensitivity is 0.96[mV/V/m]. The mean value of front time of electric field waveforms produced by positive lightning return strokes is 5.87[${\mu}s$], and that of negative is 4.12[${\mu}s$]. The mean values of zero-crossing time for positive or negative electric field waveforms are 35.00 and 26.61[${\mu}s$], respectively. The mean value of percentage dip-depth for positive electric field waveforms is 33.68[%], and that for negative is 28.36[%].
